After enduring four weeks of a spiraling, the Bengals have seized back momentum of their season with authority.
Cincinnati beat Kansas City 28-6 at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday. That marked the second consecutive blowout coming off their four-game losing streak. Last week the Bengals (5-5) beat the defending Super Bowl champion Giants 31-13.
The last time the Bengals won back-to-back games by at least 18 points was 1985. For Marvin Lewis, the recipe is simple.
"The key thing is we continue to put up touchdowns in the red zone," he said. "We continue to avoid turnovers."
After throwing at least one interception in every game this season, Andy Dalton managed a second straight clean game. He was 18 of 29 for 230 yards and two touchdowns without a pick. More important, Cincinnati scored four touchdowns in four trips to the red zone.
As the Bengals and their quarterback gather steam, the Chiefs (1-9) are in a freefall after their seventh consecutive loss. Seven of their nine losses have come by double digits.
Romeo Crennell pulled starter Matt Cassel at halftime for Brady Quinn, but neither approached serviceable. Quinn was 9 of 14 for 95 yards, and Cassel was 8 of 16 for 93 yards.
Fans, who staged a blackout in protest of ownership's failure, headed to the exits early to leave the second half played in front of a smattering of frustrated fans.
When the game turned: Facing third-and-goal from the 11-yard line and leading 7-3 in the second quarter, Dalton connected with Jermaine Gresham at the 6-yard line where he met two Kansas City defenders. The 265-pound tight end carried the two Chiefs and absorbed hits from two more as he powered his way to the goal line. The effort came up just short but allowed the Bengals to go for it on fourth down; Dalton ran for a TD, and the Bengals never looked back.
Highlight moment: A.J. Green rates the one-handed flip catch he made at UGA against Colorado as the best of his career. The grab he made for a TD in the first quarter against Kansas City may now be in the conversation. With two defenders screening him from a bullet pass from Dalton, Green extended one hand around the two, snagged the pass and kept his feet in bounds for a TD. How exactly he saw the ball, much less held onto it with one hand only adds to the growing legend of Green among the best wideouts in the NFL.
Top-shelf performances:

What they said about the Bengals back-to-back blowouts:

Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden -- “We're starting to put it all together. Momentum and confidence are a dangerous combination and right now we have that going.”

Bengals coach Lewis -- “Like a pro golfer, you can't stay on the tour if you don't do it play after play, round after round."

Bengals QB Dalton -- “It is a full team playing there. Not just one side that is doing it. We feel like we got some momentum -- now we got to keep it going.”
Numbers you should know: Kansas City finished 1 of 11 on third downs Sunday, a season low. Combine that with the 2 of 13 effort last week against Pittsburgh and the Chiefs converted only 3 of their last 24 third downs for 12.5 percent.

Record breaker: Green's first-quarter touchdown marked the ninth consecutive game with a receiving TD. That set the Bengals' single-season mark. He was previously tied with WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh. The franchise's overall mark of 10 -- spanning two seasons -- is held by Carl Pickens.
Green's nine-game, single-season streak has only been done twice in NFL history, per Elias. The last time was by Jerry Rice (12 in 1987).
Going for it: The Bengals went for it three times on fourth down and converted all three, including a 32-yard run byCedric Peerman on a fake punt. The Bengals have now converted 11 of 14 fourth-down attempts this year.
Injury update: Chiefs -- WR Dwayne Bowe injured his neck and didn't return in the second half. It was the first time he was held without a catch since 2007. ... Bengals -- CB Terence Newman sustained a concussion in the second half and did not return.

Going forward: Bengals -- The Bengals ride their wave of momentum and two-game blowout streak into the grand return of QB Carson Palmer. The storylines will be humming as the QB who demanded a trade away from the franchise comes back, but Cincinnati's chance to jump above .500 should top all those. … Chiefs -- The fans are disenchanted. The team plays disinterested. The quarterbacks are disasters. We have a clear front-runner on the chase for the No. 1 draft pick.

Game Ball I: BenJarvus Green-Ellis
For the second time this season, Green-Ellis had a 25-carry game but this one resulted in his first 100-yard game as a Bengal. Of those 25 carries, seven were for 7 yards or more.
Game Ball II: A.J. Green
The second-year receiver adds another Bengals record as he has caught touchdowns in nine straight games, which is a new single-season mark. Green finished with 6 receptions for 91 yards, including a 40-yard reception which set up the second touchdown.
Upon Further Review
It was a different look compared to seven weeks ago in Jacksonville, but the result ended up being the same – a successful fake punt and momentum.
With the Bengals trailing 3-0 midway through the first, Cedric Peerman’s 32-yard gain up the left sideline gave them momentum. They would score later in the drive on an A.J. Green 4-yard reception.
This time, Peerman took the direct snap from Clark Harris and went up the left sideline. Peerman got a good block from Brian Leonard to get some extra yardage.
Said special teams coach Darrin Simmons about the play: “We practice that play a lot against a variety of looks and it was a good job by our guys. Those guys did a good job of communicating it on the sidelines to talk through how to block it up if we got it again. It was the same basic look that we saw on the first play.”
Answering Four Downs
Stop the Chiefs running game: Jamaal Charles was effective early with 45 yards in the first quarter but as the Chiefs got further behind they went away from him. Charles ended up having 87 yards on 17 carries, which was an average of 5.1 yards per carry. Peyton Hillis had only nine yards and fumbled deep in Chiefs territory. Geno Atkins forced it and Vontaze Burfict recovered.
Stay productive in red zone and on third down: It was a perfect day in the red zone as the Bengals scored on all four trips and are 7 of 8 on touchdowns inside the 20 the last two games. Third downs though remain a work in progress. The offense converted only 4 of 14 but they get a first down on all three times they went for it on fourth down.
Continue to manage the game: The offensive strategy looked the same as last week – very efficient and workmanlike. Of the Bengals four touchdown drives, three lasted 11 plays or more. With a balanced attack, Cincinnati possessed the ball for 35 minutes, 22 seconds and were able to do what they wanted for the most part. It was also the first game where they didn’t have a turnover.
Get pressure on Cassel: Matt Cassel lasted for only the first half as he was 8 of 16 for 93 yards and didn’t have much time to throw. On the day the Bengals generated six quarterback hits and three sacks as Geno Atkins, Michael Johnson and Adam Jones each had one apiece. The Bengals were able to take advantage of a patchwork Chiefs offensive line that was without two starters.
Five Key Numbers
0: Turnovers by the Bengals, which is the first time that has happened this season.
8: Sacks by Geno Atkins this season, which ties Dan Wilkinson’s 1995 mark for sacks by a Bengals interior lineman.
3: Times out of 12 possessions that the Chiefs crossed into the Bengals’ side of the field.
4: Times this season that the Bengals have had a passer rating over 100. The Bengals have won all four.
7: Number of running backs in the Marvin Lewis era who have had a 100-yard game. BenJarvus Green-Ellis added himself to the list on Sunday.
Reedy’s Read
With a lot of people wondering if the Bengals were going to have a letdown over one of the worst teams in the league, they dominated all four quarters and basically had this one wrapped up by halftime.
It was a game where they needed to take care of business and they succeeded – a balanced offense, solid day on defense and productive day on special teams.
After a four-game losing streak, prospects have brightened again with a two-game winning streak to get to .500. Now, they just have to continue stacking wins.
Quote of Note
“We’ve won the last two and it’s not worth a darn unless we take care of business next week. We just have to keep going. We put ourselves in this situation and they just have to take it one step at a time.” – Marvin Lewis
Up Next
Vs. Oakland (1 p.m., CBS): The weeklong buildup to Carson Palmer’s long awaited return back to Paul Brown Stadium has arrived.

