How many people can actually say they have seen both guys play...I would say not many. If you have seen both HIll and Jeffery play there is no way you can say Hill is better than Jeffery, I think the majority of people who replied on this thread are going off of combine results and unoffical "scouting reports".

Jeffery was the most dominant reciever in the SEC in 2010, he almost doubled Green's yardage(1,517-Jeffery 848-Green),the same year that AJ Green and Julio Jones both went in the top 10 of the 2011 draft. If Jeffery can out produce the two best wr prospects to come out in the past 5 years then how is not better than a guy who only caught 40 passes his whole career? Because of a 40 time? Or some unseen potential?

Jeffery will be the best WR to come out of this draft, by a long shot. The only question is do we want him on our team.

I've watched a lot of both. Jeffery is the more ready guy now, but Hill has the higher ceiling. Hill has his questions, but there's also questions about Jeffery's route running, work ethic, and conditioning. I have severe questions if he'll ever have the explosiveness to be a sharp route runner.

Saying Jeffery will be the best WR to come out of this draft is extremely pre-mature IMO.
The more I read of Cosell the more I like the Randle kid:
A big wide receiver who I believe can align on the outside and run the complete route tree is LSU’s Rueben Randle (6-3, 210). The more games I watch, the more I like Randle. He is smooth and athletic, with better acceleration off the ball than either Jeffery or Sanu. In some ways, he reminds me of the New York Giants’ Hakeem Nicks, who was not drafted until the 29th pick in the first round in 2009. Nicks was the fifth wide receiver selected that year (after Darrius Heyward-Bey, Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin and Percy Harvin), but he’s clearly been the most productive of the bunch. Where Nicks has been very effective — and I project Randle playing a similar role — is at “x iso”, the single receiver to one side of the formation. When you’re aligned at “x,” you must be able to win versus man coverage.

I'll admit Hill sounds like he could be boom or bust, but for what it's worth Gil Brandt and Cris Collinsworth both seem to love his potential and think he flaws are easily fixable in a year or two.

I think if you really want to see what Jeffery can do and what type of player he will be in the NFL, look at what he did to the SEC competiton in 2010. In 2011 he gained alot of weight to protect himself from injury, which was a huge mistake. He lost the weight after the season returned to his 2010 form. In 2010 Jeffery was the best wr in the nation and if he was draft eligible probably would've been taken before Green and Jones in the 2011 draft. Coming into the season he was considered the best wr prospect in the country, better than Blackmon and Floyd. Hill wasn't even in the conversation because he didn't deserve to be based on his play on the field. Check out some of these highlights of Jeffery http://fanvsfan.com/slideshows/south-carolina-football-my-favorite-alshon-jeffery-highlights?page=4.

Jeffery still avg over 15 yrds a catch on 49 reception, along with 8 TD's while dealing the Connor Shaw-Stephen Garcia debacle at qb last year, in what was his worst season in CFB. This kid is a pure playmaker, he may not have the best measurables but when he steps on the field the measurables don't matter as much as production.

If you rate 40 times over production on the field then you don't have a clue on what it takes to win a football game. The best wr's in NFL history don't have blazing 40 times or insane long jumps. Jerry Rice ran a 4.6 in the 40, Fitzgerald ran a 4.5...but these guys were productive in college and it carreid over to the pros.

I just don't get how everyone says Hill has a higher ceiing, is it because he's .10 of a second faster? Like I said if you every watched the two actually play the game, not compete in track and field events like the 40 yard dash and long jump, but actually play the game then it's no question who is the better of the two.

