Reds 'working hard' on deal with Votto

The Reds are "working hard" at a three-year contract for National League MVP Joey Votto, Sports Illustrated 's Jon Heyman tweets .

Cincinnati general manager Walt Jocketty has repeatedly said this offseason that he hoped to avoid arbitration and work out a long-term deal with his first baseman.

Votto is arbitration-eligible for the first time and Heyman suggests a deal would be for three years, buying out his arbitration-eligible years, and still allow Votto to be eligible for free agency following the 2013 season. Heyman tweets the deal would "likely" be for "about $37 million." That would give Votto a large payday, as well as give the Reds cost certainty for the next three years.

Earlier this offseason, the team signed Jay Bruce -- arbitration-eligible as a "Super Two" -- to a six-year deal worth $51 million, also avoiding arbitration.

Votto is one of four arbitration-eligible Reds remaining, along with left-handed reliever Bill Bray and right-handed starters Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez. Cincinnati hasn't gone to arbitration with a player since 2004, when the team beat Chris Reitsma.

I don't think Votto wanted to sign a longer deal. I believe he wanted to be a free agent in 2013 and get the big pay day.

I dunno. He just got roughly $13 million/yr. Can't imagine he'll command too much more at the age of 30 unless he really tears it up these next 3 years.

Werth just got 18 mill/yr and he is 31. Howard just got 25 million/yr and he is 31. Plus contracts are only going to go up over the next three years. If he produces like he did this year over the next three years, he will easily make 20 million a year.

Also Pujols is going to get some crazy contract next year that will only help Votto make more.

30 isn't in baseball what it is in football.

Especially for a first baseman.

I just spoke to Joey Votto at the airport. He's catching a flight back to Florida. He says there's no significance in the fact that the deal is three years. He could walk when it's up.

"But I can't imagine playing anywhere else," he said. "I enjoy myself. I can't imagine being with a better team. The Yankees or Red Sox — that's a lot to deal with. I don't want to go anywhere else."

"Three years was just what he came to," he said. "I'm very happy. I don't have to fool with arbitration. It's cost certainty."

Votto said his agent and Reds did most of the talking. "They may have talked a longer deal," he said.

Update: Votto just did a very short conference call. Again, he downplayed the number of years.

"It has nothing to do with getting to free agency, although some people took it that way," he said. "I can't imagine playing anywhere else.
