Prison time speculated in Bengals pot case

Police trace mailed shipment to Jerome Simpson's home

CRESTVIEW HILLS– Authorities did not know they were about to converge on the residence of a Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver as they traced a package of drugs mailed from California to Northern Kentucky this week. When they rang the doorbell, they found Jerome Simpson inside, a federal official said Thursday.

“It is not like the package was stamped Jerome Simpson, Cincinnati Bengals,” said Michelle Gregory, spokeswoman for the California Department of Justice.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport Police asked to search the condominium on Mansion Place, and Simpson consented, she said.

In addition to the package of 2.5 pounds of California marijuana, airport police also found six more pounds of pot and paraphernalia inside the home.

In addition to Simpson, Bengals teammate Anthony Collins was present when a woman, Aleen Smith, 27, accepted the package Tuesday. Gregory identified Smith as Simpson’s girlfriend but said she was not sure if the two lived together.

Authorities detained Simpson and Collins, but no one was arrested.

The investigation continues, with federal and state investigators sorting out who will prosecute the case and what charges will be filed - and against whom, Gregory said.

Since the drugs crossed multiple state lines, federal and felony charges are likely and there could be prison time, she said. Conspiracy charges also could come into play.

“These can be very serious charges,” Gregory said. “You are sending illegal drugs through the mail. Depending on the charges, I think at the very least there will be prison time.”

About 10 p.m. Wednesday, authorities made a “welfare check” on Simpson’s Mansion Place residence, according to the Kentucky State Police’s Dry Ridge post. Further details on the incident were not released early Thursday.

Crestview Hills/Lakeside Park Police Capt. Chris Schutte said his agency had never been called to the Mansion Place home prior to the incident Tuesday. Officers from the department assisted Airport Police when the package was delivered, he said.

Airport Police participated in the “controlled delivery” after they learned about the package from Calfornia authorities, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International spokeswoman Barb Schemp said. She would not say anything else about the case, citing an ongoing investigation.

Yeah this shit is straight up retarted....and why did I never even think that I could order weed through the mail?!

It extra sucks because once we saw real football it became clear that this team was a bit better than Dec-August indicated and my expectations were raised (6-8 wins + a huge boost going into 2012). Now guys we were counting on to make a big difference this year have re-introduced a huge void of uncertainty to this season and I fear we'll end up with a top 5 pick again.

I hope Gruden+Andy+Green are the real deal motha fucka's and can find a way to make chicken salad out of chicken shit and get my expectations back up again.

This was an article on yahoo relating to the fantasy fallout in regards to what just happened w/ Rome and potential suspension of Cedric Benson. That parts irrelevant, but i thought the last line says it all.

On Thursday morning, many of us awoke to reports that a loaf of marijuana had allegedly been delivered to the home of Cincinnati Bengals receiver Jerome Simpson(notes).
Here are a few key details, from the Cincinnati Enquirer:
In addition to the package of 2.5 pounds of California marijuana, airport police also found six more pounds of pot and paraphernalia inside the home.
In addition to Simpson, Bengals teammate Anthony Collins(notes) was present when a woman, Aleen Smith, 27, accepted the package Tuesday. Gregory identified Smith as Simpson's girlfriend but said she was not sure if the two lived together. Authorities detained Simpson and Collins, but no one was arrested.
So, um ... 8.5 pounds of marijuana seems like enough to get a fella through the winter. Apparently the 2.5-pounder had crossed multiple state lines prior to delivery, so someone is facing some serious charges here. Simpson was excused from Thursday's practice; his status for Sunday's game against San Francisco is not yet known. His status for eating seven frozen burritos at 2 am is, "[Expletive] YEAH!"
On Thursday afternoon, another member of the Bengals offense made some news — or rather, the NFL made news via running back Cedric Benson(notes).

