the best part of kirkpatrick is his level of preparation. if nick saban is has a forte, it's getting his DBs ready for the NFL. he understands the position, being both a former DB himself along with his coaching career starting in this area. plain and simple, his DBs are as well prepared for the next level as any in the college ranks. kirkpatrick may have his limitations, but we'll just need to keep him in situations where those issues get minimized.

Sounds a lot like Hall.

We won't take Jenkins unless we really think Hall isn't close to 100%. I still don't see him as a viable pick after using a 1 on Dre.

Jenkins is probably the best CB in the draft and was passed over in the first round. I think it speaks volumes. No coordinator was willing to take a chance on the guy even though many teams have a need at corner. Character did matter in this case.

Round 1 Transcripts

Posted 7 hours ago

MARVIN LEWIS

Initial comments:
“We feel really good about this first round. We came in here hoping to cover a couple of needs for the future in the first round. I think we’ve been able to do that in picking the cornerback and the interior offensive lineman.

“Dre Kirkpatrick is a guy that really played at a very high level. He’s a guy with good length — great length — has played a lot of bump-and-run and a lot of different, intricate schemes that they did at Alabama. He’s been a physical player and is a guy that’s played on special teams. He’s put in all three things — the passing game, the running game, and he’s contributed there on special teams. He has an opportunity to learn from some great veteran players to get him up and running as quick as we can.

“Kevin Zeitler comes out of that Wisconsin offensive line group, which as we know, has been outstanding year after year after year. The guy has versatility. We can use him to play guard and as a backup at center. He really has done a great job in the gap-blocking, zone-blocking and pulling — he’s done a lot of good things on film. He’s one of those guys that, when you put the tape on, he really stands out.

“We were able to slide back (trading the No. 21 pick to New England for Nos. 27 and 93). We obtained another pick and still were able choose between the same guys. We really feel where we were was good.”

Beside New England, were there any other inquiries about trades?
ML: “Yeah. People were interested in moving back and forth throughout the round today. You obviously saw a lot of movement up front. Even in the later picks, there are a lot of people that are interested in moving around. Maybe this one-night format is a good thing. Everybody’s fired up to do some things in the night.”

How much has the rookie salary cap enabled teams to do that?
ML: “We’ve always had the rookie pool, so I don’t think that’s really mattered. That gets determined by who you pick and choose. I don’t know that that affects it much.”

It seems like moving down to 27 was what you wanted, because you were able to still get who you wanted:
ML: “We were able to add another pick, which gives us a chance to add another player that competes to become a backup player on this football team. That’s a good thing.”

With all of the veteran corners already on this roster, can you still work Kirkpatrick in?
ML: “In both players, they have opportunities. If they’re good enough to start, they will. If they’re in their (learning) process as they go, they’ll have an opportunity to work their way into the lineup. But we drafted them to play, and I expect them both to be able to.”

Right away?
ML: “As soon as they’re ready.”

With the second pick, did you consider taking a skill guy? A receiver or running back?
ML: “We picked Kevin Zeitler.”

DEFENSIVE BACKS COACH MARK CARRIER

This is your first act as a coach on this staff, and your position group gets a first-round pick. You have to be pretty happy about that, right?
MC: “Definitely. Knowing that, looking at this draft, we highlighted only a couple of corners that we would have said ‘Hey (draft him),’ if we had a chance to get them. Dre was high on our list. It was getting to be nut-cracking time when it was coming to the pick. We didn’t know if he was going to be there for us. But he ended up being there for us, and we’re excited to have him.”

What do you like about Kirkpatrick?
MC: “One, where he comes from. He comes from a winning program. He played on the best team, on the best defense in college football. He has two national championships under his belt. He’s from a well-respected program. There were four first-rounders from this team (Alabama) — that tells you what type of team. If there’s anybody ready to make that next step, this kid obviously fits that mold.”

How much about Alabama’s scheme is similar to what you’re going to do here in Cincinnati?
MC: “One thing we know is that they pressed (played press coverage) a lot. With Coach Zim (defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer) and his scheme and what we want to do, we have a good rush group, and our objective is to give the guys up front a lot more time to get after the quarterback. You’ve got to put your corners on islands and do some things. They do a lot of that at Alabama. They’ve got guys that can get after the quarterback. But being able to get in their face and disrupt routes and timing and rhythm — that’s what Alabama does, and those are a lot of the things we like to do, too.”

