That's an interesting take.. I thought we won the division that year. And the cards beat us in that series but went on to tank down the stretch. You make it sound like Brandon was responsible for spring boarding them to a world series.

I can't blame the guy for trying to step up and fire up the team.. One of the problems with the club has been a lack of leadership among the players, and someone had to try and fill that role. Maybe he isn't really that guy, but at least he tried.. And he was right, the cardinals are a bunch of bitches, and Larussa was one of the biggest whiners in baseball. It was great that someone finally called them on their bullshit.

yea the reds ended up winning the division, but the cards went on a monster tear after BP's comments. Something like 30-12.

I'm not saying he shouldn't fire up the team, but he doesn't need to do it publicly. Keep that stuff in-house.

Not a big fan of talking trash before you do something. Go out and kick someone's ass, then talk trash about them.

Wow, we must have gone on an even bigger tear then because we won the division by five games and after that series we were down 1. Regardless of how you slice it we won the division and they got to watch the post season from home, which means we got the better of them.. Baseball isn't about a handfull of games. It's a marathon. Maybe Brandon's comments didn't help, or maybe they did.. You have no idea what the mentality of the team was at the time or after. Maybe they needed a kick in the ass and he was trying to do that? Dusty sure isn't the type to get guys fired up..

It just seems he gets a lot of shit for that when in reality we won and went to the playoffs for the first time in a decade.. That's what matters.

I love Brandon Phillips more than I could ever love Cole Hamels.
Hell, right now I don't love Hamels at all.

I hope they wrap BP up for a long time.

Walt Jocketty: Extension for Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips 'close'

The Reds hope to nail down a contract extension for Brandon Phillips soon, with speculation growing about what the team is offering its All-Star second baseman.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said the team is confident about getting a deal completed.

“We’re close,” Jocketty said Thursday. “I hope to have it done within the next week or so.”

Phillips is staying mum. When a group of reporters approached Phillips after the 4-0 Reds win over Miami, Phillips said: “The game is all I’ll talk about.”

Former Reds general manager Jim Bowden, now an analyst for ESPN, tweeted Thursday that according to a Reds source, the team has offered Phillips a five-year contract in the “neighborhood” of $62.5 to $65 million.

Jim Duquette, another former general manager (New York Mets) and now with MLB Network Radio, earlier tweeted:

“Am hearing the @Reds are offering 4 years to B Phillips. With (Ian) Kinsler likely to get 6 yrs from Texas, Phillips can’t sign for less than 5.”

Phillips, 30, is playing out the $12.5 million option year on his contract. He can become a free agent after the season.

With first baseman Joey Votto having signed a 10-year, $225 million contract extension on Wednesday, the question is whether the Reds can budget enough to please Phillips.

Phillips is a two-time National League All-Star (2010, 2011) and has won three Gold Glove awards in the past four years. Phillips in 2011 also won his first Silver Slugger award.

Thursday, Phillips got the Reds rolling offensively when he walked to start the game. Zack Cozart then grounded into a fielder’s choice that erased Phillips, but Cozart eventually scored the Reds’ first run on a sacrifice fly by Jay Bruce.

Overall, Phillips went 1-for-4 with a walk and a single.

“Any day you win a game it’s a beautiful day,” Phillips said. “Opening Day here, it’s probably one of the best things in the world. I’m just so blessed to have the opportunity to be here on the field here in Cincinnati on Opening Day.

“I had Opening Days with the Indians and it’s nothing like this. The parades, all the crazy stuff I’ve been seeing on TV. It’s beautiful here, man. I think that Opening Day should be a holiday.”

I didn't want anyone to go anywhere. It was a rhetorical question meant for reflection.. And he may have lacked hustle at times to first, but that seems to have been a problem in general over the past couple of years.. Overall, I would say Brandon shows great effort.. And I don't get the whiny attitude thing.. He always seems to have a great attitude to me, and he is one of the most accessible and fan friendly players on the team and in recent memory.

i think people need to go there more often.... then again thats why i dont post much anymore.... you are correct on ALL accounts.

I met brandon a few times, and having not known me at all and basically just being a random stranger in the same place as him he was SUPER friendly and hilarious. He and his lady and my wife and I were the only 4 people in the movie "The Strangers", we have a conversation on how griffey said it was gonna be awesome and it sucked, etc..

not to mention he is a fantastic baseball player.

I wish you would man. I know we have had our tussles, but to be honest I always held you in high regard even when we don't agree.. I have always felt confident in engaging you in honest disagreement and trusted I would get an honest debate in response. I'm not saying this because you happen to run this site, but as a fellow fan and member here.. Your input and honesty is missed. I have always had respect for your tough skin and fairness in participating and running this forum. I don't think I am in the minority in wishing you participated more.

I appreciate that. Once the season rolls around, perhaps I can dig in more on the football side. My biggest qualms with the team and its short and long term future are huge boiling points with pretty much 99% of the board at this point. So I cant imagine too much positive to come from it. Its like a twilight zone for me. I feel like I am watching something different. I talk to a half dozen folks privately in PM's and such. Feel free to toss a discussion my way anytime.

Partially back on topic, its funny that moving away has made me more of a baseball fan. I have my mlbTV HD subscription so i can watch reds games at home on tv or at work on my ipad. Eager to see how this season goes. My boys are at that age where they love going to games, which makes it more fun as well, reds play here in july a few weeks after their birthday, cant wait to get some tickets and go.

I am also impressed they could possibly ink Votta AND phillips. i would have never dreamed it possible in a smalltown baseball market like cincy.

Ian Kinsler just signed for 5 years $75M with an option for a 6th year. Not sure if this helps or hurts the Reds with Phillips but looking at the numbers from the article Old posted it seems like they're relatively close. Although being $10M apart is a sizable gap.

I personally do not think Phillips is worth $15M a year, and he is a year older than Kinsler. I think the team is right on the money in that low $60M range and 5 years.

IMO too many years, but they got a good average value.

Very impressive to get Votto and Phillips extended. I would have guessed they were both gone.