» The Bengals came into Sunday's game emphasizing the run and got the biggest rushing game in quarterbackAndy Dalton's 26 starts with 189 yards on 38 carries. The Bengals also kept the ball for a season-high 35:22. It was their biggest game on the ground in nearly three years when they went for 210 against the Browns in a Nov. 29, 2009 victory at Paul Brown Stadium.

"The emphasis was to rush it for 100 today," said Dalton, who finished with a triple-digit passer rating for the second straight game. "We got a lot of good looks to run the ball. We challenged the backs and the guys up front this week."

» Running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis had his first 100-yard game as a Bengal with 101 yards on 25 carries. It was Cincinnati's first 100-yard game since running back Cedric Benson nicked the Browns for 106 yards on Nov. 27 of last season. It was also Green-Ellis's first 100-yard game since he had 136 against the Jets in the fifth game of last season.

"It doesn't matter how many," Green-Ellis said. "The big thing was executing the game plan."
BJGE becomes the 14th different back to have a 100-yard game for Jim Anderson in his 29th season as the Bengals running backs coach.

» Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green said the Chiefs took away the long ball, but that allowed Cincinnati to take control in the running game. After Green caught a 40-yard bomb down the right sideline to set up the second Bengals touchdown, Green said the Chiefs dropped back into a Cover 2 zone.

Green was surprised Dalton threw him the record-breaking touchdown pass that gave him touchdowns in nine consecutive games, a club record.

"They rotated to my side late, but he put it where they couldn't get it," Green said of the double coverage.[background=rgb(0, 0, 0)]
[/background]

» Bengals tight end Jermaine Gresham, with six catches for 69 yards, had a huge day. After having an early tussle with Chiefs safety Eric Berry, Gresham played with abandon. He set up the third Bengals touchdown when he carried three Chiefs defenders to the end zone from the five-yard line on a third-and-goal from the 11. The touchdown was taken away when the booth review showed that Gresham's knee touched the ground inside the one-yard line. But it was close enough for the Bengals to convert the fourth-and-one touchdown on Dalton's one-yard run.

Gresham wouldn't comment on why Berry got him so upset but Green-Ellis said, "It always pumps you up when you see someone give second, third, fourth and fifth effort. When you see that it makes you want to play even harder."

» The Bengals held the Chiefs to one third-down conversion on 11 tries. Although Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles gained 87 yards on 17 carries, he didn't hurt the Bengals on first down. Middle linebacker Rey Maualuga praised defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer for moving nose tackle Domata Peko closer to the center. He said that helped prevent the Chiefs blockers from getting to the second level.

"I think I only had two guys on me all day," said Maualuga, who finished with five tackles.

» It was the first time the Bengals defense kept a team out of the end zone in nearly four years since a 14-0 win over Cleveland on Dec. 21, 2008.

"The Giants game gave us life," Maualuga said, referring to last week's 31-13 victory over the defending champs. "Today was a statement, too. We were coming off a good game. Would we slump and not play as well as we did? I think we answered the call."

» The Bengals were only 4-for-14 on third down but converted all three fourth-down tries in two drives in the first half that gave them touchdowns. On the first one, a fourth-and-three from the Bengals 29, Cedric Peerman ran 39 yards on a fake punt. Special teams coach Darrin Simmons said the play worked because they recognized the Chiefs had a different look than on the previous punt.

"The guys did a good job of communicating with the sideline," Simmons said.

What resulted was a play similar to the one that Peerman broke for 48 yards in Jacksonville earlier this season, but it went the other way to the left side.

It boosted Peerman to a career-high 75 yards on eight carries.
Asked about doing it so early in the game backed up, Simmons said, "That's how much confidence we have in our guys to execute the play."
» It didn't take Carson Palmer's name long to surface in the Bengals locker room now that the next game on the schedule is Palmer's Raiders next Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium in a 1 p.m. game.
"We've got Oakland and a good friend of ours, Carson Palmer, coming to town," defensive tackle Domata Peko said when asked about stringing together a run. "We were just talking about him. Getting after him. Getting our hands on him."
Peko said it's nothing personal and indicated that it's got nothing to do with Palmer's trade demand after the 2010 season that resulted in the October 2011 swap with the Raiders.
"I'm just more excited to play him because he's been with us," Peko said. "It's always fun to play against guys you know and you've been with."

A protest was organized in Kansas City, as fans were encouraged to wear black.
As fitting as that is for a funeral, they were too depressed to carry it out, as Arrowhead Stadium emptied out shortly after halftime, during a 28-6 loss to the Bengals.
The Chiefs dropped to 1-9, trying both their bad quarterbacks in an effort to capitalize on the momentum gained by a near miss at Pittsburgh last week.

NOVEMBER 18, 2012

BENGALS COACH MARVIN LEWIS
Opening statement:
“It was a good win as a football team. I thought we did good things in all three phases. We got off defensively, and we got our feet back under us a little bit after the first series. It was good to get righted, and we settled in and played and did a pretty good job the rest of the day. Offensively we did a nice job of taking care of the football. We were diligent, we kept after it, and I think again the main thing is taking care of the football. And that’s key. As a team, we have to keep looking at it. We have to get better with the penalties. We had too many penalties today and that hurt us a little bit. We just have to keep grinding.”
Offensively, was that the best balanced game you have played so far this year?
“You can’t worry about whether the game is balanced or not. We have to play on offense based on what looks we’re seeing defensively. It probably is statistically, but the thing you want to feel good about it is what you’re doing. If they’re going to sit and play certain things, then we need to be able to counter and do what we do best. Today it was a little bit of mix of things and we were able to grind in there pretty good.”
On the performance of TE Jermaine Gresham:
“He’s playing like we expect Jermaine to keep playing. He’s doing a great job. He’s really had a good season, and he’s getting better each and every week. He’s putting the team on his shoulders. He’s doing that in the running game, and he’s doing it as a receiver. This is why we got him. He’s doing a great job of it, and he keeps growing with it and he’s having fun with it. He likes to be the guy. He’s doing a good job of it.”
Was the goal this week to just take care of business?
“That was key. We knew this was going to be a grind. We can’t worry about things going on around us. We just have to take care of us. By taking care of the ball and playing sound on defense and the kicking game, that takes care of us. When we get chances at critical plays, we have to make them. We have to make the critical runs and catches down the field, the big run by Jermaine on third down and he takes it inside the half-yard line. Those are some big plays that you keep getting. Defensively, big stops, pulling the ball out again, those things keep counting. We got some good returns today. We have to keep after it and keep going.”
On winning two in a row after losing four in a row:
“It’s a long season, even though you (Cincinnati media member) beat the tar out of me, we were doing good things and we weren’t winning games. That’s all I can do is empower our guys to do more and better, that’s what my job is, until I get a new guy. And if I get a new guy, we’ll put a new guy in there. But these are the guys I have. We just have to keep going. We weren’t winning football games. We weren’t winning the game, and our guys understand that. They know their job is to win; that’s why we do this. We’ve won the last two and it’s not worth a darn unless we take care of business next week. We just have to keep going. We put ourselves in this situation and they just have to take it one step at a time.”