Do you consider yourself fortunate to be able to work with so many first-round picks?
MC: “It all remains to be seen. It comes with pressure. It’s all about showing up and playing. In the short time I’ve been around them, these guys are all good professionals. They’re all very into this team and what’s best for the team, taking it to the next level and being competitive about it. Dre is just going to add to that.”

DRE KIRKPATRICK

What are your thoughts on being picked by the Bengals?
DK: “Oh man, I just feel great. It was a great pick and I’m happy that they chose me.”

How did your visit go here, and how was your meeting with Coach Zimmer and Mark Carrier?
DK: “It was great. They remind of the coaches at Alabama. Coach Zimmer reminds me of Coach Saban.”

How do you think you performed last season?
DK: “I think I did great. I didn’t get challenged as much as I’d like.”

What’s your biggest strength?
DK: “I can get the pass.”

What do you think you need to work on?
DK: “Sometimes I get a little excited and I lose focus. Coach Saban and I have worked on that.”

Did (the Bengals coaches) tell you about the cornerback situation when you visited?
DK: “No sir, they didn’t.”

How do you feel about being able to come in and learn from a host of first-round corners and safeties?
DK: “That’s an advantage that I have. Some guys come in and have to play with young guys. One of my main focuses is to go in and learn. Learn the system and learn from the veterans. I’ll learn a lot from those guys.”

How close was Alabama’s scheme to the scheme you’ll play here?
DK: “They do a lot of press and zone, and those are things we do at Alabama also.”

Your nickname is ‘Swagga’ — was that adopted or did someone give it to you?
DK: “The fans gave it to me. I mentioned it in a previous interview and they ran with it. It was something that the fans and I had going on.”

Dre Kirkpatrick, cornerback, Alabama (6-3, 192)

The Bengals had a need a corner and filled it with, in my view, the draft’s second best corner prospect. Kirkpatrick isn’t the most sudden/explosive athlete, but he’s a smooth coverman with the physicality to mature into a solid press corner. His bread and butter will always be as an zone/cover two type player. Add in the fact that he might be the draft's best tackling cornerback and you get a solid value at this stage.

NFL Ceiling: Top-tier zone corner

NFL Floor: Sean Smith (Dolphins) type corner

The Bengals have a lot of potential on their young offense and needed to go defense. They were 0-8 last year against teams that reached the playoffs and surrendered an average of 24.4 points in those games. Kirkpatrick was a shutdown corner rated on many boards as 1A behind No. 6 overall pick Morris Claiborne. Great potential for the Bengals with this pick.

DRAFT ANALYSIS:

Mayock's take: "They desperately need this young player. Keep in mind that Cincinnati has signed several defensive backs this offseason. They understand that this is an area of concern. They just got themselves the last true first-round cornerback of this draft. Mike Zimmer will get an awful lot out of this kid."

OVERVIEW

Kirkpatrick is an early-entry junior who started for three years in Alabama. He is a very lengthy corner. Kirkpatrick could also be moved and developed at safety, where some teams might see his length and ability to play in zone more transferable, and he wouldn't be a tackling liability despite his thin frame.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Athletes like Kirkpatrick are able to defy the perception that taller skill players don't have the footwork and agility that shorter players do. Kirkpatrick will thrive initially within a zone scheme, where he can use his burst and length to cover ground and remain active. He is so talented athletically that he could likely be tested early on an island in man coverage and excel, and he possesses the confidence and field presence necessary to take on such a task.

WEAKNESSES

Kirkpatrick has issues that surround all aspects of his prospects and overall value as he enters the draft. He is very thin and some will question his ability to play physically at the next level. Although he has always been advertised as a cornerback, his size and athletic ability could encourage a transition to safety. It remains to be seen if Kirkpatrick can add weight to compete at that position after three years at Alabama where his physical development was minimal.

I may have heard this wrong as I was doing a lot of different things last night, but I thought I heard mortenson say that kirkpatrick helped coach up the other guys in the alabama secondary, including barron.

