Still tore the ACL in his left knee during his redshirt season in 2007. Though he recovered and looked poised to earn playing time on Larry Johnson's stacked defensive line as a redshirt freshman, he broke his ankle in August. Most players would have looked to rehab their ankles and hope they could convince the NCAA to grant a sixth year of eligibility. Not Devon Still. Instead, he came back on the field the very same season and saw 10 snaps against Michigan State in the final game of the 2008 Big Ten Championship season.Still's sophomore and junior campaigns were strong, including a terrific Outback Bowl performance against Florida, where he led the team with 3.5 tackles for a loss. But it was the 2011 season where Still lived up to his potential, becoming a consensus first-team All-American and perhaps the most dominant defensive player in the country. There was little debate when Still was named the conference defensive player of the year. The best word to describe Still is disruptive. He's not a space eater-type and will not play nose tackle at the next level. He has a very quick first step, uses his hands well, and gets into the backfield effectively. He's versatile - he can play DT in a 4-3 scheme or as a DE in the 3-4 scheme. Still's worst trait is apparently that he used to play too tall and, consequently, without much leverage. That problem has been fixed, but it still rears its ugly head when he becomes fatigued. Additionally, he will need to add to his arsenal of pass rushing moves to stay relevant as a 3-technique tackle. However, listening to Still's competitive nature, that doesn't sound like it will be much of a problem:

"What drives me is that when I first started playing football, whenever I do something, I'm very competitive," he said. "I want to be the best at it. When I got injured my first two years at Penn State, a lot of people said I wouldn't be the same player as I was when I showed up on campus. I think that drove me just to prove everybody wrong. To this day, I don't think I'm where I need to be right now. I want to make my mark in the NFL, just as I did at Penn State, and become one of the best."Still is projected to go late in Thursday's first round, or, at a minimum, sometime during the early-second round.http://www.blackshoe...efensive-tacklehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4mZULf21AE&feature=player_embedded

The Cincinnati Bengals added some youthful depth on the defensive line, taking Penn State's Devon Still in the second round.

Some projected last year's Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year to go late in the first round. But Still slid to the Bengals at No. 53 because he's extremely inconsistent.

I thought the more pressing need for the Bengals was wide receiver. Cincinnati could have chosen LSU wide receiver Rueben Randle.

The Bengals have quality starters on the interior with Geno Atkins and Domata Peko. Cincinnati lost some depth at defensive tackle when Jonathan Fanene signed with the New England Patriots in free agency.

We are going to have one hell of a Dline, but only Green, Ghesham and Shipley worth anything to throw to.

I dont get this pick, I dont hate it, I just dont get it.

inside info I've gotten suggests they will use him like fanene (I could see him slimming down from 303) and that the Bengals definitely felt adding more pass rush was a priority.

He was also simply probably the BPA on their board.

Thinking about this it makes sense in a lot of ways.

Peko and Atkins are elite, but behind them we're a bit 'alright', so as a rotation guy he's gonna see a lot of time and save some miles on our elite guys.
Although we wont go 3-4 he's good in the nose if injuries/matchups mean we need to swap schemes.
Finally a big lane clogger in the middle will stop us being so soft on the run, and free Rey up to be a bit more instinctive rather than having to work stuff out.

Solid solid pick. Still want a genuine 2nd WR but otherwise I'm definitely happy.

Oh I dont hate the pick at all, likely means Sims wont be back after this year, I just hope we get a WR, I dont like the idea of a bunch of UFA types competing for the #2.

Devon Still has probably seen quite enough of the Radio City Music Hall green room to last a lifetime.

He won’t have to look at it any longer. The Bengals ended Still’s fall through the draft by making him the 53rd overall pick of the draft. That ends one awkward situation, but it might create another one. Still came home from the hospital as a baby wearing a Steelers jersey, which could make things uncomfortable now that he plays on another AFC North team.

Still’s talent was talked about throughout his college career, but it never turned into on-field results until the 2011 season when he wound up as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. He had some injury problems early and never was a consistent part of the Nittany Lions front until he was a senior. But he was really, really good as a senior and he goes to a Bengals team that is looking to fill some spots in their defensive line rotation after losing Frostee Rucker and Jonathan Fanene.

If Still was a late bloomer, the Bengals could well have wound up with a steal at this point in the second round.

Its made because it is huge value and he was obviously the top player on their board. It's what the Ravens do...all...the...time. They take talent and work it out and don't reach.

I tend to agree, but it either a. says a lot about what they really think of binns or b. means that they have the other WRs that should go in the third rated higher or just as high as Randle and Sanu.

Or both.

NFL Draft: Devon Still Picked 53rd Overall By The Cincinnati Bengals
by Chris Grovich on Apr 27, 2012 8:33 PM EDT in Football

Devon Still has been drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals with the 21st pick in the second round (53rd overall) of the NFL Draft!

Congratulations to Devon and his family, and to the Bengals for picking up a supremely talented, consensus first-team All-American defensive tackle. After his Great Leap Forward in the 2011 Outback Bowl against Florida's talented offensive line, Still marauded through the competition last season. A turf toe injury slowed him in the last few games of the season (including the TicketCity Bowl against Houston). Possibly, that is what helped cause his drop through the first round. Rest assured, Bengals fans. You're getting first round quality at a second round price.

Here are some of our past posts on Still.

2012 NFL Draft: Your Team Drafted Devon Still, Now What?

Devon Still, 4-3 DT/3-4 DE

Height/Weight: 6'5, 303 pounds

Senior Statistics: 55 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 17 TFL, 1 FF, 1 pass break up

Honors: Consensus First-Team All-American (AP, Sporting News, Walter Camp, FWAA, ESPN.com, CBSSports.com, SI.com, FoxSportsNext.com/Scout.com, Pro Football Weekly, Yahoo! Sports), 2011 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, 2011 Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year, Outland Trophy finalist, Bednarik Award finalist, Nagurski Trophy finalist.

2012 NFL Draft: Devon Still By The Numbers - You Make The Call

I want to make my mark in the NFL, just as I did at Penn State, and become one of the best."

Devon Still Named 2011 Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year

"Still becomes the fifth Nittany Lion to be selected the Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year, which honors former Penn State All-American Courtney Brown and former Michigan State standout Bubba Smith. Penn State's Brown (1999), Jimmy Kennedy (2002), Tamba Hali (2005) and Jared Odrick (2009) also were selected the Big Ten's premier defensive lineman. Still and Odrick are the only defensive tackles to be named Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year since 1994."