[img]http://prod.static.bengals.clubs.nfl.com//assets/images/imported/CIN/photos/player-headshots/2012/dalton_andy--nfl_thumb3_65_90.jpg[/img]
ANDY DALTON
What are the challenges today facing a team that you know has a record like the Chiefs had?
“For us we wanted to start fast, wanted to come out and play our best early on. We got stopped on that first drive and then we had that fake punt that was huge. It gave us the momentum going in, and from there we got on a roll. It was overall a big team win for us. We knew it was going to be tough to come in here and get the win, but we did a good job today.”
What kind of weapons do you need to have when, even though you were struggling today on third down, you can come back on fourth and generate some of those 11- and 12-play scoring drives?
“We feel like we have talent all over the field. We have been going for it a lot on fourth down because I think we have a lot of trust in the guys. Putting drives like that together are huge, that’s what you have to do to win games and we did a good job of that today.”
The fake punt, was that the strategy you had coming in?
“I think so. I didn’t even know it was called. It was great it gave us the momentum coming in from that first drive. Like I said, we wanted to start fast and that was a great way of doing it.”
A play call like that, does it give a team confidence knowing that the coaching staff believes in you?
“I think so. We wanted to jump up on them early and being aggressive is what we had to do. It was a great play call and we got a huge gain out of it.”
When you get that huge gain off the fake punt do you feel like other gains are going to come?
“Yes, special teams is a little different than offense, obviously. But we had some good looks today for some big gains and we were able to hit them. We did a great job running the ball today and when we got a chance to throw it, guys made plays.”
This team was pretty down but now you’re back in the conversation with an even record. Do you feel different about this team than you did a few weeks ago?
“For sure. We felt like we gave a couple games away; we had a four-game losing streak. That’s not what we wanted to have happen. We felt like we should have played better during that stretch. Now we have momentum. We’ve had two great wins, team wins, where everyone is doing their part and we have to keep that going during these last games.”
You mentioned good calls, your bootleg on fourth and goal was a pretty good call:
“Yes, it’s something that we have practiced and it was a perfect look. We got exactly what we wanted.”
Specifically for this game?
“Yes. We felt like we could have that advantage at that point [in the game] and it worked out exactly how we wanted it to.”
On WR A.J. Green’s touchdown:
“They tried to double him on that one, have another guy run out there and A.J. made a great play. You feel like you have to give him the chance and he’ll make the play on it, not only catching the ball but getting two feet in. It was a great play. At this point you kind of expect that from him.”
Did they dare you to run the ball the way they were playing?
“Yes. We got a lot of good looks to run it. It was great for us to come out and have the game that we did: Benny [BenJarvus Green-Ellis] getting over 100 yards, that was our goal going in, to get 100 yards rushing, and we came out and executed.”
Is that usually your goal, or was it emphasized this week?
“I think this week we really emphasized it. We wanted to get the running game going and we did. We challenged everybody up front, as well as the backs, and we did a great job.”
Was A.J. Green surprised you threw the touchdown?
“Yes. They showed that they were going to have one guy on him and then tried to run another guy out there and...touchdown. It was a great play by him, good catch.”
“Seven touchdowns in the red zone ... does it feel like things are clicking again?
“Yes, we stress getting down there and once you’re down there not kicking field goals. We have had some great play calls for what we’re seeing and it’s huge. We have to keep that going.”
What did you see on the scramble on 4th-and-seven?
“It was a man look; I went through my first progression and saw a lane. It was a big first down for us to pick up, especially on that drive. I saw it pretty quickly, everybody else was clearing out and I knew we had to make a play at that point and it opened up nicely.”
Did you assume you were going to go for it on 4th-and-inches?
“Yes, I figured we would. Getting down there I figured we knew which play we were going to call. It worked out perfectly.”
Were things chipper that usual out there?
“There’s guys always talking, but you can’t have that hurt. We can’t have stupid penalties affect us.” TE Jermaine Gresham seemed pretty fired up: “Yes, he did. A great effort by him on the almost-touchdown. He was dragging a couple guys with him; he was fired up today. It was good to see him like that.”
Was the touchdown on the bootleg a little tribute to LT [LaDainian Tomlinson]?
“Yes, I was talking about it before the game. I figured I would give LT [Ladainian Tomlinson] some love, Horned Frog love.”
The fear in a game like this is you play down to the level of competition. Was going for it on the close plays a way to allay that fear?
“I feel like he [Coach Lewis] has confidence in us. You don’t want to get lolled and to have that aggressive start kind of set the tone for the day.”

A.J. GREEN
Comments on the touchdown catch:
“It was a good ball by Andy (Dalton). I got one hand on it and both feet in. It was a great play.”
How does it feel to get your record back at 5-5?
“It is a good feeling to get it back to even. We still have a long way to go. We’ll take one game at a time, and we will see where this thing takes us.”

BENJARVUS GREEN-ELLIS
Comments on the number of carriers he received throughout the game:
“The only thing I was focused on was playing football and coming out with a ‘W.’ Over the season there have been a lot of games – a four game stretch – where I was not even playing in the fourth quarter. We were trying to come back and were not running the ball. It feels good to go out there and get some of those things under wraps.”
Were you committed to running the football today?
“Whatever plays coach calls when we are out there, it is our job as players to go out and execute them to the best of our abilities. We were able to do that. There were some times when we stalled. We can still get better. Overall, we came away with a ‘W,’ so it was a good game for us.”
Did the Chiefs dare you to run the ball based on their defensive game plan?
“In the second half they were playing some cover-three, where they were dropping the safety down on the weak side of the box, and we were still able to get some yards. Hats off to our entire line, the receivers and the backs making plays. Everyone did a good job of playing good football.”

