Bengals FA Interest and Dealings

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure how he is supposed to help. We are already pretty long in the tooth back there and have 3 quality starters locked up. Unless he's coming to play for vet minimum and can play special teams, I don't see it happening. A fourth corner almost has to play ST's doesn't he?

After the Livings signing, who are they to laugh? Anyway, if Zim thinks Newman still has gas left and can help, I'm okay with it. He won't cost much, and there's no risk at all.

He got way more than I expected out of Roy Williams.

ONGOING TALKS:

Indications were Tuesday night that the Bengals were talking to the free agents that are coming off Paul Brown Stadium visits, including Raiders running back Michael Bush.

The Bengals are also talking to their own free agents, such as cornerback Adam Jones, and it's believed he's received interest from two other teams as well as Cincinnati.

The talks revolving around Bush aren't so clear cut, since the position involves system, fit, and when computing the financial value of a deal. NFL.com is reporting that the Bengals are one of four teams looking at Bush and Seattle wants a visit. He visited Chicago, where he would be behind Matt Forte and he would back up Marshawn Lynch in Seattle.

Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden has made it clear they're looking at rotation, so while Bush wouldn't be backing up, he would be splitting time with a rookie or veteran Bernard Scott, or both. How he feels about that and what price tag a team would put on that would be all part of fairly in-depth discussions.

Whatever is going on in the running back market, it is slow across the league. That's because teams are trying to figure out how much they'll spend knowing that they'll be wading in a deep pool of running backs next month in the draft.

One position that's gone under the radar has been SAM linebacker, but that bubbled up Tuesday night when new Titan Kamerion Wimbley told Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com on Sirius Radio that the Bengals were one of five teams that expressed interest in him, along with Tennessee, the Patriots, Seahawks, and Packers. But Wimbley jumped on the $35 million deal with $13.5 million guaranteed and $11.5 million in the first season (as reported by Adam Caplan via ProFootballTalk.com) before leaving Nashville and making other visits.

Manny Lawson, the Bengals' incumbent SAM, is a highly-rated free agent that strangely hasn't received much play. Until Tuesday night when reports surfaced the Packers were interested. Lawson arrived in Cincinnati last season with a good rep as a pass rusher, but he rushed just 46 times in 2011 and dropped in coverage three times as much, according to profootball.focus.com. But he's an athletic big body and solid locker room guy and it's believed he's also had discussions about staying in Cincinnati.

Bumped because I like this list as an easy reference. :) Any updates?

and how does Kyle Britten know this?

He's not a "journalist" with any connections, just a fan. He's probably the Pats equivalent of that Brian P guy who makes up all types of shit, hoping some of it comes true so he can say "I told ya so".

I can't see why we would want lawfirm on the squad, he's basically the same player as Benard Scott.

I bet they liked his price tag better.
lol Yeah most likely. Hope this deal gets done and the contract numbers arent too bad. I think this is a sign we are shifting away from flat footed bruiser rb's. almost ensures that we pick up a back in the draft IMO

he's just reiterating what has been said elsewhere. That's just the first one I came across.

would you prefer the Patriots beat writer?

It reminds me more of Roy Williams who did nothing here, at least Clements has made some impact.

When healthy,Roy played pretty well for the Bengies. Clements played well and was durable. I'm down with Newmn if Zim,ML and Coach Carrier are. Frankly, I don't get why so many people are so dead set against bringing in Newman. And don't tell me he's too old or slow or washed-up because no one on this board (even though it is hands down the best Bengals board) really knows what he's talking about.

Newman's 2011 opposing QB rating 88.5%. 4 INT's. 0 Sacks. 8 PDef. 53 tackles. Played injured most of the season. (will be 34 this season)
Pacman's 2011 opposing QB rating 95.1%. 0 INT's 0 Sacks. 6 PDef. 28 tackles. Injured most of the season. (will be 29 this season. soon to be suspended again)
