September 2, 201114 yr Author comment_1024842 Hall will be 32 when the deal is done. I'm guessing they went with a 4yr deal so that hall could possibly get one more deal before he retires. Report

September 2, 201114 yr Author comment_1024844 I suspect the next deal will be a 2-3 yr deal for Kyle Cook. Not a stud, but better than many give him credit for, and someone Brown supposedly really likes. Report

September 2, 201114 yr comment_1024849 I think Hall is one of those guys that leads by example and has an awesome work ethic. I remember reading all the articles about how he was helping J-jo become a better tackler in the offseason a couple years back and there was a distinct difference in j-jo's play the following year against the run. Whitworth is obviously a vocal leader now more than ever with Carson being gone. Another player we have locked up for a long time is Peko. I think his high motor and high character personality is vital to not only the Dline but the defense itself. We really made some good moves with all 3 of these guys by not letting them go. I'm not predicting a superbowl this year or anything, but these contract extensions for our hard working vets really go a long way for team morale. Report

September 2, 201114 yr Author comment_1024858
The Cincinnati Bengals reached a four-year, $39 million contract extension with cornerback Leon Hall, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. The deal will keep Hall in Cincinnati through 2015. Here are some thoughts on the signing:

Losing Johnathan Joseph definitely helped Hall in these negotiations. Last summer the Bengals tried extending Joseph, who was entering the final year of his deal. But the team low-balled the corner and eventually couldn't re-sign him. Joseph bolted to the Houston Texans this summer. This year the Bengals learned their lesson and offered Hall market-value. Hall will average nearly $10 million per season.
The next step is on Hall. He is now the Bengals' top cornerback with Joseph gone. Hall is certainly being paid like a No. 1 corner and has to prove it on the field. Look for Cincinnati to put Hall on the opponent's best receiver throughout the season to see how Hall handles those duties.
Cincinnati will go into the season with the cornerback trio of Hall, Nate Clements and Kelly Jennings. If Jennings learns the defense quickly it could be a decent group. The Bengals are not counting on Adam Jones (neck) to start the season. But Jones could eventually bring more athleticism and speed to the Bengals' secondary when he gets healthy. Hall was entering the last year of his contract and like Andrew Whitworth’s deal this will keep him in Cincinnati through the 2015 season. Hall’s base salary will jump from $3 million to $5.1 million this season. The contract also includes a $9 million signing bonus and a $5 million roster bonus next year. After last night’s preseason finale against Indianapolis, Hall was very optimistic that both sides were close to a deal. It was also believed that Hall’s side wanted a deal done by the Sept. 11 opener against Cleveland or else talks would have been suspended until the end of the season. While some will continue to bemoan the departure of Johnathan Joseph to the Texans, if you were going to be able to keep only one of the cornerbacks, it was going to be Hall. It was also going to be extremely difficult keeping two cornerbacks who would average over $9 million a year. While Joseph was extremely athletic, he didn’t have the durability that Hall has. Since being drafted in the first round in 2007, Hall has played in every game (65 including postseason) in his Bengals career, which is the team’s current longest streak of having played every game in a career. He has started the last 57 games at right corner. In four seasons, Hall has led team in interceptions three times and tied for team lead once. He was tied for fifth in the AFC in interceptions last year with five. For his career,he leads the team in interceptions (18, which is sixth on the team’s all-time list) and passes defensed (85).
Posted in: Updates
http://cincinnati.com/blogs/bengals/2011/09/02/hall-re-signs-with-bengals/ Report
September 2, 201114 yr comment_1024874 Move him to RT. He is a natural there. To be honest...and I am not trying to rile things up here. I think this is a brilliant signing for many reasons. The most of which is that I think he is great on the field and in the locker room. One of the smaller ones is that I think when he slows down a little bit, as most corners do, his size and tackling ability will allow him an easy transition to free safety. Probably won't happen during this contract though. Report
