Gotta new Lexus GS350 and love it. I've driven japanese and german and love them. My first car was an 87 pontiac bonniville. Loved it but too many issues.

I wonder if Jamie plays like a g6 while he drives his car :P

Nice!

I like it...my Scion Xa was starting to develop trouble signs...clutch starting to go...100,000 miles, needed new shocks and struts, close to needing a new brake job (with rotors that were warping again)...I will miss the almost 40mpg for sure and not having a car payment, but...this car doesn't even have 10,000 miles on it, is essentially a new car, looks good, is fun to drive, the kids love it...it has a warranty where the Scion's expired when I hit 100 grand on mileage...yeah, gas is going to suck but I get a $250/month stipend from my job so it will cover a lot of it....and I am getting a car that will likely last for the term of the loan and beyond if I am not too hard on it...

Thanks!

Drove a Toyota Camry... was alright but started having oil pump and lifter issues so sold it before it was going to need MAJOR repairs. Had 160,000 on it then. Had an oldsmobile prior to that with 175,000 with no issues whatsoever.

Presently, I drive an 04 Ford Explorer with 138,000... zero issues. Change oil, swap tires, change brake pads is all I've done.

Wife drives a 2002 Ford Excursion (the 7.3 liter diesel)... zero issues. Mother pulls like a bitch - I have a 34' Keystone Cougar that is somewhere around 7500 pounds loaded and I pull it all day on cruise with zero issues. It as 141,000 miles on it. Since I bought it 5 1/2 years ago, when it had 70,000 on it then, I've change brakes, changed the front rotors to the slotted style, new tires, changed oil... oh yeah, change the front ball joints about 10,000 miles ago. No issues otherwise.

When looking for vehicles, I'll look for what I'm wanting to accomplish and go from there. I'll always look at an American car first - if it has what I want then I'm golden. And, I'll always look Ford first. They're the ONLY American manufacturer that took zero ($0) bailout money of the auto manufacturers... they handled their shit like a company should. I'll try to give them my business if they have a product that I like.

Bought a '93 Saturn SL1 new in '93. Totalled twice in 2006-7. First time it was drivable and the other guy's insurance made the payout. I planned to continue driving until the DC tags expired (it would have never passed inspection), but a drunk driver (not me) re-totaled it in the same spot and I got another payout from a different insurance company.

I haven't owned a car since and love it. Once a month or so I rent a drive-now.com car. You find cars by checking the webpage or with a mobile app. You can return the car anywhere in the city (just park it on a street or city lot) and it costs 29¢ a minute while driving and 10¢ a minute while parking: i.e., if I go into a store and want to guarantee the car to be there when I get back. All this includes rental, fuel, insurance and parking. Washington DC just got a similar rental company who is setting up shop (http://www.car2go.com/).

That's really neat for people like you that live in a place where there's such great public transportation that on the rare occasions that you want or need a car you can just walk up and get one...is there some kind of an application process so that they verify that you have a valid driver's license?

I had to go to a "brick-and-mortar" office (Sixt Car Rental -- notice the streetcar shelters in the pic :-P ) and show them my Herman driver's license and my passport card (I ain't carrying a damn passport everywhere). I doubt they would have accepted my KY license. cue joke from Go...

In fairness to Oldschooler, his actual question was, "Is it important to you to buy American?"

In 1993 when I bought that Saturn, yes, it was important to me to buy American. Saturn was still a young company (ahem...division of GM), and they were very good at pointing out the various things they did right versus the rest of the Big Three, which they were admittedly somewhat a part of. I was not disappointed in that car, despite its lousy pickup.

If I bought a car now, I would think long and hard about what was being offered from all suitors, foreign and domestic. Back then I bought American because I felt (and Consumer Reports confirmed) a certain amount of trust that Saturn was producing a product worthy of my meager funds. Nowadays, I would spend more money (although not sure how much) buying a US-make car than a foreign-make car, provided I could trust it [s]wasn't a POS[/s] was a quality automobile. In other words, all other things being equal and even tipped in favor of the fer-ners, yeah, I'd buy US. How far tipped? I can't say. Depends on the situation.

But I'm not buying a car, you lemmings.

2004 Chevrolet 1500 17mpg
1990 F150 15mpg
1978 Camaro 5 to 7 mpg 4:11 gear
My daily driver is a Japanese car,,,hate to admit but that little 1.8litre four banger gets killer gas mileage.

Thought I would never own a foreign car but I got it used and for dirt cheap with low mileage. If I wreck that thing I'm dead, its basically made of tin metal.

The Japs build excellent motors but the cars are not as great as people say. I say this because the frame rails will rot to dust on them things fairly quick. Cheap metal.

Then you'll be stuck with an inferior product and will be putting money into another
Countries economy. While your neighbors and maybe even family members lose their jobs.

only honda/acura and lexus have 4 or 5 star rating in every single category...

As most of you know, I sell cars. I've driven damn near everything on the market. My current demo is a Benz ML 350. Here's my take on cars. If you need a small car, and you've gotta buy an older one, buy Japanese. You don't get creature comforts, but you do get reliability. New small cars, you need to check out ford,gm and Hyundai. The best mid sized car? Under 50, the new body Buick Lacrosse. Over 50, Benz E350. Honda builds a good car in the Accord, but you ain't pullin' no looks driving an Accord.

There are few differences quality wise among any cars sold new in America today. There were, 12 years ago, but the gulf has narrowed over the last 5 years. If you want to buy American, they make really good cars, and if you think the only cars to buy are Japanese, you need to go drive some other cars. You'll quickly find that there are a lot of really great cars out there.

Nice, always did like the Mustangs except for those forgettable years in the mid to late 70's.

I had a Saleen 2005 that I sold a couple years ago. That thing could handle some wicked turns.

My other one went the opposite direction but it could physically go anywhere on just about any type of fuel to include used motor oil, diesel, regular gas, etc...

1970 Kaiser Jeep 2.5 Ton 6 Wheel Drive that I bought at government auction from Fort Knox.

I had ideas of tuning it into an ultimate tailgate vehicle but gave that idea up when I saw that some Jets fan did just that. Sold it about a couple years ago too.

Now, all I have is my 1956 John Deere 420S and my world beater 1992 Jeep Cherokee that has more rust on it has solid metal.

Picture was taken before all the rust set in. This is near the foot of a glacier when I was stationed in Iceland. Sunofabitch just will not die so I keep it.

I've never owned an American car, even when I was in America. They just don't stand up to the Japanese cars. They don't look as nice, they don't last as long......fuck American cars. Now, I understand your ideals, but, if Toyota shut down their plant in Kentucky thousands upon thousands of people would be out of work. Just like the poor bastards up in Detroit. So, no, they aren't American cars by definition, but they are built in America and they make sure that lots of people have jobs. If the big 3 can get their quality and designs up to match I wouldn't have a problem going American. As it stands now, no thanks.
MULLY

BTW, I drive a Honda CrossRoad. 3 years so far and only have oil changes and regularly scheduled maintenance. And I drive a long distance back and forth to work. Already pushing 60,000k (37,300 miles).
