Probally not all of it no, but personnally I dont get why we just dont give the law enforcement people top seceret clearances, then we wouldnt have to tell you people what were doing. (Says the man with a secret clearance)

sis, i'm confussed a little about your earlier reply to me... what was i wrong about? i'll be honest w/ you, and say that i haven't read through the actual patiot act, but i am confident that the main purpose was to pretty much force the fbi and cia to share their info (the two agencies used to butt heads, for one reason or another)... i know that the bill does more than that, including allowing (under exteme circumstances) searching and seizing w/out a search warrent... that is one of the more contriversial parts of it, but also one of the most important... this (supposedily) hasn't even been used yet, b/c there hasn't been any extreme cases, but i'm personally glad its there, if we do need it...

rick, what I am opposed to is many of the personal freedoms (like the search and seizure part) that are being handed to the authorities here. We all know what happens when you start to give too much power to people. It goes to their heads, and they start finding ways to justify "extreme cases" that really aren't so extreme.

I personally don't think all of those measures are necessary. In fact, we HAD many of the methods in place to stop 9/11 as it was. We just aren't all mindreaders to be able to determine which threat is gonna attack when all the time. We NEVER will be able to do that.

I personally am not ready to give up that many of my freedoms in the name of security. Our government blows money and screws up so many programs as it is...what makes us think they will do any better with this. I feel that the abuse of this act will happen far more than any good that may come from it.

Not to mention, we are still allowing people across the boarder and on planes with weapons while taking breast milk from mothers and finger nail clippers from old ladies.

one thing to keep in mind though, is the lack of complaints that the patriot act has recieved as of now...

i absolutely agree about one part of this post though... if you give anyone/thing too much power, they WILL use it... that is scary in any form, and true in almost everything... its human nature..

but in my humble opinion, in the case of terror where they fight behind the scenes and on our own soil, we need to have some extreme measures... we need to let these guys do their job, but have oversight to make sure that they didn't break the law... i know this sounds somewhat harsh, but as long as these groups are balanced out by the courts soon after the search takes place... in other words, i'd rather the fbi/cia try to stop these types of acts before tehy happen, rather than wait until we are possibly hit, and then worry about who did it and how we fucked up...(b/c often times we know who is a problem, but evidence is hard to come by w/ our lack of organization) i would rather us have a small human rights problem, than another terrorist attack...

I see what you are saying, but I think the government is playing on our fears right now and slipping in things that they don't need to. Like the REAL ID they slipped in that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the bill they stuck it with. They know people are more willing to give up rights right now. Especially since they are going color crazy with those damn alerts. Talk about crying wolf.

i think the gov't using scare tactics is a old and effictive way for them to get things done (not that i agree w that)

your right, not many would have agreed to this until after 9/11...

i have no idea what the alerts mean either

i think the real ID act is essential, b/c the 9/11 highjackers had something like 30-40 driver licenses... i haven't followed this legislation very closely... is there something else in there i don't know about?

btw... i hate to keep posting serious stuff, when this thread was just getting good

The REAL id is not necessary in my opinion. I don't see why states just can't share license info. Many do already. But storing more personal stuff all in one place...again, I think it's too much for one organization to control. It leads to corruption. I don't like it.
