[b][Updated at 12:47 p.m. ET] [/b]President Barack Obama has been informed of the school shooting in Connecticut and will receive regular updates throughout the day, the White House said on Friday.
[b][Updated at 12:27 p.m. ET][/b] The mom who spoke to CNN's Meredith Artley said she heard "at least 100 rounds" being fired.
The shooting began about 9:35 a.m., the parent said. There was a "pop pop pop" in the hall outside the room. Three people went out of the room into the hall where the sounds had come from. "Only one person came back," we were told.
The witness told Artley that she then called 911. She said she never saw the shooter but she later was escorted outside the room past two bodies lying in blood.

Trying to piece this together here. The parent killed at home is likely his father. He then went to the school and killed his mom and I'm guessing the kids killed were from her class. Then killed some other authority figures at the school before killing himself?

I wonder if they'll figure out the motive. Was he just pissed off at his parents? Did he just want to be famous? Is it some sort of religious doomsday thing?

What the hell would be the reason for killing the kids?

Why would we have a gun discussion on this? He could have just as easily killed all those kids with a baseball bat or knife or his bare hands.

disagree. If he didn't have a gun, that many people don't die. He could have tried, but I doubt he's able to pull it off.

Maybe 2 or 3 die (and I'm not remotely saying that's ok), but 27 don't.

The type of weapon used escalated the death count. That much is obvious.

I'm told a maniac In china did this very thing today to an elementary school class, 20+ stabbed nobody dead. I'll see if I can find a link, on my cell.

Saddening regardless. I don't think it makes the situation any less tragic, but its obviously easier to defend yourself from a knife than a gun.

looks like it was 1 elderly woman and 22 children injured.




I don't want to turn this into a gun control thread and take away from those who lost their lives today, but it simply can't be denied that the type of weapon used today escalated the death count.

Why is it every time some madman kills scores of people with military weaponry is it "out of bounds" to talk about the weapons used in the crime? That is what is bullshit to me.. I love shooting guns.. Grew up in a gun culture family. All the male members of my family hunt, and most were in the military. We all own guns.. But I don't see why a discussion on gun control is wrong when it's obvious to anyone with half a brain that you can't do this kind of damage without one.
