The Cincinnati Bengals, behind first year head coach Marvin Lewis, have posted a 4-5 record over the first 10 weeks of the season, double the number of wins from the entire 2002 2-14 season. And in come the Chiefs. Undefeated at 9-0 and in complete control of the AFC.

A brash young Bengals WR named Chad Johnson, sitting #2 on the depth chart behind first round pick Peter Warrick, guarantees a win at Paul Brown Stadium. NFL Films send their crew and denote Kansas City at Cincinnati to be the Game of the Week.

Warrick has the game of his life, with 114 recieving yards and 84 punt return yards, including 2 TDs in the 4th quarter. Starting RB Rudi Johnson, filling in for the injured Corey Dillon, rumbles for 164 yards against the top-ranked rush D in the league.

The Bengals knock off the only undefeated team left in the league and earn a share of 1st place with Baltimore (who lost at Miami). The Bengals would be in contention for a playoff spot until the final week of the season, a remarkable feat for a team that was 27-92 in their previous 101 games.

More than any other game, the Chiefs 2003 game put Cincinnati back on the NFL map. It gave the Bengals a swagger that they would take into 2004 when Jon Kitna turned the reigns over to Carson Palmer en route to a division title the following year. The Marvin Lewis era, effectively, began with that game. And now, the Chiefs come back to town with the Bengals on the verge of clinching the AFC North. What began against Kansas City 6 years ago can end against Kansas City 4 days from now.
Sad when they considered it a feet that we got back to .500.

Also sad that Peter Warrick's "career game" was 114 yards receiving and 84 yards pun returning. I remember the game, Warrick did have a good one, probably his best, but we've had guys eclipse those numbers (receiving anyway) many times.

198 all purpose yards is a lot.. i dunno that we have had a guy eclipse that.. if we did.. probably not too often.

We've never had a guy who has had the chance (besides TJ, kind of - receiver wise). Unless I am overlooking someone... ????

Corey did it a few times... I can't remember if Rudi has or not.
Rudi has hit 200 yards a couple of times against the browns.

I have a feeling B.Scott will eclipse that mark quite a few times in his career.

Amish - you're a numbers guy. What is KC's record since they started 9-0 that year and we beat them? I think the franchise literally tanked after that game.

I'm not Amish, but the Chiefs went 4-3 after their 9-0 start to end up 13-3, then lost their first playoff game to the Colts. They have since gone 7-9, 10-6, 9-7, 4-12, 2-14, and 3-11. Their only playoff appearance since that 2003 season was 2006, when they went 9-7 and lost their first playoff game, again to the Colts.

Didn't we finish 06 9-7 also but they beat us in Week 1? Well that was their payback haha

I have been to ALOT of sporting events, and that game still ranks in my top 5. It was an awesome experience.

Can't argue with that. 39-64 overall from The Promise forward. 0.379, equivalent to 6.5 years of 6-10 football. Over that same period, we've gone 50-53-1 overall, 0.486, or a 7-8-1 average. Both figures include our respective 0-fers in post-season play.

But contrast that to the 6+ seasons from 1997 until before The Promise:

KC: 13-3 7-9 9-7 7-9 6-10 8-8 9-0 = 59-46 .562 = 9-7 average
CIN: 7-9 3-13 4-12 4-12 6-10 2-14 4-5 = 30-75 .286 = 4-11-1 average

The Chiefs averaged TWICE as many wins as us before The Promise. We've averaged a game-and-a-half better than them since, and that only includes 2 above-.500 seasons for us. They've gone SIGNIFICANTLY in the tank since Chad opened his big gold-teefed mouth. ;)

Bernard Scott eclipsed it earlier this year against the Steelers. That was a whale of a game with 260 total yards. But 198 is a very good number as well.

We finished 8-8 that year (Pitt beat us Week 17 in OT to keep us out of the playoffs), but we beat the Chiefs in Week 1 at Arrowhead. Geathers gave Trent Green a nasty concussion that was the beginning of the end of his career.
