Votto on Injury, Rehab and Watching a Winner

When the Reds announced that Joey Votto needed knee surgery and was going to miss a month, most thought the best-case scenario would be the first-place Reds treading water and hopefully keeping the Pirates and Cardinals at bay. And even that was seen as a bit optimistic.

But since the announcement on July 17, the Reds went 24-9 through Aug. 19 and saw their lead grow from 1 game in the National League Central standings to 6.5 games. At one point, the Reds won 10 in a row, and immediately following Votto’s absence the team reeled off 16 wins in 18 games. There was so much success that it wasn’t seen as a catastrophe when Votto aggravated his knee and required another surgery earlier this month that pushed his return further.

In his absence, the Reds have been fine — better than fine, even. But make no mistake, this team is better with the 2010 MVP in the lineup, and the confidence of playing so well without him and then getting him back should have nothing but positive results when he does return.

Votto says he’s still feeling some pain from the second procedure, which was done on Aug. 10. He was back on the field on Aug. 19 taking grounders, but he was not planning on joining the team for its short four-game road trip to Philadelphia.

CityBeat spoke to Votto before the Aug. 19 victory over the Cubs about watching his team, his rehab and more.

CityBeat: What’s it been like watching your team play like this while you’re gone? Are there some mixed feelings — you’ve got to be happy that your team is winning, but also it has to feel strange that you’re not a part of it?

Joey Votto: I am. I made a comment earlier that the thing that probably bothers me the most is that I’ve never, never been a part of a team’s hot streak quite like this.

I never experienced it in the minor leagues or the majors. Obviously, our first few years here in Cincinnati were quite lean. To go a month where you lose probably less than 10 games is pretty special, a 10-game win streak. They said they equaled the mark from 1890, and it’s tough to watch because I know that I would have really enjoyed it had I been a part.

CB: Heck, you could have gotten 15-16 games if they had you.

JV: You never know how things work. It just can be weird sometimes during hot times. You don’t know whether you’d get in the way or help. I’m confident that you put me on a team and I’m going to make that team better, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that 10-game win streak would be as long as it was.

CB: How are you feeling now with your knee and progress?

JV: Tired of rehabbing. But I am making progress and I’m feeling better.

CB: This was your first surgery, right? Was there some trepidation going in because you’ve never had surgery?

JV: Of course, there’s some nerves before the surgery. You trust they know what they’re doing. They’ve done tens of thousands of them. There’s too many people to answer to, so that usually solves most of my concerns.

CB: The second injury, the sliding in Chicago, seemed to be a fluke, but do you worry about slowing yourself down or worrying whether it’ll happen again or coming back too soon?

JV: No. I’ll come back when I’m right. I don’t think it makes sense to come back and potentially re-injure it again.

CB: Does it make it easier when you see what the team is doing in your absence?

JV: No question. It definitely takes some pressure off of me. If we were duking it out with Pittsburgh and St. Louis for the first spot, I’d feel more pressure to come back. The way they’re playing, it gives me piece of mind that I can come back when I’m 100 percent.

CB: It’s got to be great to see what Todd Frazier’s doing in your place?

JV: Yes, it is. I’m very happy for him. I’m more happy for [Ryan] Ludwick because of what he’s been through.

CB: He seems like he’s brought a lot to this team, maybe bringing that jolt that Scott Rolen did two years ago?

JV: They’re two totally different guys. Scott has a track record.

Scott Rolen pipes in: “Right here. Be careful how you answer that question.”

JV: He has a track record.

Scott Rolen: I hear you.

JV: (continues) ... where as Ludwick was a question mark type of guy. You didn’t know what guy you were going to get. Luckily we got the guy who was an All-Star in St. Louis and hopefully he’s that guy going forward.

CINCINNATI — Joey Votto returns to his professional baseball roots Tuesday night when he stops in at Dayton’s Fifth Third Field to play a rehab game with the Dayton Dragons.

Normally, that would guarantee and overflow sellouts but the Dragons already are working on about 10 years worth of selling out every game.

If all goes well then the plans is for Votto to rejoin the Cincinnati Reds in Houston — probably on Saturday, which is September 1 and the date on which rosters can be expanded, meaning the Reds won’t have to drop anybody from the 25-man roster when Votto comes off the disabled list.

“I hope to play two games, depending upon how I’m feeling,” said Votto. “I’m a little apprehensive, because I haven’t play for such a long time, but once I get going I’ll be fine.”

Votto has been doing daily workouts on the field, taking ground balls and making throws and said, “It has gone pretty good. I’ll progress today (Sunday) and I have a long way to go with my swing. I’m sure anything I’m uncomfortable with will stand out during my rehab games.”

WHILE THE NEWS gets better for Votto, it keeps getting worse for relief pitcher Nick Masset, who so far has missed the entire season.

