Possible coaching candidates to replace Brian Kelly at Cincinnati
By Bill Koch • bkoch@enquirer.com • December 10, 2009

Who will replace Brian Kelly at UC? Here are four names the school might want to consider.

Skip Holtz: The East Carolina coach since 2005, Holtz just won his second-straight Conference USA championship.

After being linked last year with the Syracuse head coaching job, Holtz was quoted as saying "it would have to be a really special situation to get me out of here."

East Carolina plays Arkansas in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl on Jan. 2.

Chris Petersen: After four seasons at Boise State, Petersen is now regarded as one of the best offensive coaches in the country.

Fans will remember his team beating Oklahoma 43-42 in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

Could playing in the Big East, with its BCS bowl tie-in, be attractive for Petersen? Maybe, then again, he's about to play in his second Fiesta Bowl in four years: The Broncos play TCU on Jan. 4.

Butch Jones: Jones replaced Brian Kelly as the Chippewas' head coach in 2007. He led Central Michigan to an 11-2 mark this season and Top 25 ranking, and his team will face Troy in the GMAC Bowl on Jan. 6 in Mobile, Ala.

Jeff Quinn: The long-time assistant to Kelly is UC's offensive coordinator.

He's spent 21 seasons with Kelly and knows the ins and outs of the Bearcats' offense.

He's a finalist for the Broyles Award.

Potential candidates to replace Brian Kelly

To ignore the topic and the possibility of Brian Kelly leaving now is to bury your head in the sand.

And Mike Thomas certainly isn't doing that, so we won't.

What credentials should Thomas be looking for in the next UC football coach? How good is the UC job? How many coaches at current Top 25 programs would be interested?

Does UC look for an up an coming coach from a non-BCS conference?
How about a current NFL assistant?

What about a former college coach looking to get back into coaching?

Brian Kelly wasn't a "big name" when he came from Central Michigan.

Will UC fans demand a big name this time?

Does the next hire have to be offensive minded like Kelly?

Should UC promote from within to keep continuity? (Jeff Quinn/Kerry Combs?)

Here are a few names that came up as I talked to various people around college football and the NFL over the last 10 days. Click on name for full bio of each coach.

Cincy seeks Sumlin

Cincinnati, seeking a new head coach in the wake of Brian Kelly's departure for Notre Dame, has asked for permission to talk to Houston coach Kevin Sumlin, Rivals.com has learned.

Sumlin just finished his second year at Houston, leading the Cougars to the C-USA West title and league title game this season. Sumlin was named 2009 C-USA Coach of the Year and has an 18-8 record with two bowl appearances.

Other potential candidates at Cincinnati are Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, East Carolina coach Skip Holtz, Central Michigan coach Butch Jones and Temple coach Al Golden.

FWIW, there's an insider headline on ESPN.com mentioning Fulmer coming to UC
I wouldn't be opposed to Fulmer........but he's far from my first choice.
I was going to mention Tubberville, be he's on that second list. He got a raw deal at Auburn, and certainly would be able to grab some recruits from the South, which UC needs if they want to compete with the big boys year in and year out.
UC's Head Coach will need recruiting ties in the midwest. Does Tuberville have them? He will need to recruit successfully in OH (Coombs is intergral in this so it would be nice to have him on the next coach's staff).

Quinn will follow Kelly to ND……..he’s been with Kelly for 25 yrs now. Same with the DC Bob Diaco……..he’s going with Kelly.

I would also take Skip Holtz off my wishlist as his dream job is also ND. If Kelly fails at ND then we’ll be in the same situation again in 4 – 5 yrs. I’d rather not go through all this again with ND.

Kevin Sumline seems to be a legit candidate as does Butch Jones. My preference of those 2 would be Butch Jones as Sumline’s teams have been known to lose games they shouldn’t lose as they’re clearly more talented than the other team.

I know this is a pipedream but why not talk to Urban Meyer? He’s a UC grad who played at UC. Maybe home is where the heart is for him and he leaves Florida for UC. (shut up)

OK, realistically my list of serious contenders, if I was Mike Thomas, would be:

Chris Peterson (would be my #1 choice and I’d pull all the stops to get him)
Butch Jones
Kevin Sumline
Phil Fulmer
Tommy Tuberville
and Skip Holtz I guess.