ANDREW WHITWORTH
What was it like going against Chiefs LB Tamba Hali?
“It was a lot of fun. I consider him to be one of the best and get to play a guy like him and play like I did, I am excited about it. Next week is a new challenge.”
Was it a complete team win in all phases?
“Yeah, it was. That is really what we are preaching right now – to go out and make plays in every aspect of the game. I think that is what I am most excited about. Getting the opportunity to play team games.”
What was the emphasis when you fell behind 3-0?
“I don’t think we were worried about that at all. You have to score to win football games. Three to nothing didn’t bother us. We wanted to go out there and do the things we needed to do and shore things up. We won a team game, and now it is time to go back to the drawing board and win again.”

DOMATA PEKO
What do you think about how your defense performed today?
“We have been working really hard throughout the week, and it’s been paying off on Sundays. That’s what we want to see. Being very aggressive, attacking and getting pressure on the QBs, that’s what our plan was. We did a great job at that. We tried to control (Jamaal) Charles because he is a hell of a back. We were able to do that for the most part. We have to keep this thing going. That’s two in a row now, and we have to keep it going one game at a time.” Did the quarterback change make a difference? “We tried to attack him (Brady Quinn) the same way we did with (Matt) Cassel – put pressure in his face and force him to win the game for them. We did a great job of getting pressure today, getting some sacks, controlling (Jamaal) Charles, and we were able to get the ‘W.’”
Comments on the success of the interior defensive line:
“That was a big part of our game plan, to win up front. If we can dominate up front you know we are going to win some games. We put it on our shoulders this week to try to stop Jamaal Charles because he is an explosive guy. We did that for the most part and we were able to get after the QB’s today, too.”

[img]http://prod.static.bengals.clubs.nfl.com/assets/images/imported/CIN/photos/player-headshots/2012/gilberry_wallace--nfl_thumb3_65_90.jpg[/img]
WALLACE GILBERRY
What has clicked with this defense?
“Guys understand what they have going on. I have to do a better job. I am the new guy on the block but feel like I am doing good. It feels good.”
Comments on shutting down the Chiefs offense?
“That’s how it’s been the past two weeks. The secondary has been standing up. We feel, up front, if the quarterback is patting the ball, we should be in his face. As long as we are on the same page on defense we should be good.”

CHIEFS COACH ROMEO CRENNEL
Initial comments:
“It was a disappointing game from my standpoint. I expected us to do better than we did, particularly coming off the Monday night effort, and we ended up giving up yardage, giving up points, couldn't move the ball offensively. So, I changed the quarterback and tried to generate some offense that way. It really wasn't enough, so that's why the score is what it is. I'm not feeling very good at this point.”
On WR Dwayne Bowe's status and other injuries:
“Bowe has a neck, and they're evaluating his neck to see exactly what it is. Branden Albert had a back, fell on his back, so we're evaluating that. [Tony] Moeaki came out but then he went back in. I think he's going to be okay. And then we missed [Ryan] Lilja today because of his knee. So, we had to put other people in the game and we did.”
If QB Brady Quinn was healthy enough to suit up, why not start him over Matt Cassel?
“Because I wanted to start Cassel, so I started Cassel. When I felt like I needed to make a change, I made the change to Quinn. So, Quinn got into the game in the second half, and then after this I will evaluate it and I will let you know what I am going to do next week.”
On the shuffling of the offensive line and how it impacted the game:
“I did not know how much I would be mixing and matching until I got here today. I'm not making excuses about the offensive line, but when you have guys that don't practice together on a consistent basis, it's hard for everybody to be on the same page. But this is pro football and you have to perform.”
On OL Donald Stephenson switching sides:
“He played those spots [both right and left tackle]. We'll evaluate the tape and find out how he did.”
On the Bengals fourth-down conversions:
“Well, they beat us on the fake punt. We weren't alert enough to make the play, and that gave them some juice and that hurt our team.”
On the bootleg play. Was that something you hadn't seen?
“That was 4th-and-one on the goal line. A lot of times you think they're going to run for the one and forget to remember that he could keep it.”
How much practice time did Quinn get this week?
“He got the normal backup practice time. Minimal.”
Did you see any signs today that these guys were trying to eliminate bad football?
“Not as much as I need to see.”
What did you think of the crowd today?
“I focused on the game and didn't get into the crowd. I thought that the guys [fans] were trying to help us on third down. I heard crowd noise on third down, so every time I can get that I appreciate it.”
Were you satisfied with the number of touches RB Jamaal Charles got?
“Yes.”
Do you have more things to do (similar to removing yourself from the defensive coordinator spot) to shake things up?
“We will evaluate it and we will determine if there's anything else we can do.”
Why haven't all the changes you've made worked so far, specifically in term of wins?
“That's the key – to get wins. We haven't gotten wins, and so until we get some wins whatever we do doesn't make any difference.”
Despite the lack of wins, do you see the team improving?
“Well, it just depends whether you want wins or not. If wins are the thing, then we don't have any wins, so we aren't improving enough.”

MATT CASSEL
It was one of those days, huh:
“Yep. It was definitely a tough day. Obviously, as a team we didn’t perform the way we wanted to. It was a tough day, I’m guessing for me as well, is what you’re going to ask next. I wasn’t anticipating it. We came in at half time and Coach Crennel said he wanted to create a spark, so he was going to make a change at the quarterback position.”
You said you weren’t anticipating it [the quarterback change]?
“No, I wasn’t anticipating that at half time, coming in after we went down and put three points on the board. But, Coach Crennel made the decision and that’s how it went.”
Did [Coach Crennel] say why?
“He said he wanted to create a spark for the team.”
Did you have a direct conversation with Romeo about why he pulled you?
“He did. He pulled myself and Brady over and said that he felt like the team needed a spark and was going to make a change at the quarterback position.”
How does that work?
Can you argue your case at all or was that it? “That was it, and we were moving forward.”
Is this the thing going forward? Is Brady the starter?
“I’m guessing so.”
You guys practice hard. What is not translating out there?
“You know, it’s hard to say. We just have to do a better job. I can’t pinpoint one thing right now. Every week it’s something different. Obviously, we haven’t played well this season. We need to continue to get better and try to figure this thing out.”
The offensive line was kind of pieced together with glue and Band-Aids, guys moving all over the place. How difficult does that make it for an offense?
“I think those guys were asked to step in and step up on short notice. We didn’t know that everyone was going to be shuffled around like that. I thought those guys, for the most part, did a good job stepping in and fulfilling that role – especially on such short notice.”
What does it take to develop chemistry with your center?
“I was comfortable with Russ [Hochstein]. He was my center when I was back in New England. He did a great job today. He got the calls going on, and he got those guys going the right direction.”
Does this feel like Groundhog days for you guys?
“It’s frustrating. We’re all frustrated. I’m sure the fans are frustrated. Everybody in this building is frustrated. We don’t want to go out and perform like that. We don’t want to lose like that. We want to be competitive and win games. We not only want to do it for ourselves, we want to do it for the fans. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to do that this season.”
Do you feel like this is it for you in Kansas City? Is this the feeling you have?
“I’m not going to go into that right now. Again, it was a quarterback change for the second half. I don’t know what my future holds, but I’m going to continue to be the same guy like I’ve told you guys all along. I’m going to continue to work hard and do whatever I can to help this team win.”
Do you feel as this team looks for answers, guys are giving up?
“I don’t think that. I don’t think we’re giving up one bit. You know, it’s a testament to the guys’ character in here. Everybody works hard. We go out to practice each and every day and try to get better. That’s the character of these guys, but at the same time, we’ve got to start getting wins around here.”

