Bengals looking for fast start
Fans can watch team practice this weekend

By Mark Curnutte
Enquirer staff writer

The Bengals wrap up their offseason conditioning program this weekend with their mandatory three-day, five-practice minicamp.

And their collective eye is focused on Sept. 11 and the opening game of the season at Cleveland.

"The biggest thing is, opening day, we have to come out ready to play ball," said center Rich Braham, who just signed for two more seasons. "We can't sit back and lose one or two games. Teams aren't going to wait around; they're going to win early and often. We have to be ready."

The focus of minicamp remains the importance of a quick start during the regular season.

The first two Marvin Lewis teams got off to 1-4 starts, which doomed playoff hopes that were fragile to begin with.

The 2005 Bengals are the third version of the Lewis era, and this team already is shaping up differently than the two previous.

"Roles have been defined more," fourth-year tight end Matt Schobel said. "You know what to expect and what you're expected to do. I'm speaking for the offense obviously, and everyone wants their role to expand.

"At this time of the year, coaches are rolling us through and having us do everything, not just what we did last year."

Schobel led the team's tight ends for the third consecutive season in catches and receiving yards.

"Each guy knows what his role has been when we've been successful in the past, and knows they're expecting you to do that and more," he said. "You want to prove you can do more.

"Really, at every position, we're all trying to become more complete players."

Though the team appears unified in its goal of getting off to a fast start and ending the franchise's 14-year playoff drought, players know overall improvement involves each individual improving his game.

"I think everybody is just worrying about themselves and just trying to get themselves better and helping the team," said sixth-year long snapper Brad St. Louis.

The Bengals held their rookie minicamp April 30-May 1. The full-squad camp is required for the entire team, including all seven of the still-unsigned rookie draft picks.

The mandatory camp comes at the end of four weeks of on-field coaching sessions. Each NFL team is allowed up to 14 on-field coaching sessions in spring ball, per the league's collective bargaining agreement.

"The minicamp coming up is not going to be any different than the on-the-field days we just had," St. Louis said. "The intensity we've had and the urgency are going to be there."

Fans also will have the opportunity to watch the team practice Saturday afternoon inside Paul Brown Stadium on the game field. All stadium gates will open at 2 p.m. to allow fans in for the practice, which will run 3-5 p.m.

A "Kids Autograph Session" will be held from 5-5:20 p.m. Parking will be available for $3 in Lots D and E off Mehring Way.

Fans wishing to purchase season tickets can participate in a "Select A Seat" event from noon-3 p.m. Gate B will open for those fans.

They will see a team that has the same lofty expectations that many fans have: that the streak of seasons without a playoff game will end. The minicamp is another step in the process.

"It allows the coaches to put little wrinkles in about teams you're going to face," said Braham, the senior Bengal who joined the team in 1994. "It's real beneficial, because we get to spend a lot of time together, especially as offensive linemen, knowing each other and how we're going to react in certain situations. I think the team is progressing well."

It's settled then.

GATE B AT 1:45PM TOMORROW

I'll even set some clothes out now for the event. Long pants, a tan baseball hat, and a white polo shirt with the Tide Racing Team emblem. I'll also probably sport my ankle injury limp a little bit. :) Calling me mongo is just fine. Walking up to me and using my real name would put me in a panic thinking I should know you from gradeschool or something (probably make me wonder if I owe you money :D ).
you can call me ryan.. or go.. or jesus... probably the first or third options..
