Go Skins
http://news.yahoo.com/local-official-seeks-split-california-201438204.html RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Thirteen mostly conservative California counties would break away to create a 51st state known as South California under a proposal by a local elected official. Republican Jeff Stone has asked fellow members of the Riverside County Board of Supervisors to support a motion to bring together officials from the 13 counties to discuss the idea. A vote is scheduled for Tuesday. Stone says California is too big to govern, which has led the state to raid local government coffers because of runaway spending. Stone's version of South California would not include Los Angeles County. Instead, it would encompass coastal Orange and San Diego counties, and inland Fresno, Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, Riverside, San Bernardino and Tulare counties. It would have a part-time Legislature and no term limits.
sois
Yes, and Alaska too so Texas can reclaim both top spots in population and size.
Xombie
Don't have a clue whether or not that this could ever come to pass, but, if it did, any idea of the number of representatives that this new state would garner? Would it be the previous census numbers of the area or would it simply be half of California's previous total until the next census?
BigDawgBengal
Southern California is basically a different state already. It should be called North Mexico.

Ben
I do not know California all that well, but it sounds like they want to take the areas with the most tax revenue and create a separate state and screw over northern california?
Go Skins
http://www.wjla.com/articles/2014/09/senate-hearing-on-d-c-statehood-to-take-place-next-week-106901.html A Senate committee announced Monday that it will hold a hearing next week on a bill that would make the District the nation's 51st state. Next Monday's hearing will be the first on statehood for the nation's capital in more than 20 years. Advocates argue that only with statehood will the District's 646,000 residents gain the same rights enjoyed by the rest of the U.S. population. Opponents say the nation's founders intended for the city to remain a federal enclave. The bill has the support of Senate Democrats including majority leader Harry Reid, but it's not expected to go anywhere in the Republican-led House. ValleyBengal
Imagine all the business this would create for all the new flag merch that will need to be made in China. Woo hoo! Where are they gonna fit the additional star?
CincyInDC
not going to happen. Republicans would not abide two additional democratic senators. I liked Lieberman's idea from several years ago...eliminate federal income tax for those living in the district until those people attain full representation. No taxation without representation.