DERRICK JOHNSON
What can you say about the Chiefs defensive performance today?
“We have to start faster. In this league, you go out there flat, they get the edge. They capitalized off our mistakes today.”
Why did you start off flat?
“Who knows? There are no excuses for how we played today. We just have to play better. That starts with myself.”
Can you talk more about the game today?
“I felt like we had a good game plan. I felt like everybody was up, energetic and ready to go. For whatever reason, we didn’t put the pieces together. They didn’t do much gameplan-wise different from what we practiced all week. They just played a lot better than us today.”
Do you feel like everybody is giving 100 percent effort?
“Yeah. We haven’t watched film yet, but I don’t think the effort part is the issue. As a team, we’re not playing together. That’s been the M.O. for the year. We’re just not being consistent enough playing all four quarters.”

DEXTER MCCLUSTER
How does a quarterback change in the middle of the game affect the offense?
“When you have a quarterback switch, it really doesn’t affect you. We get work with both of those guys. You still have to stick to the same game plan, go out there and continue playing.”
When did you find out Brady Quinn would start the second half?
“I actually found out when we were supposed to take the field, so it was kind of short notice, but it’s the game of football. You have to be ready for change.”
How does the amount of changes on the offensive line affect you?
“We had some guys go down, but like I said before, this is the game of football. You have to be ready for change and be able to handle it. Honestly, being a wide out, it really doesn’t affect us as much. It’s those guys (the offensive linemen) getting the calls and working with each other. Again, we practice it all week. We practice different scenarios, so we’re ready for each situation.”

SHAUN SMITH
Did you notice the empty seats in the stands?
“I’m different from a lot of guys. Being a 10-year veteran, I see a lot out there. I look at everything. It [the smaller crowd] is not a big deal because a true fan is going to stick by you regardless. That’s just the nature of the game. You can’t win them all, but as long as guys are continuing to fight, I have no problem with it because you aren’t going to win every game. As long as the rest of my teammates keep coming out, coming to work and fighting, we should be all right.”
Did the fans making a statement with the black shirts bother you?
“As a fan, things happen. You look at it, every year you go into the offseason saying this is our year. But truthfully, out of 32 teams, how many teams are going to be playing for the Super Bowl? Two teams at the end of the year. So it’s a goal that everybody tries to set, but when you’re not winning, you can’t reach that goal. We can’t worry about what the fans say or do. We can’t worry about any of that. We have to continue to play and execute the game plan.”

BRANDON FLOWERS
The 40-yarder that setup the touchdown, do you think he pushed off?
“Receivers push off. DBs will try to grab. They don’t call it. You can’t say, ‘They pushed off or this or that.’ We’re out there competing. He’s going to try to do what he needs to do to get open, and I’ve got to prevent him from getting open.”
Does this feel like Groundhog days for you guys?
“Just get tired of losing – especially at home. We’ve just got to find a way to win. It’s as simple as that.”
Can a team forget how to win?
“No. You can never forget how to win. We’ve just got to go out there and make it happen and stop feeling sorry for ourselves. We’ve got to put this loss behind us and do what we’ve got to do to get a win.”
You won just three of your last 15 games here at Arrowhead. First of all, is that surprising? Second, why?
“It’s definitely surprising. Being here the playoff year, we only lost one game at Arrowhead. If you don’t go out there and execute, that’s going to happen. We just can’t come out here saying, ‘We play in Arrowhead so we’re going to get a victory.’ At the end of the day, we’ve got to win. It’s as simple as that.”
Derrick [Johnson] said earlier that you guys aren’t playing together all of the time. Is that true?
“To be honest, I don’t know what it is. It’s hard to pinpoint one thing. We just have to win.”

ERIC WINSTON
You didn’t expect to play both today did you?
“You never know. That’s the way it goes in this league sometimes. I’ve spotted in before at left guard for a couple of plays once in my career. I’ve done a lot. That’s what happens when injuries mount, and we’re deep in the season. You’ve got to be willing to go in there and scrap it out.”
You knew it was going to be a patchwork offensive line going in and then Branden goes down. So, you’ve got to re-patch the patch. How did that impact what you guys wanted to do on offense today?
“Well, it’s tough. I don’t know how much it changed the play calling or anything. You’ve got to ask the coaches about that. But, you go out there and try to execute. You try to do what you can with what you’ve got. I think we’ve got some good rookies. I think Donald and Jeff. Jeff’s been playing for a while. I think they’ve got a lot of ability, but once the proverbial bullets start flying and you get in there, you’ve got to show up. Now they’re up and it’s their turn. I don’t know what the injury situation is with anyone else. But, when it’s your turn – that’s how I got into this league – you’ve got to show up.”
Cassel said earlier that he got benched because coach wanted to add a spark with Brady Quinn. Did you sense a spark at all?
“I felt we moved the ball OK early on. We couldn’t get much going. I think we couldn’t get much going the whole game. I don’t know if it was the quarterbacks or the lines – probably all of us to be honest with you. I look at me first. They can make the decisions about quarterback.”
In a losing season like this, is it hard for players to lose focus and maybe not execute to their fullest potential?
“I would hope not. Is it possible? Sure, anything is possible. But, I would hope not. At the end of the day, we’re pros whether we’re 9-1 or 1-9. You’ve have to come to work every day, and you have to execute.”
Does this feel like Groundhog days for you guys?
“It’s been a tough season. I can’t say that turnovers killed us. Obviously, we had the one turnover that caused some points. But, we’ve got to do our job. We’ve got to move the ball. We’ve got to run the ball. We’ve got to protect.”