I know it's your birthday and all, but dayum. Leaving Florida for UC would be... wow.

I'd love to hear the whining from gaytor nation if Meyer turned down ND for UC.

Hopefully he'd have more success than Groh had when the left the Jets for UVa. <_<

And I don't see why he would follow BK

It's what I've heard. I don't think people are that high on Quinn. Its true that he and Kelly gameplanned the offensive scheme together but Kelly called the plays and Kelly has been credited with pretty much devising the scheme. Quinn seems to be a "tagalong".

I've also heard that the QB coach will follow Kelly to ND.

I really want Chris Peterson from Boise St. He's an offensive minded coach who could implement a scheme similar to what we currently run which would continue the recruiting momentum we've built.

I think Mike Thomas will move quickly to hire the next guy as valuable recruiting time could potentially go by the wayside if he were to wait until after the bowl game.

Yes, the entire staff will remain in tact for the Sugar Bowl......beyond that is what I'm referring to.
my impression was that it didn't just mean for the Sugar Bowl. Typically if assistants leave, they leave right away as they have to get out there and start recruiting just as much as the HC. With the way the recruiting rules are setup, you can't just have your HC do all the recruiting. It limits how much he'd be able to do.

I don't see Petersen coming to Cincinnati. He's a West Coast guy.

Sumlin seems like the best fit. With his recruiting skills and Kerry Combs local recruiting skills....wow. Look again at his offenses....In 2009, offense ranks #1 in total offense, #1 in passing and #1 in scoring. In 2008, offense ranked #2 in total offense, #2 in passing yards and #10 in scoring. Coming from a school very similar in size, but in a worse conference, and currently making $750,000. His attorney has a new contract in hand from Houston, so UC will have to make up their mind on him fast. Skip Holtz's East Carolina team beat his team this year.

The other reason I can't see him coming is that his raison d'etre, like all people in Boise, is to complain about the BCS automatic bid system, and how their program is really big enough to deserve that kind of attention, etc. I suppose if he came here, it would be the old "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" thing, but I wouldn't expect him to see that as a move to a bigger program, even if UC doesn't have to install a hideous field for attention. They also have been able to get BCS bids lately.

That, and his predecessor (Dan Hawkins) has been a horrible failure at Colorado who is only currently employed because his contract is too large to eat.

diaco is gone, THANK GOD.

if quinn gets offered the HC job he will stay. if he doesnt get offered it he will leave. as much as the media goes on about BK, quinn developed the playbook that Kelly uses. Kelly calls the plays but they are Quinns plays. Quinn has plays handy incase BK doesnt get a play in quick enough but for the most part Kelly calls the game. I would love to have quinn though.

No matter who gets the job, I'd like to see Jeff Quinn, Kerry Combs, Mike Elston, Greg Forest, and Tim Hinton stay with the team.
Quinn, Elston and Forest have a long term relationship with Coach Kelly and it could be very difficult to keep them around. If Quinn gets the job, it still may be difficult to keep Elston and Forest from joining Kelly.

Posted by John Taylor on December 12, 2009 3:12 PM ET Houston, you no longer have a problem.
Kevin Sumlin, one of a handful of names mentioned as potential replacements for Brian Kelly at Cincinnati, has announced that he has declined an opportunity to interview for the Bearcats' vacancy and will remain the Cougars' head coach.
UC officials had requested permission to speak to Sumlin shortly after Kelly decided to bolt for the Notre Dame job.
"After speaking with representatives with the University of Cincinnati yesterday and today, I declined an interview," Sumlin said in a statement. "I am looking forward to our first bowl practice later this afternoon and later honoring our seniors at the football banquet tonight."
Earlier this week, both Sumlin and athletic director Mack Rhoades revealed that they were close to an agreement on a new contract, with the latter stating that they've "agreed to terms probably 99 percent."
Kerry Combs....home grown and all the skyline he can eat. :clapping:
The problem is, Kerry doesn't even have college coordinator experience. He was hired to help draft locally, and is a DB coach. Great guy, great high school coach, but doesn't have the college experience yet.

Remember ND selected a Cincinnati High School coach, extremely popular and extremely productive high school coach, and he failed.
