Then why do the top 10% of wage earners pay 65% of the income tax in this country?

I think as a country we benefit more from the upper class than people want to realize.....

Is that before or after they send their money to the caymans?

Wow...just wow. Then make more money.....Don't hate those that do...

If it wasn't for those rich people we would all suffer.

Blaming all rich people because Bernie Madoff and a few of his ilk were rotten is plain and simply...silly.

Yeah it's silly of those of us who have been paying attention to why we are where we are from an economic standpoint to say such things. I mean you know these things like mortgage backed securities and credit default swaps are all SO good for us, I mean without the gambling that has been going on on wall street, we all would be in such peril.

Naaaaw, it's definitely the poor and lazy who brought this economy to it's knees.

You know why rich people pay more taxes?

Because they are in the minority......

You would think that since they are a minority in this country that the Democrats would baby them and want to tell them what they want hear even if it flies in the face of truth just to make them feel better...
Buffett blasts system that lets him pay less tax than secretary

Warren Buffett, the third-richest man in the world, has criticised the US tax system for allowing him to pay a lower rate than his secretary and his cleaner.

Speaking at a $4,600-a-seat fundraiser in New York for Senator Hillary Clinton, Mr Buffett, who is worth an estimated $52 billion (£26 billion), said: “The 400 of us [here] pay a lower part of our income in taxes than our receptionists do, or our cleaning ladies, for that matter. If you’re in the luckiest 1 per cent of humanity, you owe it to the rest of humanity to think about the other 99 per cent.”

Mr Buffett said that he was taxed at 17.7 per cent on the $46 million he made last year, without trying to avoid paying higher taxes, while his secretary, who earned $60,000, was taxed at 30 per cent. Mr Buffett told his audience, which included John Mack, the chairman of Morgan Stanley, and Alan Patricof, the founder of the US branch of Apax Partners, that US government policy had accentuated a disparity of wealth that hurt the economy by stifling opportunity and motivation.

The comments are among the most signficant yet in a debate raging on both sides of the Atlantic about growing income inequality and how the super-wealthy are taxed.

They echo those made this month by Nicholas Ferguson, one of the leading figures in Britain’s private equity industry, when he criticised tax rates that left its multimillionaire venture capitalists “paying less tax than a cleaning lady”.

Last week senior members of the US Senate proposed to increase the rate of tax that private equity and hedge fund staff pay on their share of the profits, known as carried interest, from the 15 per cent capital gains rate to about 35 per cent.

Lloyd Blankfein, the chief executive of Goldman Sachs, acknowledged in an interview yesterday that there were justified concerns about the huge profits generated by private equity firms and that he worried that income inequality was “poisoning democracy”. He also said that he would be voting for the Democrat candidate at the next election. Mr Blankfein is the highest-paid executive on Wall Street, earning $54 million last year.

Mr Buffett, who runs the investment group Berkshire Hathaway and is widely regarded as the world’s most successful investor, said that he was a Democrat because Republicans are more likely to think: “I’m making $80 million a year – God must have intended me to have a lower tax rate.”

Mr Buffett said that a Republican proposal to eliminate elements of inheritance tax, which raises about $30 billion a year from the assets of about 12,000 rich families, would broaden the disparity between rich and poor. He added that the Republicans would seek to recover lost revenue by increasing taxes for the less prosperous.

He said: “You could take that $30 billion and give $1,000 to 30 million poor families. Or should you favour the 12,000 estates and make 30 million families pay an extra $1,000?”
My guess is that I make more money than you do. Per US Statistics, I am in that 10% that pays 65% of the taxes. I don't blame Rich people, I try to emulate them, so I use the tax code to my advantage. Look at it this way, for the first 104k you make a year(approx) you pay about 21 percent federal taxes on average. You also pay 7.65 % SS Taxes and about 2% for medicare. After 104, however the 7.65 drops off as well as the medicare. Plus, I get a nice deduction for my home that sits on 4.65 acres with an inground swimming pool, hot tub and theatre room. I also own a part time business that lets me put a lot more in my retirement funds that are tax deferred, and allows me to deduct expenses that mean I can tax leverage up to about 25 to 30 k a year. So my percentage of total tax compared to my total income is a lot less than the poor guy whose only making 50k. If they tell me I have to pay 3-4 percent more, which is only on the money that exceeds a certain amount, I can probably handle that. Especially, if it means more people have a little money so they don't try to steal my shit!

We are getting way off my point....

Blaming all the "rich" for the sins of a few is silly. Period.....

Bringing up Bernie Madoff with the intentions of making all "rich" look like criminals is criminal in it and of itself.
Period.

Should I judge all Democrats by Nancy Pelosi or Hank Johnson?...

That was my original point.

10% of the tax base > Bernie Madoff...by a large margin.

My turn to say "Wow".

Sorry, but I have a problem with companies like Exxon Mobile and GE that made $45 and $10 billion respectively last year and didn't pay a fucking cent in income taxes to the US.

That's $55 billion just for those 2 companies tax free.

Oh, and per the update on the site, Exxon would be due a refund of $26 Million.

Spare me your rhetoric about people not making $7.25 an hour not "paying their own way".

My implication is that those who were doing the gambling on wall street with your's and my money are FAR more responsible for the state of this country than the poor are.

Further if you look at the tax rates and apply common sense you will see that the so called american dream is much harder to realize than one might like to admit.

For instance big_dish is upset that 60% of his paycheck is taken out and he blames that on the 3.6% of the "lazy", while the top 2% holds 90% of the wealth and arent taxed at nearly the rate any of us are. Where is the furvor about that?

I disagree.....

When you add up all the tax dollars that are put into taking care of the poor you are wrong...

Medicare.
Medicaid.
Social Security.
Welfare.
Subsidized food programs for kids...
Head start programs..
Community programs that supplement the poor such as Lima Allen County Community Affairs(LACCA) where I am from....
Subsidized housing.
Extra calls for police and fire...
Soon to be subsidized health care....
The list goes on and on.....

....and so the smart asses of this board don't start with the kill the rabbit type rhetoric towards republicans.....

I have no problem taking care of those who are not physically/mentally capable.....

I do have a problem with Joe and Jill Bob Dumbass who keep poppin out kids because they get free stuff from the government especially when the money usually does not go to take care of the kids.....

You want a radical idea.......

I think if you want welfare a birth control shot should be required......

Bernie MADE-OFF 50 billion by himself. One man took enough money that could have easily funded some of these programs you list. The bonus programs at goldman sachs for FRAUD easly could have too. And I havent even touched on the fact that there was likely more fraud, those are just the cases of those who got caught.

Then prosecute and get everything back you can.

Make better regulations....

Insure the consumer not the business....

Educate people on better investing....

...and finally make people realize they also have accountability in their investments....

How often do you check your deferred compensation program?

I check mine about three times a week.

Head start, how is educating the children a bad thing? I would think someone like you who hates paying for the poor would want to invest in them so that they can get out of the situation they are in so that you dont have to, same for the Subsidized food programs for kids and same for all the medical programs.

My wife is a head start teacher....

Most of the kids she gets it is obvious they are not given any attention to at home. The parents rely on Head Start to feed the children and usually expect it to be a day care.

It is funded for poor families who can not afford a standard preschool. If you are a parent then you realize preschool is no longer a luxury....it is pretty much standard and needed so kids are not behind when they start kindergarten.
