Marvin Lewis: should have been a 10 second runoff on injury with 1:07. Refs got it right at second runoff situation.[/background]

These scab officials blew the call at the 1:07 mark in a couple different ways. First of all here's the rule straight from the rulebook:

<<A team cannot buy an excess time out for a penalty. However, a fourth time out is allowed without penalty for an injured player, who must be removed immediately. A fifth time out or more is allowed for an injury and a five-yard penalty is assessed if the clock was running. Additionally, if the clock was running and the score is tied or the team in possession is losing, the ball cannot be put in play for at least 10 seconds on the fourth or more time out. The half or game can end while those 10 seconds are run off on the clock.>>

Secondly they didn't ever announce to us why they decided not to enforce it. Now why didn't Marvin throw a fit? I think he should have argued that more than he did.

The officials weren't the only folks on the broadcast who were clueless as to the rulebook. The announcers were going on and on about the Bengal special team's player (I think it was Newman) who tried to pick up a punted ball after it had been touched by the Redskins. Solomon Wilcotts should know that Newman had nothing to lose by trying to advance that ball. It was not a live ball. If a Redskin had picked it up "illegal touching" would have been called and the Bengals would retain possession

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the refs, but as I watch game after game I can't remember seeing so many helmet to helmet hits, something that seems even more remarkable when you consider all of the talk this offseason about concussions and player safety.

I'm telling ya' if it doesn't stop somebody could die....or lose part of an ear.

FWIW, the NFL acknowledges there should have been a 10-sec runoff with the injured Redskin at 1:07 Sunday.[/background]

Thanks guys for all the clarification. Luckily it didn't cost us the game.

Now NFL owners and Goodell get your fucking shit together and resolve this yesterday....

Can't put it all on them. Refs have a more than fair offer on the table.

True I should have stated both parties...... OK Both need to get their heads out of their collective asses, split it down the middle like most negotiations go and get this done.

And I don't know what the offer is on the table to say it's fair or not. What is specifically the offer they have? Versus what they already have? And what are they asking for? Or what are they giving up? I have not seen a comprehensive writeup that details all of these points.

Like I said elsewhere, Goodell is the rich man's Vince McMahon. I agree with Steve Young - the NFL doesn't care. Has anyone tuned out because of the officiating? Then why would Goodell give a shit? If anything it just adds to the drama. In pro wrestling, they have a word for it:

In professional wrestling, kayfabe (pronounced /ˈkeɪfeɪb/) is the portrayal of events within the industry as "real" or "true," specifically the portrayal of competition and rivalries between participants as being genuine or not of a worked nature.

Since Goodell took over, I think the NFL is moving closer and closer to that formula. I don't think it's 100% bullshit, not yet, but when you take his background into account along with the gambling ties to so many of the owners of premier teams, it's hard to have much faith in the product. It's entertaining, sure, but is it real?

Before the salary cap there wasn't really a need for interference; the most-profitable franchises were, for the most part, able to field the best teams. The "good guys" usually won. The salary cap was supposed to put all 32 teams on a level field. Maybe it did for a while, but Goodell is very, very skilled at manipulating things while making it seem like it's for some noble purpose.

It's about one thing; money. If shitty refs aren't costing the league money, Goodell does not give a single fuck about whether they're costing someone games. Until a bad call knocks the Cowboys out of the playoffs, it's not an issue. Maybe the owners are far-sighted enough to see that coming now, before it happens, but the money is still rolling in so I kind of doubt it. It's just part of the storyline; the "kayfabe".

Goodell's "leadership" makes me think he's aiming for an NFL where, instead of certain teams being popular because they win a lot of games, certain teams are going to win a lot of games because they are popular.

Keep in mind they only work 6 1/2 months of the year, AND get a pension. They also only work 1 day a week.

Keep in mind that they are directly and publicly responsible for the quality of a product worth billions where some of the players are making as much as they do in a year every game.

I really don't think that the refs are that much worse then the regular refs. Sure they are worse but its not a huge difference. What is different is the announcers and players and coaches and fans harping on every bad play and blaming it on the fact that these are replacement refs.
Watching the Green Bay game and the refs may have just cost the Packers the game. Seattle had the ball and it was 1 and 38. Russell Wilson throws the ball up and Sidney Rice is ALL OVER Sam Shields and they call DPI! So now its 1st and 10 from the 28. Smdh...
Could have went either way. His inside hand was all over him. This is exactly what I am talking about. Non replacement refs no one bitches at that call.