I didn't like Carrier's response on Dre. He only referred to the success of the program that Dre played in and nothing about him individually. I'm pretty sure that they didn't draft him because they were national champs, but I would've liked to hear what he thought of Dre's skills.

Bengals get Dre Kirkpatrick with pick from Carson Palmer trade

Posted by Michael David Smith on April 26, 2012, 9:49 PM EDT

The Cincinnati Bengals have traded Carson Palmer for Dre Kirkpatrick.

With the 17th pick in the 2012 NFL draft, the pick the Bengals got from the Raiders when they traded Palmer last season, Cincinnati picked up Kirkpatrick, the Alabama cornerback who should be prepared to start in Cincinnati from Day One.

Cornerback is a definite position of need for the Bengals, so the choice is no surprise. The Bengals reached deals with Terence Newman, Pacman Jones and Jason Allen this offseason, but they’ll hope Kirkpatrick can beat them all out and be a starter in their defense.

Kirkpatrick was arrested for marijuana possession in January, which raised some concerns, but those charges were dismissed in February. The Bengals obviously weren’t too concerned, because he’s their top pick.

It will be a complete wate IMO if we draft a corner in the 3rd round or later, only Corner I'll be happy with us taking would be us taking Jenkins if he some how get's to us in the 3rd round, but i think we all know that's not happening.

I hope now we concentrate on WRrd 2, rb rd3, DL rd3, 4th rd a lB, 5th BPA on all 3. 6th whoever.

From ESPN Insider, they gave Kirkpatrick a Grade of 92 overall ....

Overall Football Traits

Production 2 "2009: (12/0) -- 8-0-0 2010: (13/13) -- 53-7-3 2011: (13/13) -- 30-9-0 "

Height-Weight-Speed 2 "Is a tall, long CB with a slightly lean frame but a muscular build and has room to add bulk if necessary. Possesses extremely short-arms considering frame (30 1/2) but possesses above-average hand size (9 1/2). Top-end speed appears to be slightly above average but not great for the position."

Durability 4 "Underwent left shoulder surgery after his senior season in high school. In fall camp 2009, was nagged by hamstring issues. In summer of 2010, he underwent another shoulder surgery. "

Intangibles 3 Arrived in Tuscaloosa in May of 2009 but was forced to return home to get his academics in order. He eventually was cleared by the NCAA and returned to camp in July of 2009. No off-the-field issues to our knowledge. Solid work ethic. Football intelligence is improving.

1 = Exceptional2 = Above average3 = Average4 = Below average5 = Marginal

Cornerback Specific Traits

Instincts/Recognition 2 "Shows good recognition skills in zone. Does a fine job of reading QB's eyes while maintaining proper leverage. Has a natural sense of surroundings and routes developing. Got picked on at times in 2010, but 2011 tape is much better in this regard. He no longer lets mistakes snowball. Has learned his limitations and playing much more within himself. Shows more confidence and plays with much more swagger. Biggest knock here is his lack of big-play instincts. He's the type that consistently gets in position to break up the pass or wrap up immediately after the catch, but not to make the play on the ball. "

Cover Skills 2 "Excellent size for cornerback position and shows good overall balance. Possesses adequate-to-good top-end speed but change-of-direction skills are below average. Shows a little bit of stiffness in his hips when asked to flip and run. At his best in zone coverage. Very good zone instincts. Shows closing burst when driving on the ball in front of him. Also can be effective in press-man. Did not play as much press as other techniques in college but flashes ability to reroute receivers'. Needs to be conscious of staying square and not opening the gate, but has the size and long arms to improve in this area. Most struggles occur when he's in off-man and forced to make sudden breaks or change direction. "

Ball Skills 4 Can be late getting head turned around and occasionally is late to find ball over his shoulder. Does not appear to have great leaping ability. Also will play body when he should be playing the ball.

Run Support 1 "Big, physical corner. Aggressive and active in run support. Works hard to keep fend off blockers and uses long arms to keep separation. Shows a very good motor and will make plays in pursuit. Is a reliable and strong tackler for the position. Flashes ability to jar the ball carrier with initial pop. Improved his discipline with outside leverage in 2011."

