!!!!!WITH THE 191ST PICK THE BENGALS SELECT Dan "Boom" Herron!!!!!

Recommended Posts

not expecting much out of a 6th round pick that is a 5th-6th round pick based on talent(no pro team cares if he got "improper benefits". i know bucks fans have higher expectations, but a 6th rounder is a 6th rounder... id be happy if he takes brian leonards job. but aside from that he isnt likely to make much of a difference in the teams W/L columns..

always fun to draft local school guys, and hope he does well. Not many backs after the 2nd-3rd round are ever anything more than an accent back. unless they drop due to off field stuff(ala bernard scott).

but if the line plays improved with the new guard, the power run game might be more viable.

Quit being a hater, the guy is a Bengal now.

Get over it.

But he has shown it on the NFL level for 3 years now. Boom was a productive back at Ohio State who has not shown anything 1 way or the other yet. At least give him a year or 2 before you decide he sucks, otherwise you're just being a hater.

rey is actually "solid" in run support.. but is the SUPER suck in pass coverage...

difference being, and im on your side mostly here, is that reyrey was a high pick with high expectations based on skill level in college... herron is a low level pick based on expectations based on college performance.

its not like he was a projected 5th-6th rounder 'cause all the draftnicks are wolverine fans or anything...

his skillset is of the 5th-6th round variety...

I see alot of untapped potential on this guy. Didn't think much at first after watching the vids, but looking again I see some bad habits (like trying to trust his speed to much when cutting to the outside when he should just run forward to finish the run for more yardage) which can be coached out of him.

I don't know why - he reminds me of a smaller version of Bernard Pierce with some catching ability.

I agree, ...he's got to be better than anything coming out of the University of Chicago.

...or did you mean the University of Calgary?

(please tell me you don't live in Cincinnati)

Ouch that hurt, I just don't like hearing the hype people that go to or support UC (better ?) have for Pead. No real hate or anything, I just don't see Pead as anything but less of a player than Herron. I am not an OSU homer either and I don't care for the hype they put on their players either. However, there is something (call it a hunch) about this pick that I like and I don't like much about the picks this year. I may be wrong but we'll have an entire season to argue the merits which will be an exciting one. I don't live in Cinci but I do live next to multiple distilleries and maybe that's part of the problem... 1/2 :ninja:

The good: The Bengals waited until the last pick to draft an RB, but Ohio State's Dan Herron comes with a big-school pedigree and history of producing on the biggest stage. The bad: He's not the explosive back they'd like to place opposite BenJarvus Green-Ellis. He doesn't quite have the home-run gear. The bottom line: To find an RB who is 10th in career rushing yards at Ohio State in the sixth round is great value.

But where did anyone in this thread bring up UC or Pead. I apologize if I missed it. And nor do I recall any UC fan here ragging on Ohio State in any other thread relative to the draft. Again I apologize if I missed it. The whole UC thing came out of nowhere by YOU. Why the fuck even bring up UC and Pead in this thread.

If Pead and Herrom are comparable, then we really got a good deal, since Pead is a round 2 guy.

Its a 6th round poick so its not a big deal. Dont like the pick because I dont think there is anyway he can make the roster. He doesnt seem to have NFL skills and Ive seen alot of him. I expect him to be out of the league within 2 years.
Beating out Ced Peerman isn't that incredible of a goal...plus he is practice squad eligible for 3 years or so.

Thats just it. His talent level is far below Peerman who is a fringe player in the NFL. Not many 6th rounders make it...I dont expect much from Herron, and anybody that is will be disappointed. Frankly im really suprised that he even got drafted. I thought we would have nabbed him as a UDFA.

Our scouts know their stuff...they may bust later due to injuries and idiocy, but talentwise they have people pegged. He has his chance of sticking in some role, and that's all you can ask.

Peerman is pretty good on teams, I won't be completely shocked if he isnt here seeing as we drafted a guy who is a good gunner, but I won't be shocked if he stays either.

yea if herron wins a spot, it will be scott's.

It is hard to stay for long as just a teams guy..you better beat someone out or get squeezed out. And if the new guy is close, PS eligibility can make the difference if we are squeezed on roster spots in other positions for whatver reason.

I did not mean to imply it was all from this board. Most of it comes from the people I BS with at tailgates or sit next to at the games. Basically it was rattling someones cage but no reply so far. As for bringing them up in the thread together, both are running backs, both went to schools in Ohio, Pead had 27 career TDs (in the Big East) while Herron had 32 (in the Big Ten), Both were born in Ohio in 1989, Pead and Herron were interviewed together at the Senior Bowl ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvWc5c_infU ), etc... Usually anything Ohio based or born stirs up a little conversation for better or worse we all usually end up learning a little more than had we not attempted to stir.

Herron ends Bengals' Buckeye drought with a Boom
Posted 14 minutes ago

Paul Dehner
Bengals.com

The Bengals searched for running back depth all weekend, but it took until the final pick to provide it when they took Ohio State running back Dan “Boom” Herron in the sixth round.

A back with the desired grade didn't emerge until Herron at No.191 as Cincinnati hoped to find its version of the overlooked running back in the mold of Houston's undrafted Arian Foster and Herron's teammate BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

The story of Herron's career derailed along with Ohio State as scandal engulfed the program prior to this senior season. Herron ended up serving a five-game suspension for accepting illegal benefits. Suspensions and turmoil threw off the results of his disappointing, shortened senior campaign.

"It was off," Marvin Lewis said.

Still, the Bengals felt numbers like the 5.4 yards per carry he averaged in 2010 on his way to 1,155 yards and sixteen touchdowns far outweighed any off-the-field concerns.

“Body of work," retiring director of football operation Jim Lippincott said. "It has to be on tape. That’s what’s really, really, really important — the most important part is the tape-work."

Actually, the only number that did raise a red flag on Herron was his slow 40 time at the scouting combine (4.66). An improved number at his pro day (unofficial 4.51) helped counter the workout times and focus on the body of work. Which when you are 10th on the all-time rushing list at Ohio State, deserves attention.

“I ran a lot better at pro day,” Herron said. “I think it definitely helped me out. I’m sure (the 40) may have had a part in (lasting to the sixth round) but I know God has a plan for me. I’m with Cincinnati now. I’m very thankful to be there.”

It's been a while since a Buckeye has been here. In fact, 18 drafts passed since the Bengals selected an Ohio State player when they took defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson No. 1 and fullback Jeff Cothran in the third round. But the drought ended with a Boom in the sixth round Saturday. Now, he arrives into a stable filled with Green-Ellis, Bernard Scott, Brian Leonard, Cedric Peerman, and Aaron Brown seeking a roster spot.

“I’m willing to do whatever the Bengals want me to do,” Herron said. “However I can get on the field that’s what I’ll do.”

It will have to probably be on special teams, where Peerman has a decided edge coming off a season with a second-best 13 tackles.