I think Jeffery is the best option in the short and long term for this team, especially in the WCO offense that we employ. Jeffery can routinely make tough catches and will demand a double team in the NFL. Getting Jeffery at #21 would be a steal.
TPM, I think Cosell say it best with the concerns on Jeffery.
What about Alshon Jeffery of South Carolina? He will be a polarizing player for many teams. Given his measurements — 6-foot-3, 216 pounds — he fits the Colston profile. Jeffery’s best attributes are his size and his hands. He has very strong hands with a wide catching radius. He has shown the ability to make contested catches both at the intermediate and deeper levels. Jeffery is a great example of a wide receiver whose 40-yard-dash time is irrelevant. He’s not vertically explosive. At his best, he’s a long strider with some build-up speed. He will not tilt coverage (i.e. force a safety to play over the top) or dictate double teams. The question then becomes: How is he best utilized in the NFL? Can he line up outside and win? Is he ultimately a Colston-type inside receiver who can effectively use his big body to maximum advantage against nickel backs, linebackers and safeties? The answer to that question will determine where he is drafted.
Certain things I like about him, certain things I don't. If our coaching staff feels he's right for our system, then I'll buy in. Seems like a guy that has to be utilized correctly.

Why would any team spend a 1st round pick on a guy who will take a year or two of development before he can help the team? The last HC that took a GT wr in the first round that needed to develop got fired at seasons end and Thomas was a much more developed prospect than Hill was coming out of college. You don't draft for potential in the first round, you need impact players who can help your team win from day 1 in the first round.
Here was Cosell briefly on Hill
Hill is an early entry JR who even the coaches that recruited him and coached him for the past 3 years have said that he came out to early and needs to develop his game more. If the coaches who recruited this kid and taught him for the past 3 yrs think he's raw and underdeveloped why take him in the first round? So even Cosell acknowledges that Hill's timed speed doesn't show up on tape and he ran go routes the majority of the time. That should tell you that this kid is a project, a 2nd round pick at best, who will take some years to develop his game.
Jeffrey's production in the SEC doesn't really mean a whole lot. It's all about projecting how they will play in the NFL. Hill came from a gimmicky run first and second offense where he still put up respectable numbers despite not seeing a quarter of the passes Jeffrey saw. Hill blows Jeffrey away in athletic ability. Hill is said to be intelligent, hard working and high character. Jeffrey has questions about his work ethic.

Hill's potential is much higher and there's an element of unknown because of the offense he came from. Hill has looked great running routes at his pro days and combine and I think teams are excited to see what he can do in a NFL style offense. Jeffrey is the safer pick but it's no surprise Hill is rated higher by everyone.

I don't think Jeffery compares to Colston, I think he's quicker and faster than Colston and has more big play potential than Colston. I think Jeffery compares to Andre Johnson, a big physical WR who can beat you deep or underneath. I don't get how these analyst say he's not explosive but he avg over 16 yards per catch on 183 catches in 3 years, along with 23 TD's. He's making some plays on the field, you don't put up over 1,500 yards receiving in the SEC without being an extremely athletic and explosive player.

Statically he had a better 3 year career than Julio Jones and AJ Green, who both spent 3 years in the same conference as Jeffery. Jeffery had more catches, yards, and a better ypc average than both Jones and Green, while tying Green with 23 TD's in the 3 years. From a physical standpoint he is currently listed at 6'3 and around 215 lbs and ran a 4.5/40 at his pro day. AJ Green is 6'4" 215 lbs and ran a 4.5/40 at the combine. How is one guy a slow fat guy who can't get separation but the other is the best wr ever. Jeffery has similar if not better production against the same competition as Green and has damn near identical measurables? What am I missing here.

yards per catch is overrated in this case. He's got a lot of jump balls that inflate his average, just like Hill.

Take the guy who is polished and has proven it on the field. It took years to get Simpson on the field so I don't see how this is even debatable. Raw talent is usually still raw for a reason.

Caldwell made a few big plays while he was here. But his hands were mediocre, and this team kept switching him around between outside and the slot. He never got a chance to settle into a role.

Here's an article from Clark Judge on Jeffery before the combine:
INDIANAPOLIS -- South Carolina wide receiver Alshon Jeffery showed up at this week’s NFL scouting combine weighing 216 pounds, and that was smart. Now Jeffery should get smart again and show people what he can do with that weight.
Which is run.