Notes: Gresham flexes muscles

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — While A.J. Green andGeno Atkins continue their assault on the Pro Bowl as arguably the NFL's two best players at their position, Jermaine Gresham is quietly showing in his third season why the Bengals thought he can be one of the best tight ends in the league.
Gresham capped off an eventful three weeks Sunday when he tortured the Chiefs in the middle of the field with six catches for 69 yards, but that's not the half of it. His 10-yard catch on third-and-goal from the Kansas City 11 swung the game when he dragged three Chiefs into the end zone after taking a throw over the middle at the 5-yard line.
Replay overturned the touchdown when the refs said Gresham's knee touched just inside the 1, but it set up quarterback Andy Dalton's easy touchdown on fourth-and-one to give the Bengals a 14-3 lead midway through the second quarter.
Not to mention pumping up his teammates.
"It always pumps you up when you see someone give second, third, fourth and fifth effort. When you see that it makes you want to play even harder," running back BenJarvus Green Ellis said.
Gresham politely declined talking after the game, but he was clearly motivated after he got in a dustup with strong safety Eric Berry early in the game after the whistle that involved jawing and shoving.
"A great effort by him on the almost-touchdown," Dalton said. "He was dragging a couple guys with him; he was fired up today. It was good to see him like that.”
If Gresham continues to put up these numbers, he'll be entering Bengals royalty with 67 catches for 827 yards, the best for both by a tight end since Dan Ross had 71 catches and 910 yards for the 1981 AFC champs. With 80 more yards, Gresham passes his career-best of 596 yards last season. Last week he had a third-down leaping touchdown catch against the Giants and two weeks ago he became the first Bengals tight end since Tony McGee in 1995 to have a 100-yard game.
"He’s playing like we expect Jermaine to keep playing; he’s doing a great job," head coach Marvin Lewis said. "He’s really had a good season, and he’s getting better each and every week. He’s putting the team on his shoulders. He’s doing that in the running game, and he’s doing it as a receiver. This is why we got him. He’s doing a great job of it, and he keeps growing with it and he’s having fun with it. He likes to be the guy. He’s doing a good job of it.”
FOURTH AND GO: No one wanted to talk about the fourth-and-three fake punt that stirred the Bengals Sunday and sparked their run of 21 unanswered points in the first half.
Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis wouldn't say why he decided to pull it backed up on his own 29 and trailing, 3-0, with 6:51 left in the first quarter and when asked if the Chiefs had changed their look from the Bengals' first punt of the game, running back Cedric Peerman offered, "It could have been, but maybe not."
What we know is that Peerman did what he did the last time they on the road back on Sept. 30 in Jacksonville. Standing in front of punter Kevin Huber as his personal protector, Peerman took a short angled snap from long snapperClark Harris and took off on a long run. This time it was 32 yards around the left side. In Jacksonville it was 48 around the right side.
"Just communication, guys doing their job and hope it works out," Peerman said.
Special teams coach Darrin Simmons did say Peerman and his players responded with good communication before the snap and that they did get a different look from the Chiefs' punt return team.
What is also clear is running back Brian Leonard's block on the perimeter sprung him for more than the first down.
But the Bengals needed another fourth-down conversion three play later with seven yards to go from the Chiefs 36. Lewis didn't like the crosswind and eschewed the 54-yard field goal, and Dalton made it work when he made a quick, decisive move out of the right side of the pocket and sprinted 11 yards untouched to the opposite side of the field.
"It was a man look; I went through my first progression and saw a lane," Dalton said. "It was a big first down for us to pick up, especially on that drive. I saw it pretty quickly, everybody else was clearing out and I knew we had to make a play at that point and it opened up nicely.”
That play set up the first touchdown and the next one, the fourth-and-one made possible by Gresham, was another easy run for Dalton after faking left to Green-Ellis and running untouched to the pylon for the Bengals' second touchdown and 14-3 lead.
Lewis said there was no hesitation to go for it with 7:54 left in the first half because the Bengals had the Chiefs backed up.
"I figured we would," Dalton said. "Getting down there I figured we knew which play we were going to call. It worked out perfectly.”
PALMER NEXT: Defensive tackle Domata Peko said the name of former Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer surfaced quickly in the post-game locker room. Left tackle Andrew Whitworth knows why with Palmer's Raiders at Paul Brown Stadium in Sunday's 1 p.m. game.
But he doesn't think there's going to be a lot of talk about how Palmer wanted out with a trade demand.
"Even when you see Shaun Smith out there today it's good to see him," said Whitworth of the former Bengal playing some defensive tackle for the Chiefs. "You enjoy playing against guys that used to be here and that competitive spirit will be there.
"At this point in the season we've got a lot to achieve and our goals are in front of us and our main thing is to get a win. It will be nice to just to play against him," Whitworth said. "It's going to be a neat experience for everybody to play against a guy that was such a staple here, such a key player here for the franchise. That always makes it fun."

Running back to daylight at .500

BenJarvus Green-Ellis
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bengals running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis is known as a stickler for game-plan details, so during this past week he stopped head coach Marvin Lewis in the locker room for a quick review of the offense's three goals for Sunday's game against the Chiefs.
"Coach, I know two of them and I'm trying to remember that third one," Green-Ellis said, and it turned out that two out of three ain't bad because with BJGE's help the Bengals reached 100 yards rushing with no turnovers in the 28-6 victory at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Bengals didn't reach 45 percent converting third downs when they only went four of 14. But it doesn't matter when you hit 100 percent on three fourth-down tries and have your biggest rushing day in 47 games and nearly three years with 189 yards on 38 carries. Green-Ellis celebrated his first 100-yard day as a Bengal (101 on 25 carries) and the team's first dating back to Nov. 27 last year by talking about the upcoming Wednesday's practice.
"We're starting to impose our will a little bit and that's what you have to do in the run game," left tackle Andrew Whitworth said after another command performance against an elite pass rusher. "We're having people confident, having people where they're supposed to be and I think it's really helping us."
Lewis prefers the intramural discussion of goals and will because he doesn't want his players thinking about anybody else. Suddenly the Bengals are the AFC's only 5-5 team after winning two straight and are a game back in the wild card chase behind the 6-4 Steelers and Colts with six games left and the tiebreakers daunting but not mathematically impossible.
"We can’t worry about things going on around us," Lewis said. "We just have to take care of us. By taking care of the ball and playing sound on defense and the kicking game, that takes care of us."
He should have added the running game because, don't kid yourself; Lewis is a devout AFC North believer in how a solid running game makes everything around it better. And Lewis's best player can sense it even though he catches the ball for a living and, at the moment, better than anyone in the game.
"I feel like everybody is playing well in all three phases," wide receiver A.J. Greensaid after another YouTube touchdown catch. "This is the time you want to get momentum on your side heading into the playoffs. You saw what the Giants did last year. We feel like we're the same kind of team. That we can go on a roll and make something happen."
Green made it happen as he made the Chiefs bounce in and out of coverages. Remember, Kansas City head coach Romeo Crennel is the same guy that as head coach of the Browns formed a Cover 2 that was the most frustrating and effective AFC North defense against the Bengals in the Carson-Chad-T.J. heyday of 2005-06.
But this time the Bengals had Green, tight end Jermaine Gresham, and a commitment to the run. In the biggest running game of the 26-game era of Green and Dalton, the Bengals piled up their most rushing attempts since the next-to-last game of the 2010 season,
"The big key is today we ran the ball," Dalton said. "Some time they had to get out of that Cover 2 look. And that gave some opportunity to get the ball downfield for me."
Green thought his 40-yard bomb down the right sideline early in the second quarter came against quarters coverage. Then he said the Chiefs switched to Cover 2, and with Gresham mauling Kansas City in the middle for 69 yards on six catches, Green-Ellis saw the safety moving into the box on the weak side in the second half and he said the Bengals "were still able to make plays."
The way Whitworth saw it, "We threw it early and got ourselves a lead and we were able to pound it out."
The Bengals went up early and opened up the running game with the help of the incomparable Green. He gave them the lead for good late in the first quarter when he somehow caught a four-yard fade for a touchdown in a double coverage maze when Dalton threw it where only Green could get it, which turned out to be inches inbounds as he somehow clung to the ball two-stepping with geometry.
But then, Green inventing his own angles is now becoming commonplace. Just ask cornerback Javier Arenas and safety Kendrick Lewis. Geometry combined with physics since the 6-4 Green's advantage over the 5-9 Arenas played into the snap that gave Green the club season record for nine straight games with a touchdown catch.[background=rgb(0, 0, 0)]
[/background]

