Observations and other notes from the first day of training camp:

THE CROWD: The first practice on the fields adjacent to Paul Brown Stadium drew a little over 1,500. With 1,600 passes available, there were 400 available when the gates opened at 1 p.m.

Said Bengals Director of Sales and Public Affairs Jeff Berding: “It’s certainly what we hoped for. Frankly we didn’t know what to expect as far as how many people were going to come down and take in the practice. We were a little nervous in the sense that we want people to come down but we didn’t want to send away thousands away disappointed. The right number came today.”

INJURIES: Before practice, CB Dre Kirkpatrick (knee) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list while CB Nate Clements (abdominal strain), DT Pat Sims (ankle), WR Jordan Shipley (knee) and K Mike Nugent (hamstring) were put on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list.

During practice DE Robert Geathers twisted his knee while OG Travelle Wharton and WR Mohamed Sanu had heat-related issues.

LINING UP: In the secondary for the first snap were Leon Hall and Terence Newman at the corners and Reggie Nelson and Taylor Mays at safety. As expected, Brandon Tate lined up at the second receiver spot. With Geathers being injured early, Carlos Dunlap got plenty of first-team snaps.

PLAYS OF NOTE: Andy Dalton’s first pass of training camp in 11-on-11 drills was a completion to A.J. Green. … Dalton and tight end Jermaine Gresham connected a couple times downfield. … Nelson had the first interception of camp on a Dalton long pass that was intended for Armon Binns. … Vidal Hazelton hauled in a high pass from Zac Robinson in front of Chris Lewis-Harris. … Taveon Rogers hauled in a Tyler Hansen pass that was thrown into double coverage. … Running back Aaron Brown showed some quickness with a long run off the left side. … Had this been full contact, DE Jamaal Anderson would have had a sack of Dalton due to a blown assignment on the line.

HIT OF THE DAY: Which might sound odd since it was a non-contact session goes to the training cart on the sideline. Binns caught a pass way out of bounds as Lewis-Harris lost his balance after the play and made contact with the back of the cart. Lewis-Harris though was OK and returned to practice.

Bengals draw near-capacity crowd for first home practice

By Jay Morrison

Staff Writer

CINCINNATI —

Cincinnati Bengals officials were not exactly sure what to expect Friday as the team opened training camp for the first time ever in downtown Cincinnati.

What they got was a near-capacity crowd north of 1,500 fans, the first of which showed up at the Paul Brown Stadium plaza ticket window at 5:30 a.m.

“The first two folks I met this morning, one had driven seven hours from Asheville, N.C.., with his teenage son, and another fan came up from Atlanta to go to every practice every this weekend,” said Jeff Berding, the Bengals director of sales and public affairs.

“There’s been a lot of work since December on bringing training camp to downtown to Cincinnati,” Berding added. “We’re very excited with how everything has gone for the football team, which is obviously the first order of business, and certainly for our fans.”

The biggest news as camp opened were the injuries to pair of cornerbacks.

Rookie Dre Kirkpatrick, whom the team selected No. 17 overall in April, was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List with a knee injury and watched from the sideline. He is expected to miss up to four weeks.

Meanwhile Leon Hall, the Bengals’ first-round pick in 2007, realized his goal of returning from an Achilles injury in November in time for the first practice of training camp.

“I felt rusty for sure, but my Achilles felt fine,” said Hall, who lined up opposite Terence Newman for the first snap and continued to see plenty of work.

“I felt like I was able to move and cut and break and everything how I wanted to, but my technique was definitely rusty, which I’ll get that worked out,” Hall continued. “I didn’t feel hesitant at all, so that was good.”

Head coach Marvin Lewis said Hall wasn’t the only one who showed rust, which was to be expected in the first practice of camp.

“I think we need to be a lot sharper with things,” he said. “We have to make sure that we take care of first base first before we move into second base. I think that’s important. We’ll get a good chance to evaluate the tape and make sure we, as coaches, understand that as well so that we can be demanding on the details of what we need to get done.”

