Sad, pathetic "Bengals fans"

Recommended Posts

An "article" from Who Dey Revolution. Dude is practically masterbating to a picture of a near empty PBS.

That, Bengals fans, is a beautiful sight. Particularly the empty club seating level, which is non-shared revenue. I know it feels wrong to embrace the beauty of this picture. But make no mistake, it is beautiful. The only way the Bengals can get better is to make the home stadium environment worse. Don't fight it. Just go with it.

The hardest part for me is that all this sucks for the players, many of whom are very likeable, who are caught in a war between the fans and ownership. If crowds remain lackluster like this (and you should all hope they do) the Bengals will probably perform better on the road this season than in front of a depressingly empty stadium at home (gambling implications?). Just remember, the players will get paid whether or not you give Mike Brown your money. Find other ways to show the players love besides wasting your money on Mikey.

Who Dey everyone! Sunday's game should make you feel better, not worse.

If I thought for a second Mike Brown would hire a GM and more scouts because of low attendance I would agree. The fact of the matter is Mike won't change. The front office "is what it is" until Katie takes over.

KEEPING THEIR WORD: Over the course of the winter, and spring and summer, I heard several Bengals fans tell me that they were giving up their tickets. Some felt they cost too much, some felt they had other things to do, some had a hard time getting somebody to go with them, some didn't like the atmosphere at the stadium, but all were disenchanted by the poor performance of the team. All those other factors would have been ignored if the Bengals were winning. I wondered if those fans would keep their word and stay away. On Sunday they did. Paul Brown Stadium had some 43,000 fans, 20,000 under capacity.

A STATEMENT GAME: I always hear reporters ask players if that was a "statement game." I don't know what the hell that means, especially when you ask that question every time the team wins. Anyway, THIS WAS A STATEMENT GAME FOR THE FANS. They made it clear that they are sick and tired of being fed an inferior product, Sunday after Sunday, year after year.

WILL IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE? Doubtful.

Commentary: Fans boycotting Bengals? That might work

So you Bengals fans want to get Mike Brown's attention? You're on the right track.

Supporters stayed away from Sunday's Bengals home opener in droves. The Associated Press reported 43,363 fans showed up for Cincinnati's 13-8 loss to the 49ers, the smallest crowd for a home opener since 1981.

A lot of Internet message board comments and even a few missives from media members suggest the Bengals could fix their attendance issues by, well, winning.

Though there's some truth to that, it's an oversimplification of the issue.

In order for the Bengals to win consistently, there will have to either be a shift in ownership philosophy or a shift in ownership, period.

Brown, the Bengals owner, isn't necessarily nefarious, but he is getting by on the cheap -- the Bengals had $29 million in cap space just sitting there shortly before the season started, with $11.5 million or so set aside in case Carson Palmer gets tired of pouting on his couch in California (not likely).

Brown appears to be content with contending for a division title every few years and otherwise profiting from longtime Bengals fans who just can't seem to break the habit despite so many years of bad football.

A crash course on Brown's apparent personnel formula:

1. Acquire players as cheaply as possible, preferably the undervalued ones.

2. Watch some of them blossom into serviceable NFL players, or even stars.

3. Let the elite ones leave in free agency because you won't pay them enough to keep them around, such as star cornerback Johnathan Joseph (or, unbelievably, refuse to trade them and get something in return, even when it's blatantly obvious they have no intention of playing in a Bengals uniform, a la Palmer).

4. Repeat annually and hope you strike gold every few years, like with Cincinnati's 2005 and 2009 division titles.

In the interest of fairness, it should be pointed out the Bengals extended the contracts of blind-side tackle Andrew Whitworth and new top cornerback Leon Hall before the season, after Joseph's departure for greener pastures -- at least in his pocketbook -- with the Texans. And they did pay Palmer and former headache-du-jour Chad Ochocinco well.

Those, however, are the exceptions. And despite those, the Bengals consistently hover well under the salary cap.

Meanwhile, it costs an average family of four $401.15 to attend a Bengals game, according to Team Marketing Report (below the NFL average but still pricey).

$401.15 to watch a bad football team whose owner seems more concerned with acquiring and preserving windfall than with winning consistently, which would require spending some of that dough.

Throw the exorbitant cost of apparel into the mix, and you practically have to take out a second mortgage -- or sell a kidney -- to support the team.

Bengals fans, which have to be considered among the most loyal (and possibly insane) in the league since they've continued to support a losing product for so many years, want to see wins. Those division titles in 2005 and 2009 gave some hope to Cincinnati fans.

The best way to show Brown you'd like to see the Bengals win some more of those is to keep your money in your pocket and out of his.

Judging by the picture it was taken during National Anthem.

Sure some filed in afterward. It was bad and that picture is an adequate representation of the crowd.

I agree with the idea.....don't show up and hurt Brown where it counts the most...his wallet. But the thing is, he won't change, so really you are just hurting the players and their will. The players from the bigger programs are used to playing in crowds close to 100k, then they come to the Bengals and play in front of 40k, that has to take some wind out of your sails and over time will change their perception of the team.

Good point wrapped in crap.

1. NFL system handicaps Mike Brown. It allows him to acheive the minor success that he does.

2. Attending NFL football isn't living off families of 4. It's corporate money, expense accounts etc.

3. NFL football is easy. Twice a month August through December.

It's like people live in a hole. This past Summer all you heard was how to split a 9 billion dollar pie. Do people really think "Family of Four" is really driving the 9 billion? Somewhere along the lines of the NFL life cycle the ownership group made right moves to drive TV and all the other goodies.

Yes, the guy who sang the National Anthem is standing out by his mic on the field. It is an adequate representation of the crowd on the visitor's side of the stadium but not on the Bengal's side. All the club seats and the stands on the Bengal's side were fairly full. Some time in the 3rd quarter and definitely by the 4th quarter they were emptying out.

I am thinking back to 2009 with the amount of close games won in the end and people filed out then too only to try and scurry back to their seats when the Bengals came back to win. This game was that close and could have still been won right up to the bitter end (interception). People filed out well before the game was decided.
...get his rocks off polishing Mike Brown's knob like he does.
This individual has a man crush on Oldschooler. Too funny he feels offended by your optimism but still names himself Oldschoolerfan... Kinda like Homer naming himself GeorgeBushFan...

Yeah, I was there and that pic was pretty representative of the crowd.

Also, that was the worst pregame I have seen in years from the Bengals.

1. The bomber was cool , but is nothing compared to the ground shaking a three jet fly over creates... Lame

2. No highlight video with adrenaline pumping music... Lame

3. No pyrotechnics when the players run out and the song they ran out to is gay as hell... Lame

I can't remember a more uninspiring start to a game...

Sidenote: The video stuff with the tiger is a good concept, but it needs updated with better graphics and a tiger that does not look anorexic...

That is actually the picture that Joe Reedy tweeted and said was 5 minutes prior to kickoff. I remember getting the tweet and opening the picture and not believing how empty the upper deck and club level were. Damn place looked like a ghost-town, in terms of professional sports venues on a game day.