"The craziest thing is they rotated to my side real late," Green said. "I was lucky enough that Andy threw the ball in a place where I could only make the play … the corner had outside leverage. I just tried to give him a little move at the line and got past him and I saw the ball and I saw the safety getting over the top. And it was in a great spot."
The box score line is becoming ho-hum typical. The final count was one TD, 91 yards, six catches, and bottomless humility.
"What was that record again?" he asked. "Oh, good."
Dalton had another alert and accurate day, posting his second straight triple-digit passer rating with no interceptions and two more touchdown passes to give him 20, tying last year's mark. He was sacked twice, once by Chiefs sack ace Tamba Hali. But they were both of the coverage variety as Whitworth outmuscled the dangerous Hali all day on the pass rush and made certain he didn't knock out a second AFC North quarterback in six days.
It's no coincidence that Cincinnati's two best running games of the year this week and last have fused with red zone success.
In his last eight trips inside the 20-yard line starting with last week's arrow route to slot receiver Andrew Hawkins, Dalton has produced seven touchdowns with four touchdown passes and he took one in himself on fourth and less than a yard on an untouched play-action keeper Sunday.
"We got a lot of good looks to run it. It was great for us to come out and have the game that we did. Benny getting over 100 yards, that was our goal going in, to get 100 yards rushing, and we came out and executed," Dalton said. “I think this week we really emphasized it. We wanted to get the running game going and we did. We challenged everybody up front, as well as the backs, and we did a great job.”
Not only did Green-Ellis break the barrier, but little used Cedric Peerman is no longer little used and is turning into a nice change-of-pace back with a career-high 75 yards. Yes, one came on a 32-yarder off a fake punt, but he still got six yards per carry from scrimmage on seven other rushes for 43 yards.
"He gives us some speed; he's a tough guy that runs hard," Whitworth said. "People don't see it, but I thought since the Pittsburgh game (Oct. 21) that we've run the ball efficiently. Maybe not a lot, but efficiently."
The offense is getting into sync with rookie center Trevor Robinson, who made his third start Sunday, first on the road and first against one of those massive 3-4 nose tackles. But Chiefs first-round pick Dontari Poe had just two tackles and the 346-pound Poe's one quarterback hit (of Kansas City's total of three) came on the first series off a stunt, and that appeared to get cleared up because it didn't happen again.
"It was a chore for me all day," the 305-pound Robinson said. "He's a good player. I gave him 50 pounds. You have to be quicker. You have to try and mix up things on him to make sure he's feeling something different a little bit. He's a much stronger guy. If you try to be as strong as a guy stronger than you, you run into trouble. So you have to be the quicker guy."
As usual, Green-Ellis didn't much care that he had his first 100-yard game since getting 136 for the Patriots on Oct. 9, 2011 against the Jets.
"I don't care whatever it is," BJGE said. "100, 200, 25, 80. As long as we win I'm happy with it."
A lot of times, the running game isn't about the numbers.
"You hear a lot about being balanced," Robinson said. "That doesn't mean running and throwing the ball the same amount of time. It means being able to do what you need to do to win the game. If they give you looks that let you run the ball, you better be able to run the ball. Same thing when they stack guys in the box. You have to be able to throw the ball."
With Green and Dalton, the Bengals can certainly throw it. The run is what worries them over the last six games.
"I don't think about runs," BJGE said when asked about going on a winning streak. "I think about one day at a time, one game at a time. I'm excited to get back to practice Wednesday and focus on the Oakland Raiders."
No doubt Lewis going to agree with him the next time he sees him in the locker room.

The Rise Of Bengals Rookie WR Mohamed Sanu

If life were represented with arrows on God's spreadsheet, Bengals rookie wide receiver Mohamed Sanu would have several green-colored arrows pointing northward. Whether it's an injury to Armon Binns or Andrew Hawkins, Sanu has enjoyed an exponential increase of playing time lately in Cincinnati's offense. During his first five games this year (sat during both games against Cleveland), Sanu only participated in 49 total offensive snaps combined. Against the New York Giants and Kansas City Chiefs -- ironically during Cincinnati's two-game winning streak (not that we're actually making that connection) -- Sanu has accumulated 105 offensive snaps, more than doubling the previous five games.
Though only targeted 10 times against the Giants and Chiefs combined, Sanu has posted six receptions for 69 yards receiving and, more importantly, a touchdown in each game. But that's the point. Making critical conversions. Four of Sanu's six receptions against the Chiefs and Giants have converted third and fourth downs, including two in the redzone that led to both of Sanu's touchdowns.
The beauty of Sanu's fourth quarter touchdown against the Chiefs was how much he dominated the route off the line of scrimmage, with a simple out-step that generated separation against cornerback Brandon Flowers.

Dalton floated the football to Sanu in stride, catching the pass nine yards shy of the endzone, easily scoring a touchdown to give Cincinnati a 28-6 lead.

