George Mason's Jim Larranaga has had serious discussions with Miami officials about the ACC school's coaching vacancy, multiple sources told CBSSports.com on Thursday. Whether Larranaga is leveraging for a better deal from George Mason or on the verge of actually moving to Miami is unclear, both sources said. But the talks are advanced and ongoing, and the 61-year-old New York native has developed into Miami's top target.

Miami is searching for a replacement for Frank Haith.

Haith left earlier this month to replace Mike Anderson at Missouri.

Larranaga has spent 14 seasons at George Mason.

He famously led the Colonial school to the 2006 Final Four.

Close to a done deal:

George Mason's Jim Larranaga has agreed in principle to become the next men's basketball coach at Miami, a source told CBSSports.com on Friday.

An official announcement is expected soon.

CBSSports.com first reported early Thursday that Larranaga and Miami were in advanded discussions. George Mason officials subsequently acknowledged they had granted Miami permission to speak with Larranaga, and a deal is now in place. Larranaga coached the Patriots the past 14 seasons. The highlight of his tenure was an improbable trip to the 2006 Final Four. He also won four CAA regular-season titles.

Larranaga is replacing Frank Haith.

Haith left Miami earlier this month for Missouri.

On the surface this move makes little sense considering Larranaga had rejected overtures from power-conference schools before. Combine that with the fact that the core of his 27-win team was returning, and there's no obvious reason for Larranaga to leave one of the best CAA jobs for one of the worst ACC jobs ... except for money. Larranaga was scheduled to make between $525,000 and $700,000 at George Mason next year (depending on bonuses). His deal at Miami, a source said, will be worth more than $1 million annually.

Assistants are going to join him:

CORAL GABLES, FLA. - University of Miami head men's basketball coach Jim Larranaga has announced that Eric Konkol, Michael Huger and Chris Caputo have joined his Hurricanes staff as assistant coaches. All three assistants worked with Larranaga at George Mason.

"I'm delighted that my three sidekicks from the last few years will be joining us at the University of Miami," said Larranaga. "Chris Caputo has been with me for nine years, Eric Konkol for seven and Coach Huger for four. They each bring a unique set of skills to our program.

"We have been a team with great chemistry, a coaching staff with great chemistry - and we will build that kind of team chemistry with our team players here at Miami as well."

Konkol enters his eighth season as a member of Larranaga's staff, previously working with him at Mason from 2002-03 through 2004-05 and 2007-08 through last season. In the interim, he spent two years coaching high school basketball in Minnesota and had a short stint on the coaching staff at North Dakota State. Konkol previously worked on Buzz Peterson's staff as a student assistant at Tulsa in 2000-01 and as a graduate administrative assistant at Tennessee in 2001-02.

Since rejoining Larranaga's staff, he helped guide the Patriots to four-straight postseason appearances - including NCAA berths in 2008 and 2011.

A native of Amherst, Wis., Konkol is a 2000 graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire and played three seasons of basketball for the Division III program - advancing to the national championship game in 2000. Konkol spent his first two years, including one redshirt season, at the University of Wisconsin at Platteville playing for current Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan.

Huger enters his fifth season as an assistant coach for Larranaga and his seventh as a collegiate coach. In four seasons at George Mason, he helped lead the Patriots to the postseason every year and to a school-record tying 27 wins in 2011 - including an NCAA Tournament second-round victory over Villanova. He began his coaching career at Longwood University (Va.) under Mike Gillian, a former Mason assistant coach under Larranaga, where he spent two seasons.

A native of New York City, Huger is a 1994 graduate of Bowling Green State University where he played for Larranaga from 1989-93. He earned Mid-American Conference honors in his final two seasons, and was a Naismith Award nominee and the runner-up for conference player of the year as a senior. As a prep player, he helped lead Stevenson High School to back-to-back PSAL City Championships in 1988 and 1989.

Before joining the coaching ranks, Huger played professional basketball in Europe for 12 years - earning Dutch League MVP honors in 1996 after averaging 25.3 points and 5.8 assists. He also earned First Team All-Belgium honors in 2000 and 2004 after leading his clubs to Belgium Cup championships in both seasons.

Not a bad replacement, he went to the ncaa finals in 04, looks like he recruited Chris Bosh to GA Tech too, perhaps he can get some good recruits to Mason.

Mason Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Tom O’Connor formally introduced Paul Hewitt as the ninth head men’s basketball coach in program history on Monday, May 2. The 48-year-old Hewitt arrives in Fairfax following an 11-year stint as head coach at Georgia Tech.

Hewitt led the Yellow Jackets for 11 seasons, guiding them to five NCAA tournament appearances, including a national runner-up finish in 2004, as well as two ACC Championship title game appearances. Under Hewitt, the 2001 ACC Coach of the Year and 2004 BCA National Coach of the Year, Tech compiled a record of 190-162 (.540), including a mark of 7-5 in NCAA Tournament play. The Yellow Jackets also appeared in the NIT twice under Hewitt, advancing to the quarterfinals in 2003.

Among his notable achievements at Georgia Tech, Hewitt is regarded as a top-level recruiter, having sent 10 players to the NBA, including five first-round draft selections. Under Hewitt, six Yellow Jacket players earned first- or second-team All-ACC honors, along with three ACC Rookie of the Year selections and seven all-freshman selections.

Hewitt’s coaching career extends beyond the college game, as he currently serves as the head coach of the USA Basketball Under-19 Team. Serving as an assistant coach, he helped lead the USA Basketball Under-18 Team twice to gold medals, taking home first place in 2006 and 2010.

Off the court, Hewitt involved himself in the community while in Atlanta. He has conducted an annual golf outing and auction to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Atlanta. Hewitt has served on the board of directors for Hearts Everywhere Reaching Out for Children (H.E.R.O.), which organizes activities and benefits HIV-infected children, and Camp Twin Lakes, which works with children with serious illnesses and special needs.

Prior to his arrival in Atlanta, Hewitt spent three seasons as the head coach at Siena, earning his first head coaching position at the age of 32 and amassing a record of 66-27 (.710). There, he guided the Saints to two postseason appearances, including a MAAC Tournament championship and NCAA berth in 1999. The prior year, the Saints were conference runners-up in Hewitt’s first season at the helm, and in 2000, he led Siena to a 24-9 record, a MAAC regular-season title, and to the second round of the NIT. In 14 total seasons as a head coach, Hewitt’s career record stands at 256-189 (.575).

Before beginning his head coaching career, Hewitt spent nine years as an assistant coach, concluding with five seasons at Villanova. He also served as an assistant at Fordham (1990-92), Southern California (1989-90) and C.W. Post (1988-89).

Hewitt is a 1985 graduate of St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y., where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Cardinals. Hewitt and his wife, Dawnette, have three daughters, Olivia, Danielle and Kayla.

If Mason doesn't lose anyone (there are rumors about one of their top scorers transferring), they will be pre-aeason top 25 for this coming season.

Did you forget about '06? They ended up eighth in the nation when it was all said and done and was 25th ranked at one point in the 2005-06 season .
