Also will mark the first time in Williams eight seasons here that he has missed games due to a football injury [s]#[/s]bengals

I kind of had a feeling that might happen the way he was walking on it yesterday.

Love Bobbie, but he really needs to be replaced.

Wonder how long he holds out hope for next year before retiring. I imagine he'll do the rehab with the team, and then retire unless he's in good enough shape to sign another 1 year deal. He's getting long in the tooth for his position, so it's bound to happen sooner rather than later.

Right guard Bobbie Williams, who has been a staple of the Bengals’ offensive line since he signed with the team in 2004, was placed on injured reserve after he broke his right ankle during the first half of Sunday’s 20-19 loss to Houston.

In Williams eight seasons with the Bengals, this will mark the first time he will miss games due to a football-related injury. He missed three games in 2006 due to rehab from an appendectomy he underwent and then was out for four games this year as he served a four-game suspension due to a violation of the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substances when he took a diuretic.

Williams has started all 118 games at right guard that he has played with the Bengals. Mike McGlynn, who the Bengals got on waivers from Philadelphia before the season started, is the favorite to take over the position. The fourth-year player saw extensive time in the San Francisco game and then started the Buffalo game in place of Clint Boling, who struggled. Boling, who was drafted in the fourth round this season, started the first three games but has been inactive for the last nine.

Looking ahead, Williams is in the final year of his two-year contract. Left guard Nate Livings also becomes an unrestricted free agent. McGlynn will also be a free agent. So needless to say, guard will be at the top of the Bengals offseason priority list in free agency and the draft.

To fill Williams spot, the Bengals have signed OG Otis Hudson from the practice squad. Hudson (6-5, 311; Eastern Illinois) was on the roster for the first four games this season, but was inactive each week, due in part to a knee injury suffered in preseason. He was waived Oct. 6 and had been on the practice squad since Oct. 7. A fifth-round Bengals draft choice in 2010, he spent his rookie season on the practice squad.

Bengals take another hit

Cincinnati’s loss to the Texans on Sunday may prove to be the decisive one in the Bengals’ season.

If the Bengals had just held on to a nine-point fourth quarter lead, it was easy to imagine a path to the playoffs for Cincinnati. The Bengals face the Rams and then host the Cardinals and Ravens to wrap up the season.

Cincinnati probably needs ten wins to get in to the playoffs, which leaves them no margin for error now.

To make matters worse, the team lost one of its best players Sunday. The team placed guard Bobbie Williams on injured reserve Monday after he fractured his ankle against the Texans. The team signed guard Otis Hudson to take Williams’ place. Williams hadn’t missed a game due to injury in eight years and is one of the most underrated linemen in the league.

No one expected the Bengals to be in a playoff race, and now no one will expect them to get to the postseason. They’ll need to win three straight and get some help.

One of the toughest and most durable Bengals of his generation couldn’t survive a broken right ankle and for the first time in his 12 NFL seasons right guard Bobbie Williams went on season-ending injured reserve Monday.

At age 35 and in the last year of his deal, there is speculation that Williams has left the Paul Brown Stadium field for the last time. And if it is, how fitting. Even though he was hurting he walked into the locker room during the second quarter firing up the crowd with his ever sunny smile.

Ever since he arrived via free agency in 2004 from the Eagles, the 6-4 345-pound man mountain Williams has been such a rock in the locker room, they call him “Boss Man.” Always known as an excellent run blocker, Williams improved his pass blocking when he got to Cincinnati and was part of the ’05 and ’07 lines that set the club for fewest sacks allowed.

The only Bengals games Williams had missed before serving a four-game NFL suspension at the beginning of this season for violating the NFL’s policy on physical enhancers were three games during the 2006 season after an appendectomy. His 117 games with the Bengals have straddled perennial Pro Bowler Willie Anderson and first-rounder Andre Smith as his partners at right tackle. Williams was on the field for Carson Palmer’s first fourth-quarter comeback in 2004 and Andy Dalton’s second in 2011.

Williams, the only offensive player left from head coach Marvin Lewis’ first AFC North champs in 2005, had been a second-round pick of the Eagles in 2000. When the Bengals drafted Clint Boling in the fourth round this season and picked up four-year Eagles center Mike McGlynn off waivers just before the season, they appeared to be moving to youth at that spot.

McGlynn, who started at center for last season’s NFC East champions in Philadelphia, started ahead of Boling once he got comfortable with the offense and before Williams returned. It was McGlynn that replaced Williams on Sunday. They are also high on 2010 fifth-rounder Otis Hudson, the guard they drafted in the fifth round out of Eastern Illinois in 2010. They signed Hudson from the practice squad Monday.

Before Hudson hurt his knee early in training camp, offensive line coach Paul Alexander said he and Smith were his two most improved players.

Watching McGlynn yesterday, I thought he did rather well..coming in cold and all.

And fuck this snakebitten shit...every team has injuries this time of year.

x2. Plus, while there's a step down likely to his backups, Bobbie wasn't exactly a stellar player anymore. He was more valuable as a leader than a guard at this stage in his career. He's been a very average guard for 2-3 years now.

Teams like Chicago have much more to complain about in terms of injuries, losing Cutler and Forte, or the Texas who have missed Foster, and Johnson for chunks of the season, and lost Schaub for the year. I'd say we've been pretty fortunate to keep most of our key guys fairly healthy for the most part.

Interesting discussion yesterday at our tailgate about the Bengals best free agent pick up EVER and the
general concensus of opinion was Bobby Williams. Hands down.

I see retirement in his immediate future.

Good guy and excellent and underrated player.
He will be as missed in the locker room as on the field and this team
sorely needs veteran leadership.
