Sounds like Sanu has been all over the field - outside, inside, even the backfield. Can you say versatile?
I certainly was one not that high on Sanu but have definitely warmed up to the pick now. And he is a Bengal now so I hope he kicks ass this year.

Being a UC fan and watching all the Big East games on Rutgers, Sanu was THE offense. It has been said and even Sanu said in the press conference on Bengals.com they had to move him to the slot because that was the primary receiver in the Rutgers offense. Said a different way there QB play was bad and it was the only way they could get the ball into Sanu's hands.

So I do think the label of him just being a slot receiver is lazy and ignorant by those claiming to be scouts or draft experts.

- The Bengals made some solid picks throughout the first two days and that continued with WRMarvin Jones out of Cal in the 5th round. He was the most developed route runner I saw at the Senior Bowl. Real smooth in his release, stem and break.

Good pick. Marvin should make the team over Binns and Hazelton.

I don't know about that, I don't think you're giving either of those guys nearly enough credit. If he's healthy, Hazelton has more talent than any WR on this team not named AJ Green.

Cal receiver Marvin Jones goes to Bengals

When Marvin Jones finally was picked by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round of the NFL draft Saturday, the former Cal wide receiver couldn't help but feel as if it were destiny.
After a 31/2-hour wait, Marvin Lewis Jones received a phone call from Bengals coach Marvin Lewis.
"What cooler name is there than Marvin Lewis?" Jones said after being the 166th overall pick. "I was like, 'I love your name.' Something is up there. It probably was destined."
Earlier, Utah State running back Robert Turbin, a graduate of Irvington High in Fremont, became the first Bay Area player chosen on Day 3 of the draft. Turbin went to the Seattle Seahawks in the fourth round with the 106th overall pick.
In the seventh round, Cal safety D.J. Campbell was taken by the Carolina Panthers with the 216th overall pick, and Cal defensive end Trevor Guyton went three spots later to the Minnesota Vikings.
Jones' stock seemed to rise during predraft events, including the Senior Bowl all-star game, where he caught a touchdown pass, and the scouting combine, where he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds.
But 22 wide receivers were picked before his namesake phoned.
"Oh man, it was definitely crazy ... stressful," Jones said. "I went up and down with emotions. Initially, I was high on a lot of people's boards. That didn't work out for whatever reason. Regardless of what theories I have, it doesn't matter.
"I ended up in a great spot.

I'm blessed for the opportunity. I just want to start my new life as a Cincinnati Bengal."

Jones, the first receiver from Cal to be drafted since the Philadelphia Eagles took DeSean Jackson in the second round in 2008, said he's excited to be part of a young offense that last year featured rookie quarterback Andy Dalton and wideout A.J. Green.
"The young talent says something about the direction they're going," Jones said. "They run a West Coast offense. Obviously, playing at Cal for four years, that's what I'm used to. I can come in and run every route and vie for a position."
Jones, listed at 6-foot-2 and 199 pounds, caught 62 passes for 846 yards and three touchdowns as a senior in 2011, giving him career totals of 156 receptions for 2,270 yards and 13 TDs.
Turbin rebounded from ACL knee surgery that cost him the entire 2010 season to rush for 1,517 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior last fall. He had eight 100-yard rushing games and was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year.
Called "a powerhouse runner" by ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr., the 5-foot-10, 220-pounder will be an excellent complement to starter Marshawn Lynch, the Cal product who rushed for 1,204 yards last season. The Seahawks had no other runner with even 250 rushing yards.
At the scouting combine, where he ran a 4.5 time for 40 yards, Turbin said he's determined to succeed in the NFL no matter where he was drafted.
"I've been proving myself my entire life,'' said Turbin, who rushed for 3,315 career yards at Utah State. "I'm very used to it, and I'm very open to it. It doesn't get me down or bother me or get me angry. I love playing football."
Bob Spain, his coach at Irvington and now the coach at Dougherty Valley in San Ramon, has no doubts Turbin will deliver in the NFL.
"Someone is going to make a phenomenal pick in this draft, and they're going to get a true steal," Spain said. "Kids like that, I mean, it's a once-in-a-lifetime coaching experience."

...and one year in our system under Gruden, ...advantage Hazelton.

Plus the new CBA rules give the advantage to veterans with less hitting and less training in pads. Veterans shine under those conditions.

You UC guys are killin me lol

Lets set your hate for all things UC aside.

Your poll was premature, ...till we know how TC will shake out under the new CBA.

I say all rookies are disadvantaged and coaches across the league will be making the choice between the devil they know and the devil they don't know.

It's like a 4th and 1 QB sneak that takes 3 days pull guys off the pile.

I really like Jones and I think the UC guys are really over-stating things. Hazelton was a highly rated recruit out of high school, had one decent season at USC and then was beaten out by a bunch of WRs who were solid, but nothing special (from an NFL perspective). There was a reason he wasn't drafted last year.

Jones had multiple seasons with better production than Hazelton in the same league, with worse QBs. And Sanu had way better production in the Big East than Hazelton did.

Until proven otherwise, I'm going to go with the guys who were coveted enough by NFL teams to be drafted in the 3rd and 5th round and weren't passed over 250 times. Of course there will be competition in training camp and I wish Binns, Hazelton and everyone else all the best, but if I had to put money on who is going to stick on the 53 man roster, I'll go with the draft picks.

Jones ready after longer than expected wait

The wait was longer than expected for California wide receiver Marvin Jones, but after being drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals, his focus is on what comes next.
“There’s lots of times where people expect to go high and something happens to where you get picked lower,” Jones said Saturday in a conference call. “I don’t even want to relish on that. I just want to relish the fact I am in the league, going to a team that I can come in and compete early.”

“The Bengals, they are obviously a team on the rise. It’s just a great situation.”

Regarded as a second day selection after strong performances at the Senior Bowl and combine, Jones had to wait until the 31st pick in the fifth round, 166th overall, to have his name called.

“I definitely thought I was going to go higher, maybe the second round,” he said. “It happened, it was a roller coaster. My emotions went up and down, but ultimately I’m just happy with the Bengals and ready to start this journey.”

Jones should compete immediately for a starting job opposite A.J. Green, who made the Pro Bowl as a rookie after catching 65 passes for 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns. The 6-foot-1, 191-pounder has experience in that role, playing alongside a potential first-round pick in Keenan Allen for two seasons.

“I’ve experienced both sides,” Jones said. “I’ve experienced being a No. 1 for a little while and I have experienced being a No. 2. Regardless of where I’m at, I know I can be a big contributor. Whatever they want me to do, that’s what I’m going to do to the best of my abilities.”

The Bengals did not have much contact with Jones through the draft process, but knew they were a possibility. That was confirmed once he received the call from the Bengals head coach.

“His name is Marvin Lewis and my name is Marvin Lewis Jones. Maybe it’s destiny,” he said.

Marvin Jones, a Mel Kiper Impact Player
[background=rgb(245, 208, 198)]He has the talent of a second-round pick, but a knee injury probably dropped him on some boards. Still, he has good size (6-foot-2, 200 pounds) and sub-4.5 speed, and could end up beating out fellow rookie Mohamed Sanu for the No. 2 WR spot across from A.J. Green. That's a good camp battle to watch.[/background]
Damn. That's some vintage Chad Johnson-style route running. I'm officially excited to see this kid in stripes.
Hazleton wasn't drafted because he tore up his knee. When healthy, that guy showed he has more than enough ability to be a #2 or #3 WR. Whether he ever puts it all together is another story.
