How did OSU end up in the Gator Bowl?

They were the 8th best team in the Big ten per record.
[sup]I know why the Gator bowl would want them, but I am confused why they were allowed to take them. I am sure it was addressed somewhere. [/sup]

Bowl selection procedures
Although the pick order usually corresponds to the conference standings, the bowls are not required to make their choices strictly according to the won-lost records; many factors influence bowl selections, including pre-season rankings, especially the turnout of the fans for past bowl games. Picks are made after BCS selections; the bowl with the #2 pick will have the first pick of the remaining teams in the conference.
The Capital One, Outback, and Gator Bowls can select any eligible team except a team that has two fewer wins or two more losses than another eligible team. The Insight, TicketCity, Texas and Little Caesar's Pizza Bowls have no such restrictions, However, the bowls cannot select a 6–6 team if a 7–5 or better team is not selected by a Big Ten-affiliated bowl.[sup][54][/sup][sup][55][/sup]

Penn State is tainted (right or wrong that's just how it is) and Nebraska draws better than Michigan State.

And OSU travels as well or better than any team in America. It's all about the $$$.

The fact that it irritates you is just a bonus...

I know why they were chosen. But based on the rules it looks like they were not allowed to be chosen.

Again, you're complaining about a system that is intrinsically flawed...

The bowl selection is all about which teams fans will travel and fill up the stadium and nothing else. It's the exact reason Va Tech and Michigan got picked for the Sugar Bowl.

Teams that have a better traveling fan base will get the better bowls. It's not really fair but it's all about the money.

I totally get the money thing. But based off the rules the Insight and Gator bowl had to take Penn State and did not.

"The Capital One, Outback, and Gator Bowls can select any eligible team except a team that has two fewer wins or two more losses than another eligible team." That would be OSU or Iowa in comparison to Penn State

I was gonna say... they're not rules, more like guidelines.

After the BCS championship game... it is all about conference affiliations and money. Period.

Florida bowls are notorious for taking Florida (with a lesser record) than several other SEC schools for no other reason than they'll sell the tickets because it is close. I've seen it where Florida was 3 games worse... The conferences don't even fight for the schools to be slotted according to conference record. They just try to get as many bowl tie-ins as possible (READ: guaranteed money to the conference) and then leave it to the schools and bowls to negotiate...

Interesting that Luke Fickell and Woody Hayes' last games as head coach will both be in the Gator Bowl.

And that the coach that follows Luke worked under the coach that followed Woody.

Let's hope this one has a better ending.
