We went and saw Heat this past weekend.  I thought it was wretched.  Others laughed quite a bit, however.  I guess I just don't find Melissa McCarthy all that funny--she plays the same character in every movie.  Loud, obnoxious, sloppy...but with a troubled past and a heart of gold.  Ugh.

I saw Despicable Me 2 on Saturday morning, don't recall much about the original but the 3-D is very effective.  There are some funny moments, it's worth paying the 3-D price but not the full price.

Saw Lone Ranger last week, sucks beyond belief, very boring, and Depp's comic relief doesn't help one bit.  Do not waste your money.

I hope it doesn't kill Hammer's career.  He's a solid actor, and Lone Ranger seems to be more of a script issue.

at the same time, I hope it frees up Depp (who ironically didn't sign on for lone ranger sequels...at least yet) to maybe take on Dr. Strange for Marvel.  They are looking for the Dr. Strange character to basically take over for Iron Man as the tentpole character of their universe.  They're gonna need a star for the role.

The Lone Ranger ads I've seen are redolent with the putrescence of a box office stinker

I had a bad feeling about Lone Ranger as soon as I heard Depp was doing Tonto.

Especially after seeing the makeup.  He looks more like a south american head hunter than an Apache.

I don't think that's much of an issue.  He's been respectful to the character, and has a small percentage of Indian heritage in his background.

IMO the issues seem more to be a dull script and the fact that Westerns aren't really "in" right now.

I think its both for me at least, Depp as Tonto, and a script that just from the previews looks God awful.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm holding out hope that I get these experiences.  My daughter likes star wars and superheros now, I just hope she still does when she's old enough to watch more than just parts of the movies (superhero ones that is, she's watch phantom menace and a new hope - yes, I made the mistake of not having her watch the Star Wars movies in the right order. )

a proud day to take my daughter to the doctor, come home and my other daughter and wife are on the couch watching The Avengers on their own.

That movie "Pacific Rim" is coming out soon and got some pretty good reviews.  I thought it looked wretched but maybe I could give it a shot.

Also, I can't help but auto-complete the name to "Pacific Rim Job," which I'm sure will be the name of the Asian-themed porn

Guillermo del Toro has done alot of good movies so I'm not surprised it's getting good reviews.

We went and saw Grown Ups 2 this week. The story line is pretty dumb but there are some seriously funny, laugh out loud moments in the movie. The scene with the grade school dance teacher is worth the price of admission all by itself.

since it will be awhile before I see it, how do they rationalize all 4 of them moving home at the same time?  I see that as a big sticking point plot wise.

Rob Schnieder (sp?) isn't in this one. I don't know if he had a scheduling conflict or if him and Adam Sandler had a falling out. Anyway, I think AS character moves back to small town America to give his kids a more realistic up-bringing. The other guys never moved away, or that's what the movie would have you believe.