Hall, Clements, Allen, Newman, Jones, Kirkpatrick, Nelson....I feel really damn good about our DB depth. Think about all the teams routinely sending 3-4 wrs on the field like the Pats or Steelers. We are clearly tooling this team to deal with today's passing NFL.

More from ESP Insider ....

What he brings: Kirkpatrick is a tall and athletic corner with the toughness and speed to develop into an effective press corner. He's also one of the better corners in the draft at defending the run. However, there's one major drawbackHe's not a playmaker, and he hasn't shown enough in terms of ball skills to make you think he will be one day.

How he fits: The Bengals have tried this whole offseason to upgrade their secondary that was pretty good a year ago, but there are a lot of questions with age and durability. Their depth is suspect and they just don't match up well in man-to-man coverage. Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer likes to gamble a lot and bring a variety of blitzes, and he is not afraid to put his corners on an island in man-to-man coverage. Kirkpatrick gives them a chance to probably contribute immediately in their subpackages as a third corner, eventually moving into a starting spot to replace Leon Hall and Nate Clements.

OVERVIEW
One of college football’s elite zone coverage defenders, Kirkpatrick is a hard-hitting defensive back who gets excellent elevation, to go with impeccable timing and good arm extension to compete for the thrown ball at its highest point. He will combat the receiver to reach around and deflect the ball, rather than have his man come up with the catch.

Kirkpatrick has a physical and aggressive style of play and is the type that plays until the whistle and willingly sacrifices his body to make the play. Unlike most “elite” players, he does not mind “getting his uniform dirty” and was one of the top gunners on the kickoff units in the Southeastern Conference.

Where the ‘Bama defender excels the most is his natural power that he delivers behind his hits, as the zone defender is a strong force stepping up in the box to challenge the ball carriers attempting to turn the corners.

The junior is well-known for knocking receivers out of bounds with his strong hands and has developed into a dangerous blitzer. When taking on the opponent after the catch, his main priority is to hit with authority and do whatever he can to create the turnover, as he uses his hands effectively in attempts to strip the ball from his man.

Kirkpatrick is very good at challenging receivers at the line of scrimmage, getting into the opponent’s jersey in attempts to reroute and jam. He has the fluid hip snap to come out of his backpedal with no wasted steps.

Prior to joining the Crimson Tide program, Kirkpatrick was rated as one of the top overall players in the 2009 recruiting class, placing fourth overall among the nation’s recruits, according to ESPNU-150, as he was rated 11th on the Rivals.com Top 100 squad. With multiple All-America selections (Parade, USA Today, U.S. Army, EA Sports and Super Prep), he was regarded as the top cornerback in the nation by ESPN and Rivals.com.

Scout.com rated Kirkpatrick fifth in the nation among cornerback recruits, while Rivals rated him the second-best player in the state of Alabama. A member of the Alabama Sports Writers Association's Super 12 team and a first-team All-State selection by the ASWA and the Birmingham News, he was also selected the ASWA Back of the Year in 2008 and was also a two-time All-State player after first earning recognition as a junior in 2007.

Kirkpatrick was a member of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Super Southern 100 team and earned a spot on the Orlando Sentinel All-Southern squad, along with receiving an invitation to play in the Alabama/Mississippi All-Star Game after he recorded 80 tackles with six interceptions and 15 pass deflections as a senior. During his first two seasons with the varsity, he notched 55 stops and five interceptions as a sophomore, followed by 58 tackles and six pass thefts during his junior campaign.

Kirkpatrick enrolled at the University of Alabama in 2009, as he turned down other scholarship offers from Texas, Florida, Louisiana State, Southern California, Miami, Florida State, Auburn, Tennessee and Michigan. He spent most of his time on special teams as a true freshman, recording eight tackles (3 solos).

In 2010, Kirkpatrick started twelve games at weak-side cornerback, placing fifth on the team with 53 tackles that included four sacks for minus-17 yards. He ranked second on the team with three interceptions, in addition to deflecting seven other throws for a unit that ranked third in the nation in total defense (286.38 ypg) and 13th vs. the pass (176.23).

