Yep. He was my most questionable pick. Don't see how he upgrades and I really didnt see anything in the clips I've seen.
don't know which clips you watched, but make not whether he's playing safety or corner. He played a lot of corner last year but he's really a safety. So that may skew how he looks on tape.

its strange that guys drop to nearly DOUBLE their projected pick. im eager to see this guy on the field
yea this year more than usual it seems like the rankings of guys were all over the place. Particularly at WR and RB. Lots of guys went much later than where people thought they'd go.

Greener pastures for Boise safety

Posted 37 minutes ago

Paul Dehner Bengals.com Contributor

Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer loves oversized safeties. He grabbed another by selecting the tallest and heaviest safety in the draft with the final pick in the fifth round Saturday, the one the Bengals got in the Keith Rivers trade.

Boise State safety George Iloka (6-4, 225 pounds) lives on the fence between safety and linebacker, but brings the heavy pop coveted by the Zimmer defenses.

“I really got excited seeing him do a lot of things we like to do on tape,” Marvin Lewis said. “He's been a very, very good hitter. He's going to have to learn to play the game and break down and make some tackles. Once in a while he gets out of control because he's going so fast. But I really love everything about him.”

The lovefest originated from his coaches at Boise who raved about the versatility of a guy who started in nickel and dime packages, as well free safety, strong safety and corner during his career. But the instant reaction to the pick is Iloka's side-speed ratio in a changing NFL infused with big-body tight ends running the seams.

“I can cover big tight ends that are athletic,” said Iloka, who ran a 4.66 40 at the scouting combine. “You need someone that can match up with them.”

At 17, Iloka graduated early from high school, was the starting safety for the Broncos and named a Freshman All-American. During his four-year career he finished with 232 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and seven interceptions. Of course, as has been the case at Boise, he also took part in a 50-3 record over his four seasons on the blue turf.

The Bengals did install new turf this offseason, unfortunately, it's not blue. An adjustment Iloka will gladly make with his new team.

“Oh yeah, on to greener pastures,” he said.

Sign of the times....guys like Fleener are going to become more and more common and the DB's are going to need to be bigger too
And as soon as that happens the little squirt WRs are going to make a comeback, like Muggsy Bogues in the NBA.

Watching his highlights I think he'll need to tackle better at this level. He's got the range and takes pretty good angles but there seem to be a lot of arm tackles. He's grabbing the guy and trying to throw them to the ground instead of getting his body across their path & driving through them. The grab-&-toss thing works for him most of the time but an NFL back will run right through that stuff. Not seeing the "big hitter" thing at all - he kind of reminds me of Rey's USC tape; the intensity is there but athleticism can only cover for bad technique for so long. Anyone can make a blindside hit on a QB or a WR that's been hung out to dry going over the middle. Show me a clip of him knocking a ball loose after a solid catch or coming downhill and meeting the RB in the gap & I'd be a lot more impressed.

Not saying he's garbage by any means, but this isn't Ronnie Lott.

Iloka vs. Sands. Both 5th rounders. Very similar size, Iloka little heavier. Who would you tab the favorite between the two for a roster spot if it comes down to that?
If Sands can't be clearly better than Iloka, he's in trouble.

At this point, I'd say Sands if for no other reason that he's already had a year in the program. 'Course, we will see in TC.

Don't we normally keep 4 S's? I'd think Nelson, Mays, Sands, and IIoka.
I think Jeromy Miles is a S? Special teams captain and leading tackler. Lots of people sung his praises last year for his special teams work so both Iloka and Sands are going to have to beat him out there to earn a spot.

We're in injury away from being really, really shady back there.

I guess we do have some guys that would, or so it seems, make an easy transition from corner to safety.

typically they go 5 and 5. They went 4 and 6 last year as they wanted to keep mays, miles and sands, but didn't seem to think they were ready for significant snaps on defense.

think we might see 6CB/4S this year. Or possibly 5 and 4 with Allen's versatility.

mel kiper impact player
[background=rgb(245, 208, 198)]The Bengals could see good competition at strong safety; the problem for Iloka is that he fits the profile of a free safety. He has good coverage skills and simply shies away from contact on occasions. It's odd, because at over 6-3, 225, he has the physical profile of a strong safety. I said Iloka was a little overrated (as, say, a second-round pick) because of questions about his willingness to tackle, but he could be a steal in the sixth. The guy played throughout all four seasons at Boise St., so he's not going to look lost out there.[/background]
32 (167) Cincinnati Bengals (from New York Giants): FS George Iloka, Boise State
The Bengals have stuck to their height-weight-speed approach, selecting a prospect who looks better in person than he did on tape. Looked stiff at the Combine, missed too many tackles in space and did not make a lot of plays on the ball.

He got rave reviews for his performance at the combine, especially from the NFLN talking heads. Iloka was a great pick at the end of Round 5. No ifs, ands,or buts. If the Ravens had taken Iloka in the 5th round, Nawrocki would have hailed the pick as further proof of Ozzie Newsome's genius. Fuck him, and the people on this board who like to bend over and take it whenever the haters unzip.
