9 picks in first 3 rounds of next 2 drafts.

Recommended Posts

If the rules regarding compensatory draft picks have not changed we should get a 3rd rounder for losing Joseph.

And even though the '13 pick in the Palmer deal is called a "conditional" first rounder it is guaranteed to be no lower than a 2rd.

That means we could be looking at 5 picks in the first three rounds of the '12 draft and 4 in the first three rounds of the '13 draft.

Now we just need Mike to bundle up those late round picks we got for Chad with some other stuff to get a couple of more third rounders.

To me it seems like there is a big drop off in production after the third round.

Don't forget, they have to qualify in the compensation plan. I don't remember any of the FAs being high priced ATM, so it's quite likely that none of them will qualify when they compute the compensatory picks.

I have no idea. I know salary counts, but so does production. Clements, Howard, and Lawson are all starting and they will eran about $9 million this year. Joseph got $48 million over 5 years, but almost $19 million this year (including the $12 million signing bonus).

i was thinking that we had lost a lot more free agents, but T.O., Ocho, and Carson don't count.

We should get a 3rd or 4th for Joseph.

The comp stuff is based almost entirely on salary. He got close to 10 million a year on a long term deal..

The only way that would be offset is if we signed a single player for near that amount. They don't add up 3 players each making 3 million to cancel that out. That's not how it works.

We actually do pretty well with our late rounders - Scott, Fanene, Huber, Chinny, Peko

First three you sort of pencil in as starter, late ones are projects that may take time to pan out, if they do.

We've been killing it with the mid rounds picks on the D line. Michael Johnson, Geno Atkins, Pat Sims, Domata Peko, Frostee Rucker, Robert Geathers, Jon Fanene, Dunlap was a mid-2nd...that's pretty much the entire D line which has been outstanding. Not a single 1st rounder or FA in the bunch.

Assuming the Bengals do have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, I'd add a CB, a S, a RB, and 2 OL.

Interesting tidbit... it's reported that two teams are showing interest in obtaining Forte of the Bears...

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/10/18/matt-forte-if-the-bears-wont-pay-me-another-team-will/

I'd like to see him in Bengal stripes, and after what has transpired with Palmer today... I can't say that anything is impossible any more.

Improbable yes, but not impossible.

The reason Forte wants out of Chicago is because he wants to get paid top dollar. So he isn't coming here. Mike Brown hasn't changed THAT much.

I think the FIRST consideration is strictly if the team has lost more qualifying free agents than they signed.

From Wikipedia, so take it for what it's worth (but does align with what I recall):
In addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as "compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.

If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections").

Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft.
I just wish there was an quick/easy way to determine how many qualifying FAs the Bengals lost and signed.

Clements' contract was terminated in San Fran so signing him doesn't count. Lawson, Howard, and Jean-Gilles are players the Bengals signed who played out their contract with their previous team. Lutui doesn't count. Bengals lost Joseph and Mathis in free agency. I think the signing of Jean-Gilles will keep us from getting a comp pick unless there's somebody else from last year who signs elsewhere. It's too late to count TO even if he does sign somewhere this season.

I was reading a story on the trade, but they had a list of Players the Raiders might get a comp pick for, and Howard was not listed. Could be space, but?

The next two years is Mike Brown's chance at redemption, he's been labeled the worst owner/gm in the history of pro sports but now he has a chance to put his franchise in a position to be an elite team for years to come. Since Marvin joined the Bengals we have drafted pretty well, recently we are one of the best teams in the NFL when it comes to drafting players who start for their team. If Marvin and Mike can continue to make good decisions on draft day I think the Bengals will go from a laughing stock to an elite franchise in a few years.

I was thinking of the Herschel Walker Trade. I hope it turns out the same, however I hope Carson does well and the Bengals make the team better with great drafting. It would be nice to get the value the Cowboys did in this trade. I remain hopeful.
