Linux distributions often use torrents (keeps their servers from getting hammered). Free ebooks that are in the public domain ala Project Gutenberg. I'm sure there are some free podcasts on there as well.

Actually I found a pretty good link for those interested.

It's just like any other freedom we have, there is always going to be those that ruin it for the rest of us. Let me add that I don't think any of you are pedophiles, but you should beware that there is a highly likely chance that stuff like child pornography is on there and sometimes might be labeled something totally different than what it is. Regardless if you had intent or not, if it is downloaded on your computer, and you erase it, some say it will be on your computer forever. Nowadays there are scrubber programs that claim they can totally clean your hard drive, but is it worth the chance?

Regular torrents and programs like Limewire and others have been pretty much scrapped, so Newsgroups might be your only way to get the downloads you want. Just be careful.

I'm not sure what your doing, but you are doing it wrong. I never have issues finding stuff. You download speeds are dependent on your internet connection and the usenet host you are using.

doing the 10 yr for $10 thing on matrix now.... without it your retention is 20 days, which is utterly pointless...

i have about an hour to tinker around with SABnzb, so i will let you know how it goes...

the only reason i am leaning this way is two major torrent sites got put down so torrent search dropped like 60% of the results.... which is odd since i am only looking for legally shared things....

i did find like 17+ search templates to add to my torrent search which helped about 25%, but still a huge decline...

i have never not had something i wanted within an hour before... and have spent a few DAYS looking for a few easy to find things..

You can accidentally stumble on to child porn on go-bengals.com if someone decides to be a dick and post a pic in a gameday thread too. Or if you click on the wrong lik in google search results.

Better get off the internet.

Just trying to look out for people that didn't know better, no reason to be a dick about it. There is a big difference in maybe this and maybe that, when it is a proven fact that kiddie porn has been distributed in newsgroups. That's about the same thing as saying to make sure to look both ways before crossing an open cornfield because you might get hit by a car, versus looking both ways before crossing a street. Hey you never know, someone might be a prick and drive across an open cornfield.

i have hit some pretty impressive speeds on things i have grabbed on here so far.. hit 3.7mb/sec on one thing... barely ever hit 2.2 mb/sec on torrents before..
What is your mbps? When I set it to full throttle, I get to 1.1 MB's and I am only supposed to get 1.0... Is it still not maxing out your connection Go?

my connection is 30mb down 7mb up....

i set the limit in SAB to 10mb
I see. You should still be maxing out at 10mb. Something isn't quite right with the setup probably. Are you getting any errors on SABnzbd? (top left of page)

seems to be working properly, most of the stuff i am getting is less popular, so that may have some effect... it seems to be grabbing and putting in a completed folder in my downloads... etc..
It shouldn't matter though. You are not dependent on anyone else. You are literally downloading the content only so if it is downloading, it should be max speed.

I mean your still getting ok download speeds but I have a feeling you could still be getting better. Someone with more experience and/or knowledge might be able to help you but as you said, might not be that big of a deal since your already getting better speeds than your used to.

I'm confused on your description. Are the files uploaded and stored on a server, so that you can log on to that server and download straight to your computer without sharing bandwith? If so, the host server is surely taking a huge risk, unless it is in a country with very lax laws. The server would also have to have a kick ass firewall, with all the information it would have.

Pardon me if some of these questions seem extremely elementary. I do like to try and learn something new whenever I can.

Just noticed this question. I am not an expert on this but the way I think it works, is the files are uploaded on the servers of say forums (or newsgroups). That is why the files are so small and need to be rar'ed back to full files. Hope that helps.

Wow I am surprised anyone who is so liberal about the content on the news servers what take such a big chance of allowing anyone to upload files to their server and then allow others to download it. That would put them firmly in the middle of any copyright infringement, or any criminal offenses for other illegal content. Are the servers for the newsgroups in the US, or some other country?

Hard to say where the servers are located... They are taking almost all the risk so for good reason, they don't want to advertise where they are stationed :)

This is how it is described here: http://paulstamatiou.com/how-to-download-with-newsgroups

Newsgroups... Usenet... What is that?

Wikipedia states that Usenet is a global, decentralized, distributed Internet discussion system. Within Usenet, there are newsgroups for different types of threaded discussion, typically accessed through newsreader software. However, discussions aren't the only things taking place on Usenet newsgroups. The alt.* hierarchy of newsgroups, for example, is home to binaries newsgroups where people may upload and share various types of files and media.
Unlike BitTorrent, a popular peer-2-peer communications protocol, interacting with newsgroups only requires downloading from a server rather than downloading from peers and uploading to peers. As such, downloading through newsgroups is typically extremely fast, given a proper Usenet service provider. Also, you are only connecting to your Usenet service provider — not any peers or other computers — making Usenet much more secure.
Just to give you an idea of the speed, if you had a large queue of files to download over a typical 6 megabit Cable Internet connection, you would max out the line and exceed 2 Terabytes of bandwidth consumption in a single month. If you lived on a college campus with a fat pipe (assuming fat = 60+ Mbps), that number would be closer to 20 Terabytes. Of course, I doubt many people would realistically download 24/7 for an entire month.
For example, try this newsgroup download speed test hosted by Giganews to see what kind of speeds you can get. Note that these would be the same as actual download speeds.

Thanks for the info. With the way the government is cracking down on so many people for copyright infringement, it's silly. There was a lady that had like 100,000 songs she had downloaded, and the judge ordered her to pay the going price for all the songs. Not sure what happened with that situation. I know she sure didn't have the money. From what people have said in this thread newsgroups seem so much more difficult then torrents.

not bad, got a few things at around 5mb/sec speeds, but torrents seem to have recovered well from the issues they had, the newsgroups sometimes have more options available for one certain thing, so i am still using both... but will likely keep on with the newsgroups.. originally i was pondering canceling.
