Sources: Lewis could pursue Pitt opening

Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis may not wait to hear if owner Mike Brown wants to bring him back. Instead, a source close to Lewis said the 2009 NFL Coach of the Year may pursue the open job at the University of Pittsburgh after spending the past eight years with the Bengals. NFL Network reported earlier in the day that the university, which fired head coach Michael Haywood on Saturday, was interested in Lewis.

"Marvin is from that area and I think he's very interested," the source said of the Pennsylvania native. A team source indicated that members of the coaching staff believe Lewis will not return, even if asked to come back.

The Pitt job became available again a little more than two weeks following the resignation of Dave Wannstedt. Haywood was fired one day after being arrested on a felony domestic abuse charge in Indiana.

As for Lewis, he has become increasingly disenchanted with the way the Bengals have been run by Brown. Among his frustrations are that the Bengals have a smaller scouting staff and require the coaching staff to do much of the scouting of college players in the offseason.

Lewis won coach of the year honors after leading the Bengals to a 10-6 mark last season, the second winning season during his tenure. However, the Bengals, who had only two winning seasons in the 16 years before Lewis took over and have made the playoffs in back-to-back years only once in the team's 43-year history, regressed to 4-12 this year.

My guess:

"a source close to Lewis" = his agent
"may pursue the open job at the University of Pittsburgh" = wants to stall Pitt in case no good options pan out

Other than the fact that Marvin is a football coach from Pennsylvania, I just don't see why people think he wants to coach in college... particularly at a mediocre football program like Pitt. For the last 30 years, Marvin has been working his way up the football ladder. Hell, he hasn't even sniffed the college game in 20 years.

Wannstedt is the only NFL head coach I can think of who moved down to college, and that was because he got crushed and was looking for a quiet little place for his career to die.

Will Marvin go back home?

Nobody knows what Marvin Lewis is going to do right now. Not the players, and not even the coaches. I reached out to both today and the players are clueless, and after this season, nobody seems worried about it. And I hear the coaches will get word tomorrow at the earliest of the decision. There are a few places in the NFL that Marvin can land as a HC or high paid DC, but he would have to wait until others get interviewed. The one thing that is in Marvin's favor is that he made it known a year ago that he wasn't signing his extension. That gave any team that had interest, time to dig around and do their homework about what is wrong in Cincy. People in the NFL think highly of Marvin. Timing will be an issue. Who walks away from a HC job in the NFL without something good lined up? I think he should take the Pitt job if they come calling. I told Marvin that over a month ago when we spoke. He is from Pittsburgh, and coached at Pitt and the Steelers. College coaches that win are getting paid NFL type money these days so money shouldn't be an issue. The recruiting and dealing with boosters would probably take time getting used to, but I think he would grow into it.

I really don't think we have to worry about that--there is no way SF will sign Marvin.

If they DON'T sign Harbaugh then I would have to think he has some kind of shot albeit small.
