HOUSTON -- Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown declined comment Tuesday about whether the team has plans to trade quarterback Carson Palmer before next week's trade deadline.

"I don't have a thing to say about that," Brown said while attending the NFL Fall Meeting, adding that he doesn't like to comment on football matters.

Palmer is currently out of football, holding true to his pledge to retire if he isn't traded. Brown hasn't given in to Palmer's demand and said in the preseason that the Bengals consider Palmer to be retired.

The Bengals retain Palmer's rights since he is under contract, meaning he can't play for another team unless he is traded or released.
The NFL's trade deadline is Tuesday, Oct.18.

In Palmer's absence, the Bengals are off to a 3-2 start behind rookie quarterback Andy Dalton, who has led the team to fourth-quarter comeback wins in each of the last two weeks against the Bills and Jaguars. He has thrown for 1,047 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions.

Mike Brown mum on possible Carson Palmer trade

The NFL’s annual trading deadline comes in a week. With the Bengals at 3-2 and rookie quarterback Andy Daltonplaying very well, owner Mike Brown could be tempted to move quarterback Carson Palmer.

If Brown is, he isn’t saying.

“I don’t have a thing to say about that,” Brown said at the ownership meetings in Houston, according to Steve Wyche of NFL.com. Per Wyche, Brown also said he doesn’t like to comment on football matters.

Of course, that policy didn’t stop Brown from commenting strongly on Palmer’s status after the lockout ended.

As explained in our Week Five 10-pack, there’s no reason to trade Palmer within the next week, since the Bengals could get more by launching an auction for Palmer in the offseason. With the Bengals likely to get one or more 2012 draft picks if the trade happens now or later, why not wait until later?

There’s also a chance that the Bengals could get an even better package for Palmer if a team that needs a quarterback can’t get the quarterback the team wants via free agency or the draft.

Of course, if Brown waits there is always the possibility that after sitting on the couch or basking in the sun for a year CP might just decide he likes this retirement thing and then Mike gets nothing but the memory of paying him the millions that made it all possible.

Possibly. I am in the "TRADE HIM NOW!" camp. His value isn't going to go up the longer his 30 year old ass sits out of football. I will say this again in all seriousness: why in the fuck can we not trade him straight up for a starting player rather than a draft pick? Lets get a top guard, or a starting safety or SOMETHING for him! What is the advantage for the team in not moving him? Can someone explain that to me?

IMO his value will be higher in April than it is now. Any team that would want/need him at this point is already out of the playoff hunt. They aren't going to shell out for him now. They will in April though so that he's ready for 2012. Hope springs eternal.

There is always a market for starting quarterbacks. It's tough to call Palmer's value now or in the future, but the demand will always be there. Look at what unproven players like Matt Schaub (two 2nd round picks), Matt Cassel (2nd round pick), and Kevin Kolb (2nd round pick, Rodgers-Cromartie) fetched in trades. Even washed up quarterbacks like McNabb have some value (two 6th round picks). With Palmer turning 32 next year and sitting for a year, it's hard to judge what kind of value he'd bring in a trade. Maybe the year off might be interpreted as a good thing, saving his body and giving it an extended period to heal. I think teams would rather get him with a whole off-season to work. Expecting to trade for him mid-season and for Palmer to immediately jump into the starting lineup is a little unrealistic.

I agree with this. The best case would have been to trade him before the season. We might have been able to get a 1st rounder from Miami or Seattle.

But once that opportunity passed, the offseason became our best chance to get a good return. For teams like Miami who may need a QB right now, it makes much more sense for them to stay in the race for Andrew Luck than give up anything significant for Carson. After the season, one of the teams who doesn't get Luck may feel that Carson makes more sense for a 2nd rounder than a rookie in the 1st.

I think the most similar recent trade was when Philly traded McNabb to the Redskins. They got an early 2nd and a future 3rd or 4th. I'd be happy with that type of haul.

No offense Old, but haven't there been enough "Are the Bengals going to trade Carson" articles/threads?
One of biggest stories of this franchise is the Carson Palmer story.

You're tired of threads about it?

What about all of the douchy threads about nicknames?

What about all of the lame ass threads questioning people's "fandom" if they doubt Dalton's ability?

Keep posting Old.

while this is a joke, I did see a tweet today that some NBA players are seeking work in the NFL.
Haha yeah I read similar tweets and that's why I was thinking of it. I think the NBA/NFL transition would be very tough though. They can't just flail their arms when touched