Benson has reportedly been notified of a <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/MikeSilver/status/116968138616213504">three-game suspension for violations of the player conduct policy. You'll recall that Benson was arrested over the summer, during the lockout, for alleged assault. He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges and served jail time. We originally thought he would avoid league suspension due to the timing of the incident, but apparently not. Yahoo!'s Michael Silver reports that Benson will play in Week 3, then appeal next Tuesday. If his appeal fails, Benson would miss games against Buffalo, Jacksonville, and Indianapolis — and if that happens, fantasy owners become collateral damage in the league's power play. Those three match-ups are zesty.
Bernard Scott(notes) is the priority add if you're shopping for Benson replacements. We've had this fire-drill a few times before. Brian Leonard(notes) should see an uptick in usage, too. If your fake team is off to a strong start, you might consider a lowball offer on Cedric this week. There's a chance this suspension will be reduced, plus the Bengals have the Rams and Cards waiting in Weeks 15-16.
The fantasy fallout from the Simpson situation is fairly minimal, since we're not exactly talking about an unstoppable passing attack here. AJ Green(notes) is already heavily owned in Yahoo! leagues (85 percent), and tight end Jermaine Gresham(notes) is an established commodity as well. If you're in a giant PPR league, maybe you take a shot with Andre Caldwell(notes). He was in line for additional targets following the season-ending injury to Jordan Shipley(notes). But I don't make that recommendation with any real enthusiasm.
Welcome to Bengalness, Andy Dalton(notes). I'd like to say it gets better, but I would have no evidence to support that claim.

It's the media's fault. Dalton will see through this attempt to make one of the best run franchises look like the worse.

Dumb.

Simpson owning a home which had marijuana shipped to it isn't the media's fault. Neither is it the fault of the Bengals... It's the media's fault for falling in line with the NFL's agenda of trying to spin what is a league wide problem off onto a couple small market franchises in order to help preserve the brand.

No. A league wide issue? Yes.

Bengals do not manage the issue as well as other league members in regards the generally accepted measurement of success. Wins.

Describing this as a league wide problem may be true but it is a cop out. Other teams can win consistently dealing in the exact same pool of players.

Dare I assume someone doesn't have 8 lbs of fucking weed at their house without having a prior history with the drug or the activities associated with it.

Seems to me the bengals might need some help keeping tabs on the players they draft and the players they employ.

So wins is the determining factor on how well a team manages their conduct issues? Interesting.

I'm sure Roger agrees with you... Adding in market size and league monetary contributions to the list as well I'm sure.

Your angle is weak sauce.

Wins is the thing people care about.

Bengals get fucked not because of anyone incident. They get fucked because of they high rate of incidents and seemingly caught by surprise with little or no depth.

To defend the bengals problem as a league wide issue is weak sauce. The pool of players will include bad apples, the bengals dont manage it.

What metric would you use to justify they are managing conduct issues effectively? Keep in mind they are on the verge of losing 3 starters.

I don't think there is a league wide issue with the interstate transportation of large quantities pot with the intenet to distribute. This is not a simple blunt found in a car. That rarely even results in an arrest anymore and unless they fail a piss test, not much more is done in the NFL unless other events were included.

I hardly think a player smoking a little dope is considered a league problem to be honest even if a lot do it.

He's a fucking dumbass. Plain and simple. It has nothing to do w/ the national media's fucking agenda. He was WR that was waiting for his chance, finally got that fucking chance, and decided that other shit was more important than fulfilling that role. How is he any different than Chad Ochocinco Johnson who was a stud and decided that football wasnt the most important thing anymore(while he was in Cincy as he stated as much)? Quit w/ the bullshit. Stop being a biased ass fan for two seconds and look at the situation. The fucking guy was a starting and blossoming WR in the NFL! He CHOSE to do the shit he did. Its not the media's fucking fault. Its not Marvin's fault. And it certainly isnt Mike Brown's fault. I stated it yesterday, i love ya Rome and i had been calling for you to get a shot long before you did. But GET FUCKING GOING w/ the bullshit. Shame on you!!!!

Even if he'd gotten arrested, all he said was that it was a rumor. He never said it was false.
If someone tells you that something is 100% rumor, I don't see how you could interpret that any other way than the subject of the rumor is not true.

Do you really think that Jerome was responding to the "hey, I heard a rumor..." with "yes, you are correct, you heard a rumor" ???