He’s undecided if he’ll do it Sunday, saying he won’t make that decision until he sits down with his agent sometime before then. But Alshon Jeffery doesn’t need advice. He should do what he came here to do, and that’s demonstrated in that he’s not the full-figured receiver depicted in that locker-room photo that made the rounds of the Internet last week.

He took the first step Friday when he showed up considerably under the 240-250 pounds he was rumored to weigh. Now he can take another by running the 4.5 40 he believes he can run.

Look, he’s not a top-10 pick, all 32 NFL teams are here and if he falls short of expectations he can always run again at his pro day. I mean, what is there to lose? Nothing, which is why Alshon Jeffery shouldn’t stop what he’s doing now ... and, yes, I mean that literally. With everyone here, show the league you’re the wide receiver you think you can be.

One look at the 6-foot-3 Jeffery tells people he’s not a guy eating his way down the draft board. In fact, at 216 he’s down 13 pounds from the weight at which he’s listed in the University of South Carolina media guide -- his lowest, he said, since high school.

Jeffery got there, he said, by eating more carefully and drinking a lot of water. All I know is that he looks like someone who might interest you if you’re sitting at the bottom of the first or top of the second round of this year’s draft.

"Right or wrong," said Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli, "this place [the NFL scouting combine] always hurts people and always helps people. Showing up like that probably helped him."

I’ll second that. But I want to know how much, and so do coaches, scouts and GMs who are here. It’s one thing to look faster. It’s another to be faster. No one questions Jeffery’s hands -- in fact, he claimed he has "the best hands" of any receiver in the draft -- but there are concerns about his conditioning and how it affects, or might affect, his speed.

That’s one reason Jeffery lost weight, and he said he believes it makes him faster. And he’s probably right. So let’s see how much.

"I just feel I’m more in shape and lighter," he said. "Now, I have to go out and prove myself."

Exactly. So run, Alshon, run.

At his best, Jeffery is a standout wide receiver who can dominate -- a guy with the size, hands and ability to make acrobatic, leaping catches that should intrigue NFL coaches. He once set single-season records at South Carolina for catches (86) and yards (1,517). And so his productivity dropped last season. But that wasn’t a product of a bad body; it was a product of bad quarterbacking -- that and an injury to star running back Marcus Lattimore that sidelined him the second half of the season.

Jeffery could be one of the top three of four wide receivers in this draft, and might -- just might -- make it into the first round. But he could use help, and he just got it by showing up in shape. Now, he needs to make the next move and prove what he can do -- and I’m not talking about catching the ball.

"Alshon Jeffery does not separate," the NFL Network’s Mike Mayock said recently. "What those guys run [at the combine] is important ... Big and fast is good. Big and slow is bad. Bottom line is that he’s got to run well."

So run already. It just seems that if that’s a concern, and it is, you want as many opportunities to demonstrate that you’re the receiver you insist you can be. Alshon Jeffery can do that here, and if all goes well, he doesn’t need to run again. He will have made his case.

But if all does not ... well, he can run again. Simple as that.

"I want to show people that I’m a hard worker, that I learn real fast and that I want to be one of the best players ever," said Jeffery.
So show them. Now.
Jeffery didn't run the 40 at the combine, he ran a 4.5/40 at his pro day.

COLUMBIA — South Carolina receiver Alshon Jeffery hopes he's finally put the criticisms aside and changed his fortunes for next month's NFL draft.

The slimmed down, sure-handed Jeffery had a solid 40-yard dash performance and was among the main attractions for NFL personnel attending the school's pro day on Wednesday.

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan was on hand to watch Jeffery and other standouts, including defensive end Melvin Ingram and cornerback Stephon Gilmore during the workout at South Carolina's stadium.

The throng of people, many with timers, gathered around as Jeffery stepped up to run the 40, something he didn't do at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. While Jeffery said he didn't hear his time, Twitter posts from scouting services pegged the lanky, 6-foot-3 wide-out in the 4.5-second range.

