Hit an elk last night...

Just had to post this.

For the record, have never hit anything larger than a skunk until last night. Driving home, about 50mph as there were spots of ice on the highway when all of a sudden, there it was. Don't think I even had time to brake. Just BOOM. Took out both my headlights, destroyed my radiator, crumpled the hood, the plastic grill is gone. That's what I could see last night, who knows what it looks like under the hood. If Monty, my friend/coworker (who was kind enough to grab a trailer from work and tow it back to the yard) is correct, the plastic grill and the letters J EP are now embedded in the elk. He liked that idea, me not so much.

Scariest minute for me where it was all reaction. I stayed straight but couldn't accelerate or brake, had to turn off the ignition switch to finally come to a stop on the side of the road.

I think my Jeep's done for, find out tomorrow, got snow tires on my Saturn now. The county Sheriffs here are great though, had two stop to make sure everything was OK, and the second one gave me a lift home so Monty didn't have to drive all the way to my house before heading back to town (I live about 40 miles from work). There was another elk hit just minutes after me a couple miles back, by another "chick" as I was informed by the sheriff, ha ha!!

Couple good things though, the bumper is fine (love that reinforced heavy-duty thing, may have saved me serious injury), I don't have a scratch on me, and my water still works!!!

GO BENGALS!!! Not happy about the Sunday night game, don't get NBC, yet I pay for NFL ticket. That sucks....

Wow.

At least it didn't fly through the windshield...

I'm very thankful for that, read some horror stories last night. I thank God I was driving my Jeep, hope to get it back.

A deer can seriously fuck a car up. I can only imagine what a fucking elk would do. I used to work in a gas station on this strip of nothing highway out in Kentucky. I've actually seen deer come across the road and get hit. It's really fucked up when you see both of them coming, the deer and the car, and know there ain't shit you can do to stop it.

This is probably the most popular image of a deer strike by a Durango: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://blogidaho.biz/durango4.jpg&imgrefurl=http://blogidaho.blogspot.com/2007/10/man-gored-to-death-by-deer.html&usg=__kkkat36wJBc6FrvFSVVpqh1-CpQ=&h=240&w=320&sz=17&hl=en&start=11&um=1&tbnid=CF7XBgt4SZ6cvM:&tbnh=89&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3Ddodge%2Bdurango%2Bdeer%2Bwindshield%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1

And you are lucky! Elk are much heavier than deer!

My mom hit a deer in her Pinto when I was 3 or 4 years old and for the next several years I had a phobia of deer. I used to have nightmares where a deer would stick its head through my open window in my nursery and start talking to me.

Here's some pics of the Jeep. Insurance considered it a total loss, let me buy it back, and cut me a check for $1500. Luckily, Monty thinks we can get it back on the road for around $500, so I'll be hitting up the junk yards quite often over the next few months, and he's gonna help me get it going again.

As you can see, the damage was mainly just to the grill, lights and radiator. Still haven't looked under the hood, so I'm not sure how extensive the damage actually is. Hope to get it back since now I'm driving my Saturn (got snow tires on it yesterday) and they're calling for 5-8 inches of snow tomorrow, with more to come everyday after that.

I can tell you one thing, I took it slow coming home from work today, and kept my eyes out for anything moving.

Your front end got pretty messed up (maybe I missed you saying something about engine damage?) but your Jeep is likely totalled because its older and not worth a whole lot to begin with.
That's the main reason they totalled it, age ('94) and mileage (190,000). They did give me points because the body was clean, no other dings or dents aside from the front end. Hoping the frames not bent. Considering I paid $2000 for it 8 years ago, I'd say I got my money's worth, just glad I had the comprehensive coverage. Really hope to get it going again, won't know a lot until we get it to his shop on Friday. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Up here in Wisconsin, people hit deer so much, that the police tag the dead deer
with an orange X so no one else can claim them on their insurance. I bet I have
seen 20 of them along side the road in the past week. It took some getting use
to when I first moved here. I couldn't image hitting an elk though.

Glad to see everything is OK. Looks like you might actually come out pretty good if
you can get your Jeep fixed.

Anyway, I am pretty sure that NBC streams the game over the inter-net in HD quality.
So you will still be able to see the game, albeit from your computer.

Thanks Old, had been planning on finding a live stream to watch, like I did before I got DirecTV.

Got the Jeep over to his shop, after closer inspection, it looks like the frame is bent. Driver side fender is bowed out, you can see where the bumper bracket is pushed back and in. In other words, it's looking like I'll be parting out the poor thing, but we'll know more once we can get the hood open. At the least, it'll cost me a few hundred to get it going, or I'll end up with more money in my pocket than I originally paid for it.

I'd prefer to get it running. We had 10 inches of snow between 6am and noon yesterday, then rain. Talk about a nasty, slushy drive.

As of right now, I don't have to drive anywhere until Monday, so I'm looking forward to watching the game on Sunday, albeit on my computer, and win or lose, it'll be nice to just watch the game.

Happy New Year to everyone, watch out for wildlife on the road, and here's to the playoffs. Go Bengals!!

I hit a deer about four weeks ago on I-275 between Hamilton Ave. and Winton Road. I thought I braked enough to miss him...and then he slowed down (didn't get completely out of the way). Just clipped him...but it still did over $1200 in damages to my '95 Accord. No sign of the deer.

...and glad you're okay, Cali.

Edit for a story from another (after you hit a deer, you'll hear tons of stories...this is my favorite):

A friend, Vic, was riding his motorcycle and a deer came running out of the woods. Vic stopped...so did the deer, at the edge of the road about 10 feet away from Vic. Vic waited for the deer to go on and cross the road, but the deer wouldn't move. So Vic started on down the road...and the deer proceeded to run right into him. Vic was skinned up a bit (as was his bike), but no broken bones. Vic is convinced that deer are the dumbest animals on the planet.

That happened to my wife not too long ago. She saw them driving my car as they lazily crossed a country road, stopped, waited for them to cross, and once they did, she started to go, only to have one of the dumb deers suddenly decide to run back across the road the other way and bonk its skull against my side mirror and the side of the car. $500 deductible, $1100 damage, thank you Mr Deer.

I live in a subdivision of Lawrenceburg called Hidden Valley. Mostly middle class homes, some millionaire places on the lake, its pretty nice, etc. We actually have our own herd of deer up here, its illegal to hunt them, and they roam as they see fit. Funny thing...they have been indoctrinated to humans so much that they wait for cars before they cross, you can get super close to them before they bolt, they aren't afraid of us, etc. Its a little weird. But its true. The most docile, human-aware deer you'd ever want to meet. And there is a LOT of them. Its uncanny. At any moment I could look out off my back deck and see no deer, or twenty of them all grazing in my yard.
