If I'm Ralph Wilson or Mike Brown, I'm on the phone w/the commish about Vick's claim that the league steered him to Philly. And I'm ticked.

Weird how he didn't want Vick to go to the 2 teams that voted against him being the commissioner. Almost like he didn't want them to succeed.....
I know we both voted against the previous CBA, but both of us voted against him as comish too?

For two years, it has been known that the Bengals offered Michael Vick a two-year contract and that he signed with the Eagles. What we didn’t know though until this week is that Vick believed Cincinnati and Buffalo were better options.

Said Vick in a profile in this month’s GQ article written by Deadspin’s Will Leitch:
“I think I can say this now, because it’s not going to hurt anybody’s feelings, and it’s the truth. I didn’t want to come to Philadelphia. Being the third-team quarterback is nothing to smile about. Cincinnati and Buffalo were better options.”
Leitch goes on to add that the Bengals and Bills would have allowed him to start but after a meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and league reps, Vick was convinced to sign with Philadelphia.

Said Vick of going to the Eagles: “And I commend and thank them, because they put me in the right situation.”

Would the Bengals have been the right situation for Vick? Probably not. Could Vick have helped this team out? Absolutely. However, there are a lot of reasons why it would not have worked out.

On field it would have provided a solid insurance policy in case Carson Palmer did not come back from his elbow surgery. In the first eight games of 2009, Palmer averaged over 201.1 yards per game, had thrown 13 touchdowns and led the Bengals to three last-minute comebacks as they won the division and made the playoffs.

Plus I have serious doubts on whether the offensive scheme at the time could have maximized Vick’s talents.

Off field, this team would not have been equipped for the scrutiny and to provide the tools for Vick to have an successful transition and comeback. The public outcry, both locally and nationally, would have been immense. It also would have created a circus atmosphere in the locker room. For a locker room that showed wear and tear from T.Ocho last year, a quarterback controversy that would have had no winners and a fractured locker room.

I agree with Reedy that Vick may not have turned out as well here.

It wasn't Goodell's decision to influence though.

Holy shit..

I hate fucking Vick.. But what Goodell did is outrageous. I wonder how he "convinced" him to go to Philly? I would lay a wager that it was along the lines of "Well, if you sign with either of those two teams, I will be forced to levy a suspension on you for the first part of the year".

You hate people who hurt dogs more than humans? That's so reasonable. Now I think I understand the rest of your opinions.

Most rape/murder victims are usually asking for it. Poor dogs, they are innocent little beings.

You misread and I probably could have been more clear at the same time... it was ascending order, not descending.

ie: Dog torturers (hate them), human rapists (hate them more) and murders (hate them the most)...

Re-reading it now, I should have been more clear.

The rest of your post makes no sense whatsoever.
You hate dog torturers more than you hate stealer fans?

...and you call yourself a Bengal fan?

Heard this on Mike and Mike this morning and I was pretty pissed. Pretty clear league plays favorites now don't you think? Works better for them for a marketing standpoint too. Philly is a much bigger market. Now that he is succesful again, it'll pay bigger divendends for the league. So now we know that free agency isn't operated fairly, how big of a stretch is it to believe they would minipulate games for the leagues benefit as well? Gonna leave it at that, but the whole thing stinks pretty poorly to me. Has since Goodell took over.

Keep in mind Vick is a straight up idiot. The article comes across that Goodell sorta swayed him, but the reality may just be that he's far from a wordsmith (actually I'm rather sure of this) and didn't convey the real essence of what happened at those meetings and what specifically influenced his decision....which leaves room for legitimate reasons for the situation playing out like it did.

No, I just thought my hatred for Stealers fans and their sister wives was automatically taken into account...

I'd put Stealers fans up there with rapists... and some murderers.

Mike Vick just released a statement completely backtracking from his earlier quotes re NFL steering him to Eagles.

NFL says Vick wasn’t steered to Philadelphia

Posted by Mike Florio on August 18, 2011, 1:06 PM EDT

In a new interview with GQ, Eagles quarterback Mike Vick says he wanted to play for the Bills or the Bengals, and that he was steered to Philadelphia.
The league denies that Vick was steered anywhere.

“Michael Vick’s decision on where to play to put himself in the best position to succeed was entirely his own,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tells PFT via e-mail.

“Commissioner Goodell obviously met and spoke to Michael and his representatives as part of his decision on whether to reinstate Michael and on what terms. But the Commissioner would never steer players to or away from particular teams and did not do so in this case.”

NBC’s Tony Dungy, who served as a league-appointed advisor for Vick, expressed doubt earlier today on The Dan Patrick Show that Goodell would have advised Vick to play for the Eagles. Dungy added, however, that Vick received a lot of advice (including from Dungy) that Philadelphia was the best place to go.

It remains to be seen whether Aiello’s remarks will be enough for the folks in Buffalo, many of whom are up in arms about the perceived slight. Former Bills running back Thurman Thomas made an unscheduled call to WGR radio on Thursday, and Thomas wasn’t happy about Vick’s allegation.
“It goes all against what the Commissioner has been trying to do,” Thomas said. “It’s like another slap in the face to the Buffalo Bills. I’m upset about it. I want to know what the whole idea was about wanting him to go to Philadelphia and not Buffalo or Cincinnati. I think Mr. Wilson needs to give the Commissioner a call and see what happened.“It was wrong, I think there needs to be an investigation.”Thomas may be right; we wouldn’t expect the NFL to admit that Vick was steered to Philly, even if his recollection is accurate. But who would conduct an investigation? We’re aware of no “internal affairs” department within the league office, which would have the ability to investigate the conduct of the Commissioner. If anything were to happen, the owners would have to decide to do it on their own, and we doubt that such an effort would be good for the league’s overall best interests.

Damage control.

Yep... Vick has learned not to shit where he eats. Nothing will come of this because all parties will deny it.. But at this point, is there any question that Goodell swings the gavel with biased intent?

Indeed... The question is.. Too dumb to say what he means, or too dumb to think about the ramifications of what he is saying?
