Yankees owner George Steinbrenner reportedly dies after heart attack

Former New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has died, according to reports from The Associated Press and the New York Daily News.

Steinbrenner, the former owner known as "The Boss" for his tempestuous style, suffered a massive heart attack at the age of 80.

The Tampa Tribune website said emergency crews went to his home on Monday night.

Well if this isn't going to fire the yankees up to win one for George, I'm not sure what will. That man knew how to get what he wanted.

yes and no. For as many titles as they won (7 under George), I'd say that the Yankees are the definition of underachieving. With as much money as he was throwing around, they should have won the world series every year. Instead, they'd choke most years against less talented teams.

I couldn't stand that guy but its hard to argue against his success. People seem to forget that when he took over the Yankees in 1973, they were a [i]terrible[/i] baseball team. New York was a Mets town back then.

As far as a business decision goes, buying the Yankees for 8 million (and only roughly $167k of that money was Steinbrenner's) to have it turned into the most valuable sports franchise in the world is pretty amazing.