“I just tried to let everybody see what I've got,” Jeffery said. “I gave it my best shot.”

Jeffery's future looked set last summer. He was heading into camp off a record-setting season of 88 catches for 1,517 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was on the cover of Sports Illustrated's college football preview and the only questions seemed to be by how many receptions would he surpass his old mark.

Jeffery was a certain top-five draft pick if he chose to leave, according to several preseason mock drafts.

Instead, Jeffery never found the form or production from 2010. He played at a huskier 233 pounds and was not the offensive focal point as the Gamecocks struggled to pass downfield.

It didn't help when Stephen Garcia, South Carolina's starting quarterback, was kicked off the team midway through last season. Coach Steve Spurrier went to a more ground-oriented attack behind less-experienced sophomore quarterback Connor Shaw.

Jeffery was spectacular at times — he was the Capital One Bowl MVP for his 51-yard Hail Mary grab before halftime that swung momentum in the Gamecocks 30-13 win against Nebraska — but still ended the year with just over half the catches (49) and yards (762) of a season earlier.

Jeffery worked hard since declaring for the draft in January and weighed 213 at pro day. He also put on his trademark show of catching nearly everything thrown in his direction.

Garcia was back at Williams-Brice Stadium to pass to his former teammate — Garcia was the Gamecocks starter during Jeffery's breakout 2010 season — who made several nice grabs including one deep in the right corner of the end zone.

Jeffery got a big smile, a handshake and several words of praise from Ryan, whose team has the 16th pick overall in April's draft
I telling you this kid is the real deal, teaming him with AJ Green would make this offense unstoppable.

Ok, I've watched Jeffery for the past 3 years and I saw a guy who dominated his competition. His routes were good enough to out produce Green and Jeffery in 2010 and last year he still averaged over 15 ypc even though his starting qb got kicked off the team 5 games into the season and their starting rb got hurt in the 3rd game of the year, meaning opposing defense could focus all of the ability on stopping him.

Now if you try to watch Hill's game tape to see how he gets in and out of his breaks or how precise his route running his you will have like a 2 minute film session because he rarely if ever did any of that while he was at GT for 3 years. You will see Hill blocking his ass of, which is nice but we need more than a blocker, and you will see Hill running straight up the field against guys who played in the 4th best conference in CFB(the ACC isn't better than the SEC, Big 12, or Big 10).

One guy has done it against the best competition in CFB on a consistant basis. While another guy ran 1/10 of a second faster in a track and field competition but doesn't have anywhere near the same level of production ON THE FIELD, YOU KNOW, WHERE THE GAME IS PLAYED!

Also, how can you say ypc is overrated when that's the only stat that Hill has that even remotely qualifies him for a first round pick? If not for Hill's ypc he wouldn't even be considered a draftable prospect, because 49 catches and 9 td's for a career doesn't equal first round talent. Btw, there are plenty of guys who run a fast 40 who don't get drafted in the first round. Hell Michael Calvin from Cal ran a 4.32/40 and 42 catches for his career, why isn't he being considered a first round pick? He's 6'3 220 lbs just like Hill, whats the difference...ypc maybe.

If Hill can only run a go route and Dalton struggles the most with the deep ball, why would you draft him with the 21st pick? Jeffery can do it all, at a very high level. He's great on the short to intermediate routes, which is the bread and butter of the WCO, and he can get you big plays, dude averaged over 16 ypc.

not gonna lie, I didn't read much of this after the first paragraph.

How jeffery runs routes has nothing to do with comparing him to green and green's stats.

As for the Hill stuff, I'm not pimping him either.

You like Jeffery. Cool, but don't pretend like the guy doesn't have warts, and two big ones are his route running and his explosiveness. Like Hill, there's more to being a successful receiver then putting up big YAC because you can win jump balls downfield.