Dalton, Green lead Bengals past Chiefs, 28-6

By DAVE SKRETTA
The Associated Press
KANSAS CITY, Mo. —

The Bengals had been written off just two weeks ago, when they were slogging their way through four straight losses that had cynics everywhere saying same 'ol Cincy.
How things can change after just a couple of victories.
The first came against the Super Bowl champion New York Giants, the kind of win that causes people to start paying attention. The second came Sunday, a 28-6 rout of the woefully inept Kansas City Chiefs that has thrust Cincinnati right back into the playoff hunt.
Especially with four straight upcoming games against marginal competition.
"We felt like we gave a couple of games away," said Andy Dalton, who threw four TD passes against the Giants and accounted for three more against the Chiefs.
"We had a four-game losing streak. We should have played better during that stretch. But now we've got momentum, and we've got to keep it going. We've had two great wins, full-team wins with everybody doing their part, and we've got to keep that going throughout these last six games."
Dalton threw for 230 yards, with touchdown tosses to A.J. Green and Mohamed Sanu, and also ran for a score. BenJarvus Green-Ellis had 101 yards rushing and another touchdown as the Bengals (5-5) handed the struggling Chiefs (1-9) their seventh straight defeat.
"There have been a lot of games — a four-game stretch — where I was not even playing in the fourth quarter," Green-Ellis said. "We were trying to come back and were not running the ball. It feels good to go out there and get some of those things under wraps."
The Chiefs sure wish they knew how that felt.
Jamaal Charles had 87 yards rushing, but that was the only highlight for a team whose only win this season required a franchise-record 18-point comeback to beat New Orleans.
Arrowhead Stadium was only about half-full most of the game, and a good portion of those who showed up were dressed in black — a grass-roots effort organized by fans who have been trying to pressure team ownership to clean out the front office.
"I focus on the game. I don't get into the crowd," Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said.
Perhaps he should have let his eyes wander.
What happened on the field didn't put him in a very good mood.
Dalton and Green shredded Crennel's porous pass defense, Green-Ellis pounded away at a front line that had played better of late, and a middle-of-the-road Cincinnati defense looked like an iron curtain against a Kansas City offense that has been an utter failure.
The result: The Bengals are back to .500, and eying back-to-back postseason appearances for only the second time in franchise history, while the Chiefs have dropped seven straight games in a single season for the first time since Oct. 5-Nov. 23, 2008.
"We aren't babies. We know that when we aren't winning fans are going to get mad," Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers said. "We've got to find a way to turn this thing around."
The Chiefs struck first for the second straight week Sunday, turning several nice runs by Charles into a 34-yard field goal by Ryan Succop, before reality set in.
The Bengals converted two fourth downs, one on an audacious faked punt, and Dalton capped the drive with a 5-yard fade pass to Green, who managed to stab the ball with one hand and then slap both feet into the end zone before falling out of bounds.
Peyton Hillis fumbled on the Chiefs' ensuing possession, their league-leading 31st turnover, and Cincinnati made it 14-3 later in the second quarter on Dalton's short TD run.
The Bengals' most impressive drive of the game came after they forced the Chiefs to punt for the third straight time, an 11-play, 78-yard masterpiece in which they faced third down once.
Ellis capped that one off with a short touchdown plunge for a 21-3 lead.
Matt Cassel deftly led the Chiefs to a field goal in the closing seconds of the half, but Crennel elected to put backup Brady Quinn into the game at quarterback to start the third quarter.
Cassel sustained a concussion earlier this season, and then lost his job to Quinn, who was active for the first time since sustaining his own concussion Oct. 28 against Oakland.
Quinn didn't fare much better leading the Kansas City offense, and the Bengals tacked on Sanu's touchdown catch in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
"Everyone in this building is frustrated," Cassel said. "We don't want to go out and perform like that. We don't want to lose like that. We want to go out and compete and win games."
NOTES: Bengals CB Terence Newman left with a concussion. Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe (neck) and left tackle Branden Albert (back) also were hurt. ... The Bengals were 3 for 3 on fourth down. ... DT Geno Atkins forced two fumbles, had a sack and led Cincinnati with six tackles. ... Cassel and Quinn combined to go 17 of 30 for 188 yards.

09:30 CIN @ KC Analysis!
- In a comfortable win for the Bengals, nobody stood out more than Geno Atkins (+8.9). The best grades after that belonged to Andre Smith (+3.4) and A.J. Green (+2.0).
- The Bengals offensive line gave up just five pressures on 34 dropbacks.
- This week Mohamed Sanu matched the 33 routes run of A.J. Green for a joint lead of the receivers. Brandon Tate managed 21 with Andrew Hawkins out, while Armon Binns (5) and Ryan Whalen (7) both got some playing time.
- In a lackluster Chiefs effort some managed to impress. Jamaal Charles (+2.8) led the way, followed by Abram Elam (+2.2) and Jeff Allen and Eric Winston (+1.9).
- Tyson Jackson managed his first quarterback pressure since Week 17 of the 2011 season when he sacked Andy Dalton with 8:51 to go in the 2nd. As you’d expect Jackson didn’t beat a man to make it, rather cleaning up after Andy Dalton attempted to scramble out of the pocket.
- Dexter McCluster led the team with 30 routes, five more than Steve Breaston who himself had three more than Terrance Copper. Devon Wylie (12) and Dwayne Bowe (10) both saw some action, though neither caught either of the two targets thrown their way.

I can honestly say the last two games were enjoyable to watch. Some great stuff happening on the field! Sanu needs to be the #2, and I'm loving Gresham getting more time with the ball.

The Great Jermaine Gresham Third Down Conversion

It's not often that we dedicate an entire post for a single play in the second quarter, unless it directly affected some big-picture meaning in regards to the outcome (aka, a touchdown play). But there is one that we wanted to highlight. A simple third down conversion from a guy that's long since been victimized from huge expectations since being drafted during the 2010 NFL draft.
The Cincinnati Bengals, winning 14-3 by the 4:30 mark in the second quarter, have third and seven from their own 24-yard line. Chiefs defensive end Tamba Hali had given Andrew Whitworth some trouble on Sunday, even generating a quarterback sack at one point. So offensive coordinator Jay Gruden put Gresham outside Whitworth's left shoulder, nearest to Hali.

Gresham stayed in, playing pass protection mode while Whitworth shadowed the block during his own drop, naturally developing Andy Dalton's pocket.
However Gresham didn't just block Hali; he literally shoved the defensive end down, taking him completely out of the play.

A bored Whitworth stoically-posed himself between Hali and Dalton while Gresham flared out into his route, completely uncovered. At the same time A.J. Green was running an in-route from left to right, forcing Kansas City's secondary to focus on the zone-clearing route. Gresham turned his head, waved, doing everything he can to get Dalton's attention.

It worked.
Gresham hauled in the football, picking up 11 yards on the pass and converting the third down, sustaining a drive that would eventually result in a touchdown that would give Cincinnati a 21-3 second quarter lead.
Maybe in the end it was a big-picture play that led to Cincinnati's expanding lead. It was an all-around performance of perfection for Gresham, not only removing Kansas City's best pass rusher from the play, but generating a first down on third and seven.
Not bad kid, not bad at all.
Gresham finished the game with 69 yards receiving on six receptions, playing well during a three-game stretch dating back to his 100-yard performance against the Denver Broncos. The third-year tight end is on pace for 69 receptions for 827 yards receiving.
