-GoBengals-
i may be wrong, but i think the things listed in that thread were access companies/hosts, that i have, but i find it a little hard to sift through search results than torrents.. all for legal uses of course...i would never download copyrighted material... bengalrick
The hard part of usenet is the setup... After that it is pretty easy. And is much better than torrents imo. I can give you a better guide when I get home but in the meantime, some good sites that I have found to find things are: http://www.mysterbin.com/ http://www.nzbmovieseeker.com/ http://www.nzbtvseeker.com/ http://nzbmatrix.com/index.php
bengalrick
Its definitely not "easy" to set it up, but you are both techy kind of guys so you should be fine... I used this guide when I started: http://lifehacker.co...ee-simple-steps SABnzbd+ makes it pretty easy... It does most of the stuff for you.
mullichicken25
i cant recomend SABnzbd and nzbmatrix enough find and download a .nzb file with nzbmatrix (very easy to search through and find exactly what you're looking for) meanwhile, as soon as SABnzbd notices a nzb file in the designated directory it starts doing its thing. When its done, it will automatically unpack, repair, delete the temporary files, and dump the final file in a specified directory also i used UseNetServer and had 0 complaints...the cheapest one i saw and you get unlimited usage. It might not be the fastest but i ran all my shit overnight anyway
Ben
newshosting is the best provider I have used. Sabnzbd is the bees knees. It does a parity check and unrar automagically for you. No fat client to have up and running. Can check status from any network connected device.
bengalrick
mulli and Ben... You guys have any other sites that are good for searching? I haven't paid the $10 for the extras for nzbmatrix because I can usually find things through the others. But the more search sites, the better. -GoBengals-
so let me wrap my head around this.. there are: 1. hosting/service providers 2. newsreaders/programs 3. search sites/apps/templates is that correct? i signed up for usenet.net as someone has recomended it a while back.. 2, i have Unison, it has two search sites built in, but i dont know how good they are, they dont seem too awesome... as it stands ifind torrents to be MUCH better as 90% o f the files i have downloaded from usenet are .exe files and not what i was looking for.. Lewdog
All I've ever heard about newsgroups, is that they are frequently used by criminals as a way to transfer data in a very low moderated forum.
bengalrick
Go usenet.net is fine. Use this to setup: http://lifehacker.co...ee-simple-steps After that you can set SABnzbd to what folder to watch for (probably your download folder) and that program downloads, unrar's and puts the outputted file where you want it. If you don't specify it will go to the same folder. For searches, use one of the links I posted above. The best that I have found is http://www.mysterbin.com/ that is free but if you annie up 10 bucks the best is http://nzbmatrix.com/index.php. But mysterbin can find just about whatever you want. You can also filter through there for on videos that fall in a certain MB range, only complete files, etc. The initial setup can be complicated but follow the guide I posted above. USE SABNZBD. Whatever you are using now, get rid of it. I guarantee it isn't as good as SABnzbd. If you get it set up right now, you will find the file you want, click the radio button the the left of the file and click on 'selection=>NZB' at the top of the searches. Then just wait until your done and the nzb program will do everything else for you. Very easy, it will consisitantly max out whatever bandwith you have (I have only 10 mbps so I max mine at 500 kb and I still have plenty of bandwith for regular browsing. My wife can still stream her MTV stuff without any issues while this is running too). Yes you can find more things with torrents but I did torrents for the last 7 years and I will say without hesitation this is 100 times better. Safer with your ISP, more consistant downloading, less work (after the initial setup), you can find 75% of what you can on torrents, and what you can't find on torrents are odd ball things that you can still use torrents for. If I can't find something with usenet, I will download them with torrent. My ISP has threatened me though with kicking me off their plan if I get caught again downloading things so I am extremely weary of using torrents. And I have no cable and can still find anything I want. Use the guide and you will be fine

-GoBengals-
why is everything split into 1,000 different files, like an almbum is each track individually.... a comedy album is 12 files, doesnt make sense... why would anyone want that? -GoBengals-
and then there is some [1/26] type number on a group that has 15 files, what are those numbers? they arent any type of order...
bengalrick
Because that is how it works. If you use SABnzbd you won't even notice I am new to Usenet so not exactly sure about the [1/16] type of stuff... But don't click on groups. Find the file you want from the main search and then download it. Go to mysterbin and use the filters right under where it says query... Click on '100M to 1G' and '1G to 4G' and '4G +' you can also filter for audio, video etc if you want but make sure to filter by file size so most of the crap you don't want to see will go away.
Technically yes, you will be downloading a bunch of small files. SABNZbd then takes those files, unrar's them for you, and then converts it into one file that you can use. You don't have to click on 26 files, you only have to click on the main page. Don't go into groups. The only time I use groups is if I find a good copy of a TV show and want to find the rest of the season from the same poster. The reason it is broken up the way it is, is that it has to be broken into small pieces. It is the 'flaw' of the system but isn't a big deal when you get SABNZbd working properly. The biggest plus for me is that you won't get caught. Even if you do, you are not uploading and downloading at the same time like torrents. So even if you were to get in trouble, it would only be for downloading. And uploading is the part you get in trouble for by the gov't, if it ever came to that. And you are not dependant on peers/seeds. If it says it is there, you can bank on it that you will download it. Most of the time, it comes through without issue. Sometimes though, the files are incomplete and they won't work but doesn't happen often. If it keeps happening though, it is probably a setup issue. BUT if I had like 50 mbps or even 20, you could max that out and that would make a HUGE difference compared to torrents. At 10 mbps though, it only makes a small difference. Ben
You need to use the nzb files. They take care of all that for you. If you have sabnzbd setup correctly, it will download, check parity and repair(if necessary) and unrar the files.
mullichicken25
i wasnt sold on this stuff until i tried sabnzb and nzbmatrix...i used to get files that wouldnt work, or would be in the wrong language or wouldnt unpack about 60% of the time. Plus i was unpacking and moving everything myself which was a pain in the nuts when i switched it literally took the whole experience from complicated and unreliable to simple and flawless now i could just click one button on nzbmatrix and the next day the movie/show/song/file is sitting in plex waiting for me to enjoy
-GoBengals-
doing the 10 yr for $10 thing on matrix now.... without it your retention is 20 days, which is utterly pointless... i have about an hour to tinker around with SABnzb, so i will let you know how it goes... the only reason i am leaning this way is two major torrent sites got put down so torrent search dropped like 60% of the results.... which is odd since i am only looking for legally shared things.... i did find like 17+ search templates to add to my torrent search which helped about 25%, but still a huge decline... i have never not had something i wanted within an hour before... and have spent a few DAYS looking for a few easy to find things..
