"As I looked at the other guys that were coming out, who would I sleep better at night having? It was Andy (Dalton) ... If I could do a backflip I would do it. We're starting fresh with a new guy and a new skill group. We've got a bunch of young ones that we can get going all in the right direction and that's encouraging. They are all hungry and young together like we did in the first group. They're all in a three-year window. We can reestablish the bar and I don't see any impediments to that."

Remember, right before draft day there was talk of Dalton going #8 to the Titans ... so the Bengals could have gotten 2 top 10 picks ...

A Case for the Titans Drafting Andy Dalton with the 8th Pick of the 2011 NFL Draft
April 27, 2011

http://www.musiccitymiracles.com/2011/4/27/2135049/titans-drafting-andy-dalton-8th-pick-2011-nfl-draft

EXCERPTS:
"Of all the top QB's heading into the draft, Dalton had the best accuracy of the pack in 2010. Additionally, the general rule when evaluating draft prospects is that they have at least a 60% career completion percentage. Dalton comes in at 61.7%, meeting the requisite baseline for success."

"In the case of accuracy, especially short and intermediate throws, Dalton easily passes both the statistical and the eyeball test."

"Dalton is plenty tall to be successful in the NFL."

"As noted in Dalton's Pro Day results: On one throw, he rolled out right and completed a 60-yard pass on the run, which is important when evaluating at his arm strength."

"In the couple of times I've gotten to see him on the whiteboard he has blown me away. He's not only regurgitating plays like some of the other prospects, but he seems to have a genuine understanding of "why" and not just "what"."

"Moreover, he had complete command of the offense at TCU, with the ability to make audibles to the line, receivers, and plays."

"In those meetings he's displayed superior football knowledge to that of his peers."

"When I watch Dalton, he has a drive and a passion that I don't see out of many prospects. There's anguish on his face when Gruden shows him his interception against Wisconsin where the checkdown is wide open in the flat. When the play shows up on the screen, the viewer can see that Dalton immediately recognizes the play and we see how much it pains him. It's a stark contrast to other prospects (Newton, Gabbert) who also identify mistakes, but seem to laugh it off. Dalton, even in a winning Rose Bowl effort, still seems haunted by this play. That is what I want to see out of my signal caller. Someone that demands perfection, even in a winning effort; constantly critical of their own QB play."

"is Andy Dalton a good bet to become a franchise quarterback? Based on my research, I would pull the trigger at 8."

"There's no such thing as a sure pick. With Dalton, though, he appears to have all the necessary prerequisites. And, more importantly, he comes across as the hardest working QB in this draft. When you combine those things, Andy Dalton has all the tools in place to possibly become a franchise quarterback, and that makes him worth the risk in the top 10."
BJ, you are a false prophet. Nobody should believe you anymore.

I'm not asking anyone to believe me ... I'm asking them to believe Marvin Lewis, Jay Gruden, Ken Zampese, Todd McShay, Mel Kiper, Trent Dilfer, the NFL scouts, those who get paid to study QB prospects, those who have played QB in the NFL, and those people for the Bengals who have spent months studying Dalton and watching every single play from his college career.

That combined with their own eyes of Palmers play and his 4-12 season last year are enough I'd say. :morning1:

I really don't think any of the coaches even want Palmer back. They want a clean slate with the new offense we'll be running. Hungry players who want to be here. Plus Dalton fits the system that Gruden wants to run, Palmer doesn't.

Why spend valuable time teaching Carson the playbook?

I will admit, I would take Carson back if he wanted to come, just because his experience would give us a very good chance of making the playoffs this year, IMHO. But, the gambler in me, says to give Dalton the Fucking Reins and see what you've got. He just reeks of Kenny Anderson, and with all of the skill players but Benson being young, and with Gruden being the ringmaster, I think in two or three years they could be one of the best offenses in the league.

BJ did say Von Miller was a top 3 pick way before anybody else even thought he'd be. I don't ever want to see Palmer in a Bengal uniform again

Exactly! The Bengals have decided to go off-roading, and thus don't need a beat up Porsche with 150,000 miles on it - when they have a brand new and cheaper jeep.

Gruden's offense is predicated on short accurate throws and having a mobile qb.

especially when you already know that for the past 7 hands (years) you've never had anything better than a pair of nines.

I also said months before the draft that JJ Watt should be the first DE taken, Locker should go top 10 and before Gabbert, that Dareus would go before Fairley etc.

Now I do make some wrong predictions (especially when they involve my personal weakness of 340 lb + DT's) but I also occasionally get some things right. I'm not a "prophet" or a psychic, just a long-time football fan who pays far more attention to the game than I probably should.