Today’s practice is scheduled for 3:15-5 p.m. Free tickets will be distributed at the north ticket office beginning at 10 a.m. Gates open at 1:15 p.m.

“I would think it’s natural we will get more fans (Saturday),” Berding said. “The fact that we were at 1,500 on a Friday, we certainly would think we’ll be at the 1,600 limit (today). We encourage folks to get down here early, but I don’t think people need to get down here at 5:30 in the morning.”
Tex: I was thinking about the heat and cramp/hydration issues which go along with every camp opening. I remember the Cowboys used to train each year in Thousand Oaks, CA...ostensibly to escape N Texas summer heat. It seemed to work for them. Since they have been at Valley Ranch--one helluva complex BTW--is there anymore issues heat-related, than they would have had before?

Seem as though this stuff goes on everywhere.
The Cowboys actually are training in Oxnard, starting tomorrow. There was a 3-day rookie camp at Valley Ranch (I live about 10 mins from there) this past week. The entire team will come back home to Valley Ranch in several weeks. I believe they're signed for 3 years in Oxnard. It's possible they will split time in San Antonio in the future - just not this year.

I don't get the moving training camp around stuff, personally. It's expensive, disruptive with time zone changes, etc. but the Cowboys have a huge following and I'm sure they make $ on it in some way.
When Jimmy Johnson was head coach, he had some of the training camps in Austin and T-O, and then later the team had a few in Wichita Falls, which is about the hottest place on earth in summer. And I think it wore them out, and the team wasn't great but a big part of that wasn't training camp - they didn't have good players. When they train in San Antonio, they're inside in a bubble.

Long-winded answer to your question, I don't think they'll go back to Wichita Falls anytime soon, but I haven't seen anything that suggests that the weather during TC has affected them much one way or the other during the season. That said, one of the complaints about the team in the past several years is they get pushed around a lot, especially late in games. They brought Mike Woicik (sp?) back... he was the strength coach in NE, and was the strength coach here in Dallas during the SB run, so it'll be interesting to see if it makes any difference.

Another good Hoard article on Wharton....

Travelle Wharton has eight years of NFL experience under his belt including 99 starts as a member of the Carolina Panthers. But before taking the field on Friday for his first training camp practice as a member of the Bengals, Wharton was a bit nervous.

“I don’t know if I slept the night before because I was just ready to get to work,” said Wharton. “I woke up every hour checking the clock to make sure I wouldn’t be late. Coming into a new team, it’s a mix of everything – different schedule, different everything – and I’m coming in and just taking it all in.”

Unfortunately for Travelle, his practice debut with his new team ended early as he was one of three players who had to exit due to heat and hydration issues.
“It got me at the end,” said Wharton. “That surprised me because I’ve been down in the Carolinas my whole life and it’s really humid, but it was a hot one yesterday. I’m taking in my fluids and I’ll have a great day today.”

“With the humidity and heat the way it was yesterday and with the storms rolling around us the last couple of days, it zapped some of the guys,” said head coach Marvin Lewis. “But everybody this morning seems to be back and ready to go.”

Wharton is expected to be the Bengals starting left guard this year after signing a reported 3 year/$10 million contract as a free agent on March 17[sup]th[/sup]. He brings a reputation for being an outstanding run blocker after starting at both guard and tackle for Carolina.

“I can learn a lot from him,” said Bengals rookie Kevin Zeitler. “You can only learn certain things from experience, and just watching him on film and talking to him about certain techniques – there’s a whole wealth of knowledge there.”

“My job is to come in here and be a great teammate and make my blocks,” said Wharton. “I really can’t control anything else. I just want to come in here and play the best football of my career.”

With the Panthers last year, Wharton helped rookie QB Cam Newton compile 4051 passing yards with 21 TD and 706 rushing yards with 14 TD. Now he’s eager to work with the other rookie quarterback that went to the Pro Bowl last season Andy Dalton.

“Man, it seems like he’s been around for years,” Wharton said of Dalton. “His poise, his mannerisms, and the way he carries himself – he’s going to be a pro for a very long time. The way he comes in and works and pays attention to details – it’s no secret why he is as good as he is. He has great leadership qualities.”