Considered one of the best lock-down cornerbacks in the nation during the 2011 season, Kirkpatrick earned All-American first-team honors. He was part of a secondary that led the way as Alabama’s defense was the only one in the nation to hold opponents to under 130 yards passing (111.46 ypg). The junior was in on 30 tackles, with four stops for loss, two forced fumbles and nine pass deflections.

"Swagga" is a nickname that has defined Kirkpatrick and his career at Alabama. His style of play, his confidence and his reputation all have an edge that suggests he cannot be rattled. Kirkpatrick, who worked hard to become an intimidating presence on the field, also has the swagger of Deion Sanders, his role model. The metamorphosis from Swagga to NFL prospect can be traced to one word: potential.

Having helped the Crimson Tide capture their second national championship during Nick Saban’s tenure at the helm, Kirkpatrick decided to bypass his senior season, leaving the university to play in the NFL in 2012.

yea I heard it. I think its mostly BS. One, he doesn't know what teams boards looked like and 2, I haven't heard about a single team lowering him on their board for character, let alone taking him off completely. Also the laughable parts about him saying dre sucked at alabama.

No. 17: Bengals select: Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama Grade They have questions about Leon Hall coming off an injury, so I like this pick. He was once considered a potential top-10 pick. I like it.

Scouting the Draft: Alabama’s Dre Kirkpatrick
By JONATHAN BALES

In my scouting report on the L.S.U. prospect and consensus top cornerback Morris Claiborne, I mentioned that I have him rated very closely with Alabama’s Dre Kirkpatrick. After reviewing more tape of Kirkpatrick, I maintain that ranking. The only thing stopping Kirkpatrick from truly battling Claiborne to be the top cornerback off the board in April is an arrest in January in which he was charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana.

Scouting Report

At 6-2 and 186 pounds, Dre Kirkpatrick (#21) has ideal length. He uses this to his advantage in press coverage, extending at the line of scrimmage to disrupt receivers’ routes. He doesn’t have elite speed (4.51 40-yard dash), so he needs to maximize the use of his long body.

As you might expect, Kirkpatrick excels in zone coverage. Actually, he’s the best zone coverage cornerback I have seen in a few years (even superior to Claiborne). At the 16-second and 1:37 marks in the video below, you can see him come off his zone responsibility quite well. He does this multiple times a game, reading the quarterback as well as any prospect in the draft.

If Kirkpatrick is drafted by a team that plays primarily zone coverage, he will thrive. He’s special when allowed to use his physicality and instincts, and his football intelligence and awareness are superb.

Kirkpatrick is also the best tackling cornerback in this draft class, and it isn’t close. You can see him fly up for the tackle at the 1:18 mark above. He’s a willing and, for the most part, technically sound tackler.

Many of Kirkpatrick’s tackles come because he is so instinctive in zone coverage. You can see an example of his work at the 53-second mark in the video below against Penn State. He is in Cover 2, meaning the receiver who comes underneath him is his responsibility. Penn State is actually anticipating Cover 2 and calls that route combination to beat Kirkpatrick over the top. Kirkpatrick reads the quarterback’s eyes and sinks down the sideline, forcing an impossible throw. It might look trivial, but that’s a Pro Bowl-type play.

Kirkpatrick’s major weakness (and the reason most have Claiborne rated higher) is man coverage. He’s serviceable on underneath routes, but he struggles on deep passes, particularly when trying to locate the ball. Some analysts say he was stiff in position drills at the combine, although I didn’t notice that. Kirkpatrick will need to improve his man coverage technique in the N.F.L., particularly because he doesn’t possess blazing speed to recover from mistakes.

Projection

Kirkpatrick is a top 10 or 15 talent. He could drop out of that range because of the marijuana-related arrest, but I think a team will gamble on him as early as the ninth overall selection.

Most Likely Destinations

Carolina (#9), Seattle (#12), Arizona (#13), Dallas (#14)

17. Dre Kirkpatrick – DB – Cincinnati Bengals
When Cincinnati was able to line up with Leon Hall and Jonathan Joseph at corner they had one of the best tandems in the NFL. They elected to let Joseph walk in free agency last off-season, and they have been trying to patch the hole since. They brought back Adam Jones, added Terence Newman, but could easily stand to upgrade on either with Kirkpatrick offering a more long term solution to at least one of the Bengals’ corner spots.