He was close to coming back, he felt, and was pitching without discomfort in his shoulder at Class AAA Louisville. But he suffered a setback last week, soreness in the shoulder, and returned to Cincinnati.

He underwent an MRI this weekend and is awaiting results, but his normally upbeat demeanor was glum and apprehensive Sunday morning.
“I had a minor (he hopes) setback after my outing Tuesday in Louisville,” he said. “I had a little bit of soreness in my shoulder. It has been tough, with the way the team has been playing. My biggest objective this year was to get healthy, get back on the mound, help this team out down the stretch. Unfortunately, I’ve had a couple of setbacks here and there and it is not helping my cause. It has been tough — a long process during which I’ve learned a lot about my shoulder.”

It is looking more and more as if Masset won’t appear on the mound this year for the Reds and it is also possible that surgery is in the immediate future.
WITH SEVEN STRAIGHT strikeouts before he singled in his last at-bat Saturday, Drew Stubbs felt a full frontal assault of boos from the fans.
“These skids usually come fast for most people,” said manager Dusty Baker. “It tears your heart out to see it (and hear it) because you know how much he wants it and how hard he is trying. It makes it worse when it is at home. But that’s all part of the deal.”

Stubbs was not in Sunday’s lineup, but it had nothing to do with his four strikeouts Saturday. It was already planned.
T-SHIRTS ARE a big item in the Reds clubhouse and there were a couple of interesting ones Sunday morning.
Pitcher Mat Latos walked in the door with a gray shirt on which was printed: “Paddle faster, I hear banjos.”
And Todd Frazier was wearing a blue one that said, “I play for the National League. We will win.” Said Frazier, “Nike made them up. Anybody who wears Nike got one during spring training.”
Do you think the American League players sgot one that said, “I play for the American League. We will win?” Sure, they did.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Little League builds all the egos up of those kids and then they come to the majors and become Todd Frazier.” — Joey Votto, speaking kiddingly to teammate Jay Bruce.

Baker told Marty on the pregame show that Votto will activated Saturday. Basically means they can add him without cutting someone. [s]#[/s]reds

Anyone else find it strange that Votto is hurt, and the guy the Reds almost traded Votto for last year, Jose Bautista is out for the season.

On a side note, Rolen has been a great veteran presence for the Reds, but Edwin Encarnacion is killing it this year for the Blue Jays.

Edwin has 34 homers 89 RBIs and 13 SB. He is hitting .287 for the season.

He's also a DH and not a 3rd baseman.

Hes post game comments dont sound great though. He said there is still pain and swelling and he isnt running near full speed or sliding.

Please just do whatever it takes to be ready for the playoffs. A set back is the last thing we can have happen.

as much as Dusty and others claim it won't happen, I still think Votto will get spelled by Frazier every few days at first base until the playoffs.

Joey Votto, 1-for-2 with a walk here in Dayton tonight, acknowledged he has not been running at full speed on his surgically repaired left knee.
Votto in two rehab games at Dayton did not show a limp, but neither was he sprinting. Or sliding.

“I was holding back,” Votto said. “I’ve still got a bit to go, but I feel like I made a lot of progress today.”

Votto played five innings in each of his Dayton games, going a combined 1-for-3 (a single) with two walks and a run scored.

Votto has had some residual pain and swelling but said he is improving on both fronts.

“Anybody that’s had a surgery knows the swelling part of it takes time, and I’m learning that first-hand right now,” Votto said. “It’s slow. It’s taking longer than I had hoped.”

Is he ready to rejoin the Reds?

“I don’t know,” Votto said. “I’m out there playing ‘A’ ball right now, and I’m not as comfortable as I could or should be. Hopefully the recovery speeds up and I’m ready for this weekend, but who knows? I’m not going to put a date on it, because I don’t think that’s fair to the fans and I don’t think that’s fair to me.”

yeah, I don't think the Frazier problem is a problem until you reach the playoffs. For now guys will get their days off, but I want the team putting out their best lineup each day in the playoffs. No cairo/valdez/navarro games please.

I want Votto, Bruce, Phillips, Ludwick, Frazier, Rolen, and Hanigan in the lineup every day in the playoffs if possible. Runs are going to be at a premium against the top pitchers. I'm assuming the schedule has off days to let Rolen rest. Using Frazier as a pinch hitter only would be criminal.

is the first the last day you can call people up?

With an 8 game lead, I say you scratch bringing Joey up Saturday if you can. Give him another 4-5 days. The team is playing well and most of the rest of the schedule is a joke.

Don't rush him if you don't have to.

No. You can call people up anytime after Sep 1.

Joey is getting called up Saturday either way. Minor league season is going to be over and you can call up anyone from your 40 man roster on the first, no limit really.

Doesn't mean he'll play but hell get called up for sure.