Hill's offical 40 time was a 4.36, here is a list of guys who ran a 4.36 or lower in the 40 yard dash at the combine since 1999. As you can see from the names on the list, having great/elite straight line speed doesn't guarantee you NFL success nor does it even guarantee you a roster spot.

Look at the names on this list, besides Wallace, Jackson, & Johnson the rest of these guys are scrubs. The jury is still out on Ford, Jones, and Knox, but after that it's clear that straightline speed doesn't equal NFL success.

I can't wait to see your reaction if we draft Hill. In fact, if you decided to quit the board over it that would be even better.
I think Hill is a very real possibility to us at 21 if the rumor is true that we want to add another vertical threat. Jeffrey I think goes sometime between 33 and before our 2nd round pick.

Really, you really want me to quit the board....you hurt my feelings....I thought we were bff's, why are you so mean to me alleycat?
What did I ever do to you?

Was it because I called out Mayock for being a blowhard asshat who loved JaMarcus Rusell and thought Cam Newton was not even in the top 20 guys who came out last year? Or because I think that anyone who thinks that Stephen Hill is a better player than Alshon Jeffery doesn't know what the hell they're talking about?

Either way it's my opinion, why does my opinion bother you so much? Maybe you secretly value my opinion but when it doesn't mesh with your's you get confused and angry, so you lash out at me?

I dunno, all I know is your mean words cut like a knife through my fragile pysche, in the immortal words of Bobbie Brown "Don't be cruel... I would never be that cruel to yoouuuuu!!!"
LOL, just like a bully. You get popped in the nose once and you go crying to mommy that "it's just not fair!!!!"

Ok three things...1. My previous post was sarcasm, I really don't care if you want me to leave board nor do I give a fuck how you feel about me. 2. When did you pop me in the nose, my nose feels fine, and 3. How am I a bully?

Why are you so threatened by my opinions, are you the cheif of the thought police or something? Is it because I disagree with the majority of future NFL GM's(again, sarcasm) who want to take Stephen Hill at #21?
2012 NFL Draft: Wide Receiver Michael Floyd Unimpressive In Interviews, Per Report

Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd has been a popular pick for the Cincinnati Bengals, especially lately. Yesterday, Joe Reedy had Floyd, widely regarded as the second-best receiver in this year's draft class, going to the Bengals at No. 17. The selection makes sense, consider Cincinnati is in need of a No. 2 receiver opposite of A.J. Green. However one reason Floyd may still be available at No. 17 (or maybe even No. 21), however, is due to character concerns among NFL front offices.

NFL Network's Mike Lombardi does not include Floyd in his top-20 prospects due to poor interviews and off the field issues

"I've heard so many conflicting reports on his off-the-field activities," Lombardi said. "I've heard from reliable people in the league that he wasn't that impressive in his interviews."

Michael Floyd was a bonafide star on the field at Notre Dame, posting 100 receptions, 1,147 yards receiving and nine touchdowns last year.
However off-the-field issues were a legitimate concern. During the offseason leading up to his final season with Notre Dame, Floyd was arrested for drunk driving and subsequently suspended from the team for four months. While he didn't miss any games, he significantly risked his reputation, and should teams be weary of Floyd's character following the incident, he may again feel those consequences on draft day.

Floyd wouldn't have likely been considered a possibility at No. 17 or No. 21 if these character issues did not exist, so this most recent news regarding his poor interviews should not affect his place on Cincinnati's Big Board. But then again, the Bengals have taken chances on players with far deeper criminal histories than one DUI (see: PacMan Jones; Cedric Benson). If Mike Brown, Marvin Lewis, and the rest of the Bengals' front office were high on Floyd before this report, then they probably remain so.

Jeffrey is the safer pick but it's no surprise Hill is rated higher by everyone.

if hill's is so high character, why is he getting knocked for the bad crowd of hanger ons that he can't seem to shed? something's not lining up there. that certainly sounds like he's running with the wrong group of people, doesn't it?
