Hmm. Volquez is pretty average, but the other three guys, Alonso especially, had something to give. Sure if Latos is a genuine #1 then it's a good trade. If he's even slightly dodgy, or heaven forbid the second coming of Milton, then ugh. Sad to see Willis go too.
yea I liked Willis too, but there wasn't much room for him. Wasn't any room really.

Still don't get why they are trying to make Chapman a starter, especially since they just traded for one.

Was on the road to St. Louis so I missed the trade going down but not a huge fan of it. Gave up way to much for a guy that was 9-14 last year in a pitchers ballpark. I know his ERA is good but heck Harang had a good ERA for the Padres.

I would think with everything they gave up, they could have got a more proven pitcher like Shields or Jurrjens. I hope it works though and Latos turns out to be a true number one but right now the Padres trade raped the Reds.

I would take Latos over shields or jurrjens any day of the weak. We have him under control till 2016 and only have to pay him like 500k this year. Hes also 24 and should keep getting better. Win loss record means nothing when you play for a team that averaged like 2 runs a game.

Latos career ERA is 2.96 on the road. 3.20 at Petco. So he isn't a product of the park. [s]#[/s]redsI

Not sure where he is getting that road ERA number. Every site I look at his road ERA is slightly higher than his home ERA.

These are his stats in games the Pads lost:

7 IP 3 R
7 IP 2 R
6 IP 4 R
6 IP 3 R
7 IP 2 R
7 IP 1 R
6 IP 3 R
7 IP 3 R
7.1 IP 1 R
6 IP 3 R
5.1 IP 4 R
6 IP 2 R
6 IP 4 R
5.2 IP 4 R
5 IP 1 ER
4.1 IP 3 R
6.1 IP 5 R
6 IP 4 R

In 12 of them he had a quality start. If he puts up those numbers with the reds offense he probably wins 17-20 games.

If those stats are chronological it looks like he wore down significantly as the year went on

A couple things...those were just games he pitched in that they lost. Doesnt include any of his wins.

Second, the kid is still 24. He is probably still getting fully stretched out. Wearing down as the year goes on for young pitchers is common.
The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds are close on a deal that would send reliever Sean Marshallto Cincinnati in exchange for left-handed pitcher Travis Wood and two minor leaguers, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Wood, who turns 25 in February, was 6-6 with 4.84 ERA in 18 starts last season with the Reds. Wood beat the Cubs in his major league debut on July 1, 2010, allowing two runs on two hits in seven innings. He finished his rookie season 5-4 with a 3.51 ERA in 17 starts. Wood was the second overall pick of the 2005 draft.

Wood pitched 10 games at Triple-A Louisville last season, going 2-3 with a 5.33 ERA.

Marshall, 29, is one of the best left-handed relievers in baseball. Last season he went 6-6 with 2.20 ERA and had 34 holds, tied for second in the majors among left-handed relievers. That was also a single-season team record.
Marshall is set to make $3 million in 2012, and he will be a free agent after the season.
That's like Matt Millen dissing someone else's draft pick.

But yeah, hate the this trade, particularly giving up on Wood so soon...
