wish I had the money to blow on one of these.

I'm not sure what I would use it for. I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I used my laptop. If I'm doing serious work/gaming, I use my desktop. For absolutely everything else, I'd rather use my pad or phone.

This is how I feel as well.. I think the "Laptop" is going the way of the dodo. I still love my desktop, but when I buy a new portable (which will be soon) it will be a pad. I haven't felt the need until recently when they have really matured.

Probably right on the laptop front though I will be the exception to that rule. I sit behind a desk all day and really don't feel like that when I'm home, so I'd rather use a laptop. I've looked at the iPads, but all of our pictures and music are on the laptop and no tablet has enough drive space to hold them all.

I could get a bigger NAS and store it all there but the wife keeps balking at the cost for what I want...

Windows 8: A ‘Christmas gift for someone you hate’

Microsoft (MSFT) is no stranger to criticism these days, and the company’s new Windows 8 platform is once again the target of a scathing review from a high-profile user. Well-known Internet entrepreneur and MIT professor Philip Greenspun handed Windows 8 one of its most damning reviews yet earlier this week, calling the new operating system a “Christmas gift for someone you hate.” Greenspun panned almost every aspect of Microsoft’s new software, noting that Microsoft had four years to study Android and more than five to examine iOS, but still couldn’t build a usable tablet experience.

“The only device that I can remember being as confused by is the BlackBerry PlayBook,” Greenspun wrote on his blog after using Windows 8 on a Dell (DELL) XPS One All-in-One desktop PC. The acclaimed computer scientist noted that Microsoft omitted all of the best features from the most popular touch-focused platforms and instead created a user interface he describes as a “dog’s breakfast.” :pointlaff:

“Suppose that you are an expert user of Windows NT/XP/Vista/7, an expert user of an iPad, and an expert user of an Android phone… you will have no idea how to use Windows 8,” Greenspun wrote.

He continued, “Some functions, such as ‘start an application’ or ‘restart the computer’ are available only from the tablet interface. Conversely, when one is comfortably ensconced in a touch/tablet application, an additional click will fire up a Web browser, thereby causing the tablet to disappear in favor of the desktop. Many of the ‘apps’ that show up on the ‘all apps’ menu at the bottom of the screen (accessible only if you swipe down from the top of the screen) dump you right into the desktop on the first click.”

The only praise Greenspun offered was that “some of the supplied apps are wonderful,” pointing to Microsoft’s Bing Finance application as an example.

You don't already have these backed up elsewhere? Do you need all your photos to be portable? You can get an external USB DVD burner for less than $100. Music is a PITA to replace but photos are just.. gone. Wouldn't recommend entrusting the family photo albums to a laptop HD.

I've got everything backed up to multiple HDD's in multiple locations and one cloud provider (Backblaze). I just don't have a NAS big enough to hold everything in one place for streaming via DLNA or other protocol and it's less than convenient dealing with hodge-podge so the bulk when I need to access for syncing and the such is still on the MBP...

I sold my laptop and honestly don't think I need one again. I can do everything on my iPad. I think I'm going to do what you are doing and get a desktop for the home use.

It's part of my solution to Elflocko's issue. I keep all photos, music, and video on th desktop. Then I just stream it to pads, pods, and apple TVs... The only downside is I have to keep the desktop on all the time.

A NAS with network or a thunderbolt connection would be optimal in regard to space. That's my main problem right now; I need a redundant 4 TB but what I want would cost around $2000. Yeah, the "accountant" ain't going for that right now..