The Bengals are high on Wharton’s leadership ability as well, and now that he has that first practice behind him, Travelle is ready to settle in with his new team.
“You get the nerves out on day one,” said Wharton. “Everybody is anxious to get on the field, but once you’re out there and get everything going, it settles down and you’re like, ‘Alright, it’s time to play football and get after it.’”

More hits: Geathers OK; Newman in exclusive group

Posted 5 hours ago

Geoff Hobson Editor Bengals.com

Update: 3:15 p.m.

After tweaking his knee in Friday's first practice, left end Robert Geathers has joined the list of players that is not practicing but has nothing serious and should return "soon."

Head coach Marvin Lewis said at a Paul Brown Stadium news conference Saturday that Geathers's tests were all negative and that he'll be fine. He said the same about the five guys that started camp on the shelf Friday, although it's believed cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick (leg) has another month to go for the broken bone spur around his knee to heal.

But it sounds like kicker Mike Nugent and defensive tackle Pat Sims are merely fighting through some hamstring issues and should appear soon. Lewis also put wide receiver Jordan Shipley (knee) in that group as he recovers from a torn ACL.

» Left tackle Andrew Whitworth is one of those team leaders Lewis is talking about that agreed to put a stop to Twitter. He's also the club's player representative to the NFL Players Association and he's checking to see if it's legal in the new collective bargaining agreement. Even though he's all for the ban and thinks it is OK with the CBA.

"It's more of a thing as a team, 'Let's buy into the fact that it's something that's not really important,' " Whitworth said. "It's not a thing where we want to fine guys 10 grand if they Twitter. I think we're just more saying, 'Let our focus be on what we're doing, not on something else.' "

Whitworth is an easy convert. He's a social media blank slate.

"I don't have a Twitter. I don't have a MySpace, a Facebook, whatever else there is," Whitworth said. "I've never been one of those guys. Some people stressed it to me. Like agents at different times for marketing and 'one of those things that can help you get to the Pro Bowl,' and all that kind of mess. That's not important to me. That's the truth. My entertainment is every Sunday with all the work I've put in to go out and play well. That's what our focus should be as a team."

THE SCENE: Another crowd of a little over 1,500 watched on the practice fields. The temperature throughout was 81 degrees, which was 11 degrees cooler than Friday.

INJURIES: Did not practice — DE Robert Geathers (knee) with his status being day-to-day; Limited – WR Brandon Tate (undetermined).
Active/Non-Football Injury — CB Dre Kirkpatrick (knee); Active/Physically Unable to Perform — CB Nate Clements (abdominal strain), DT Pat Sims (ankle), WR Jordan Shipley (knee) and K Mike Nugent (hamstring)

NOT IN SYNC: It was definitely a practice where the defense was ahead of the offense as there was a mix of dropped passes, timing issues and incompletions on deep routes. The only deep pass that Andy Dalton completed was late in the two-hour session to A.J. Green.

PLAYS OF NOTE: Dalton and Armon Binns nearly connected on a deep crossing route, but Binns dropped it at the end after getting separation. … Taylor Mays had good coverage on Green on a Dalton attempt where he rolled out. … Defensive end Michael Johnson had pressure and what would have been a sack on a play where Bruce Gradkowski rolled out. … Safety Jeromy Miles tried to strip the ball from Chris Pressley on a screen pass up the sideline but Pressley was able to break away. … A couple big gains on runs off the left side by Brian Leonard. … Thomas Weber was 5 of 6 on field goals, hitting from 26, 32, 36, 39 and 44 yards but missing from 30.

