CincinnatiBengals owner Mike Brown was trending on Twitter this weekend, thanks to the bizarre "commitment" speech he gave at the opening of the Ben-gals' camp last week.

Which is appropriate. You have to be awfully bad to make news for being bad, and that is what the Bengals have accomplished before the season has even started.

Sports will go on, however, and the circle will continue. Fans and the press will rant and rave, while Brown continues to operate his franchise like he always has. To the Bengals, legalities -- and the contractual obligations of Hamilton County taxpayers, season ticket holders and players - will always trump little things like wins.

The worst part? It shouldn't have been this way. Carson Palmerand Marvin Lewis strode into town at nearly the same time. Palmer was one of the top three quarterbacks in the league at one point. Lewis was upbeat, personable, and seemed to be the transformative power the franchise so desperately needed.

That's gone now. Bruce Gradkowski is now the starting quarterback and will soon be known alongside the likes of Scott Mitchell and Gus Frerotte. There won't be any more drives by Chad Ochocinco to keep games from blacking out because Ochocinco is no longer in town. Lewis is still around, but looks beaten and is as surly as the owner.

With better moves over the years, and some flexibility, it didn't have to be this way. Worse yet, Brown doesn't seem capable of understanding that. It should have been different and that's the biggest shame of all.

Who are these fucking tools that write for the DDN? Are they just letting people off the street write this shit? What the fuck is going on up there?

the head of the sports department, and most of the writers, at DDN are Browns fans.

At the end of the day. Marvin Lewis, Carson Palmer, and Chad Johnson the 3 main guys went 8-8 and 4-12 after winning the division.

It's that simple. Both offseasons produced viable NFL quality parts to the existing holes leading up to those seasons.

In 2006 the team missed by a missed field goal in making back to back winning/playoff seasons. However, there were several blown halftime leads. 2010 several losses by a TD or less.

History will punch the punching bag Owner. Yes, he deserves alot of blame too. I do think Marvin, Carson, and Chad own alot more of the blame for the current reputation of this franchise than they are getting.

Marvin, Carson, and Chad have not progressed this franchise beyond the Mike Brown reputation.
