Donte Whitner agrees to a 2 year deal! Then he doesn't and signs with the $49ers

Recommended Posts

According to some Bills boards (who think he's gone to Cincy) and a tweet from Joe Reedy the Bengals are negotiating with S Donte Whitner. More links available on Bengals.com Jungle Noise FA section. If he signs, AND passes a physical, good news or bad news?

I asked Joe Reedy if the Bengals were close to signing Whitner.

Wow, the reviews on Donte from the Bills board are less than flattering. They seem to think he is absolutely awful:

They are bills fans, what do they know.

That's what Jacksonville thought of Reggie Nelson too. Our DB coaches are some of the best in the NFL.

The Bills fans are just trying to come to terms with the fact that Whitner won't be a Bill much longer. They'd be singing a different tune if he resigned.

I imagine fans know their team.

That said I do think he's an upgrade over crocker imo.

Meh...you have some people on here thinking Carson palmer was the worst qb ever, and some thinking our oline was top 10. Lets be honest, fans over value and under value their own players a lot, when most the time the player is somewhere in between.

Maybe, maybe not. As Bengals fans, I didn't see anyone here saying that Jonathan Joseph sucked. I doubt we'd be saying that if someone else grabbed Brandon Johnson or any other number of guys.

We might be saying that if someone grabbed Nate Livings and I definitely remember us saying that when Eric Ghiachuc left. I doubt we'd be singing a different tune if a guy like that re-signed here.

I think its at least a concern that multiple people in that thread said he was the worst player on the team.

All that being said, I loved the guy at OSU and I've been surprised he's struggled so much in the pros. I hope we bring him in and let him compete. I just think some here remember how high he is drafted and think he's a different caliber of player than he really is...

I'm not real high on the guy... I thought he'd be good as a pro, but he hasn't done much. In 5 years, 5 INTs, 1.5 sacks and 3 FFs, despite 66 starts. I do agree that Coyle and Zim are excellent teachers, so maybe they can rectify that. But hell, Ndukwe, a part time guy with 31 starts in 4 years, has made more big plays than him.

Just not that excited about the prospect, although his youth is in his favor, I guess.

I honestly don't know for sure, but hasn't the Bills pass rush been about as crappy, if not worse, than the Bengals over the last few years?