RETURN ROTATION: With both return jobs up for grabs, Saturday was the first day where kick retuners got their chance. The pairings were Cedric Peerman/Bernard Scott, Taveon Rogers/Aaron Brown and Andrew Hawkins/Marvin Jones. Tate and Kashif Moore figure to get looks sometime during camp.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “It’s going to be hotter. A lot more concrete around. You’ve got the stuff nearby that’s not really one of the best fumes in the world when you’re tired. It’s an adjustment. You’re not going to get me to complain.” – Andrew Whitworth on the differences between training camp here and when it was at Georgetown College

Hey guys, random question about training camp, if any of you could help me...I was hoping to make it down there for the Monday session at 3:15, but I literally would not be in Cincy until about 3:00 that day. As such, I can't get the tickets that are available after 10 am. Do you guys know if they will sell out by then, or should I still be able to get in? I'm coming with a buddy and unfortunately we can' t make it any sooner than 3.

Update: Padding up; Quick practice hits

Posted 6 hours ago

Geoff Hobson Editor Bengals.com

Update: 6:35 p.m.

After the Bengals finished their second practice of training camp Saturday, they wasted no time looking ahead to Sunday night's first workout in pads in a 6-8 session on the Paul Brown Stadium practice fields.

(Passes are available at the PBS North ticket window Sunday at 4 p.m. after another crowd of about 1,500 viewed Saturday's work.

Head coach Marvin Lewis may not unleash all out hitting until Monday, but as defensive tackle Domata Peko said, "When you put the pads on, it's always live in the trenches."

It will be the first time running back BenJarvus Green-Elllis wears Bengals' pads and he knows it.

"When you wear pads, it's just not the same," The Law Firm said, and offensive coordinator Jay Gruden knows what he means.

"The receivers are going to see more press coverage. See how they get off the jam," Gruden said. "Line's pad level. I want to see how (rookie right guard Kevin) Zeitler does. Everybody in pads, it's a different ballgame. Some people show up. Some people disappear.

"It happens a lot," said Gruden of receivers disappearing when the pads come on. "When you have live practices, it happens a lot."

But Gruden isn't expecting his rookie receivers to take a step backward in pads.

"They have great character and toughness based on their tapes in college," he said. "But this is a diffferent speed, and the size of the DBs and the linebackers are a little bit different."

PRACTICE HITS: Safety Reggie Nelson came up with his second interception in as many days. Friday it was Pro Bowler Andy Dalton. This time it was free-agent rookie Tyler Hansen...Safety Taylor Mays drew raves from the coaches for his coverage of wide receiver A.J. Green on one deep route. Dalton, who overthrew some long ones Saturday, did hit Green in stride down the right sideline for a long one that safety Robert Sands signaled was out of bounds....

When wide receiver Brandon Tate went in after practice he said he was going to get checked by the trainers. He barely took any snaps on offense, if at all, and didn't return kicks. But he might not have anyway since special teams coach Darrin Simmons said he saw Tate all last year and he needs to see other guys. Such as veteran wide receiver Andrew Hawkins, rookie receivers Marvin Jones, and Taveon Rogers, as well as running backs Bernard Scott, Cedric Peerman and Aaron Brown. All returned kicks Saturday..

Cornerback Adam Jones has been snake bit and has had to leave the first two workouts. On Friday it was cramps and on Saturday it was a kick in the calf while he covered a route...

With Mike Nugent nursing what is believed to be a hamstring issue, first-year kicker Thomas Weber tried the first field goals in PBS training camp history. Weber, cut by the Bengals at the end of last preseason after he didn't try a field goal, didn't hook on with another club. He's got another uphill battle with Nugent expected to be back "soon," according to Lewis.

Weber was 5 of 6, his only miss from 30 yards, and the rest were good from 26, 32, 36, 39, and 44.

GEATHERS OK: After tweaking his knee in Friday's first practice, left end Robert Geathers has joined the list of players that is not practicing but has nothing serious and should return "soon."

That's the "exclusive group" he is now in.

He joins Riall Johnson. Patrick Body, Bennie Brazell, Landon Johnson and Kevin Hardy
for other Bengals who have been mentioned in article titles but not
in the actual article.

LOL, that's classic. And talk about some names from the past... wow. Not necessarily a distinguished group of productive Bengals, but they still played in the league - although not sure if Bennie ever got in a "real" game. I believe the rest actually did, although Riall Johnson and Patrick Body didn't get much more than the proverbial cup of coffee.
