Why is it every time some madman kills scores of people with military weaponry is it "out of bounds" to talk about the weapons used in the crime? That is what is bullshit to me.. I love shooting guns.. Grew up in a gun culture family. All the male members of my family hunt, and most were in the military. We all own guns.. But I don't see why a discussion on gun control is wrong when it's obvious to anyone with half a brain that you can't do this kind of damage without one.
But what short of banning guns (which isn't going to happen) can be done? I don't know how you stop someone that is mentally ill that already owns or has access to guns from using them in this manner if they "snap" like this douchebag apparently did.
I am sure that the screening process can be made more rigorous, but let's be honest: criminals and people that desperately want to acquire a gun legally or otherwise will do so no matter how inconvenient the government makes it for normal (99% of them) gun owners to purchase them.

And what constitutes "military weaponry" in your eyes? Apparently the Democrats don't know either as they continue to push for an "assault weapons ban", when they aren't even really able to define what an "assault weapon" even is, other than that it looks scary so it must be bad.

I'm sure all this could be figured out if people would actually be willing to have a rational conversation about it.. Instead you get people doing what they are doing in this thread (and after every incident like this).. They draw a line in the sand, stick their fingers in their ears and say "not gonna talk about it:".

Surely there is some middle ground between a gun "ban" and me being able to walk into a pawn shop literally a mile from my house and choose from a plethora weapons designed to kill people on a modern battlefield complete with a bullet proof vest, night vision goggles and a sniper scope.

And I don't think we should be trying to take "assault" guns from anybody.. Just stop selling new ones to people.. Will you eliminate gun crime? Of course not.. But that argument is dumb. Theft will always exist as well, but I don't see anyone suggesting we shouldn't find ways to minimize it's occurrence.

If having gun control laws in place doesn't help curb these kinds of things. Why does it happen so much here, and so little in places with what appear to be effective gun control policies?\

Just look at the company we are in.. 2nd and 3rd world countries.

Why is it when people die in other tragedies it's consdered noble and right to go on a crusade to "fix it so this doesn't happen again".. But when it's gun violence it's not proper to talk about trying to prevent these things?

I don't think it's ok. My thoughts on gun control don't seem far off from yours. My not trying to bring gun control in to this thread didn't have anything to do with my thoughts on gun control.

Again though, my question is "how do you fix this?". There are more firearms in this country than there are people. With that in mind you'd think occurences like this would be more common. The fact of the matter is that they aren't that common. They are more widely reported than ever before though.

I view this as a multi-faceted issue. The media cycle doesn't help. Many of these idiots want to be "remembered for something" because they are total losers. The media over-reports on these nutjobs and gives them a name, a face, a motive and a story. That has to stop. It's known that the VA Tech shooter had an unnatural interest in the Columbine incident. De-sensitization to violence through movies, video games and such is an issue, especially amongst parents that expose their children to it at far too young of an age. As we continue to move forward with technology, we as a people and a nation are far less likely to have actual human communication without the intervention of computers, smartphones, Facebook, etc...which IMO alienates us from each other even further.

It used to be that when you moved into a new neighborhood, Mrs Smith from across the street would welcome you to the neighborhood with an apple pie. Now people just eye you suspiciously (I am speaking specifically to the suburbs of larger cities...small towns aren't as prone to this in my experience).

Undiagnosed or otherwise ignored mental illness is also clearly a problem. A person that would walk into an elementary school and kill innocent children is completely dysfunctional as a person.

So how to keep guns, which we will ALWAYS have, out of the hands of people like this? Your answer is as good as mine. Handgun bans won't work, outright gun bans will never get passed as law....so what do we do? Arm the principals of every school? Have an armed security guard at schools?

I just don't know but I can guarantee you that banning weapons won't resolve anything.

How do you explain the far less frequency of these crimes per capita in countries with stricter gun policies?

Because, there will always be the "yer gun take our guuns" crowd - and if not, there is a group that will perpetuate this ridiculous notion to make sure the others do. (Kinda like when Obama was re-elected, the 'kiss-yer-guns-goodbye' posts were in full force).

And if you mention any sort of law that was the word "firearm" or "gun" in it, people get all riled up. Hey, I'm a gun owner, and I enjoy shooting the shit out of paper targets. I like the idea of having the means necessary to have a firearm to defend my family and property. Just because of this "right", doesn't mean anyone with a pulse should be able to buy or own a "guun" because it's they "rayt". There are too many stupid motherfuckers who are legally allowed to access / 'right' to purchase lethal weapons. Clearly.

Would you give up your right to own a gun at home. If it meant this never happened ever again?
No, because it's an entirely implausible scenario. How will it "never happen again"? It's not possible. I feel the need to mention that there are more owned firearms in this country than there are people. Even if a ban went into effect tomorrow, it's affect would be nil. People with nefarious purposes can obtain a gun easily whether they are legal or not. It sounds like a cliche, but it's true: if guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns. Jesus Christ people, do you not recall the horrorific attacks in Norway in 2011? This is a country with strict gun control and lazy-boy prisons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Norway_attacks

Killed 77 people! In a nation with strict gun control! Oh noes!

You people that think banning guns will solve some sort of problem are the delusional ones. Our population continues to grow. There are going to be bad seeds amongst us forever. Tragedies are going to happen no matter our vigilance. Removing firearms from people that are responsible with them (which again, is the VAST majority) is not an answer.

are you going to completely round up all the guns? No, but there are steps that can be taken to put a massive dent.

1) You can either discontinue the sale of guns or at the very least put severe restrictions.

2) put restrictions on all non-hunting guns encountered outside of the home. You can make it legal to only be allowed to possess guns in your home for protection, and only outside the home to and from hunting grounds. Anyone caught with a gun not in those circumstances, the gun is confiscated and the person is arrested.

3) There can also be limits as far as ammunition goes.

It's time this country gets past a 236 year old amendment that was created under far different circumstances than the country exists in today.

I don't know why you keep substituting "reducing" with "eliminating". No one has suggested you can eliminate this (except Weston which was obviously entirely hypothetical). You mentioned 1 event in Norway.. Would you mind bringing up the numbers for gun deaths per capita in Norway?

Nevermind, I'll do it for you.

yes seriously. You think he's able to kill 9 adults with just a knife? You don't think they would have been able to stop him before that, before he got 18 kids as well?

The type of weapon used escalated the death count. That much is obvious.

No I mean really, we have to turn this into another gun debate?

A Christmas Prayer

Dear Jesus,
It's a good thing you were born at night. This world sure seems dark. I have a good eye for silver linings. But they seem dimmer lately.
These killings, Lord. These children, Lord. Innocence violated. Raw evil demonstrated.
The whole world seems on edge. Trigger-happy. Ticked off. We hear threats of chemical weapons and nuclear bombs. Are we one button-push away from annihilation?
Your world seems a bit darker this Christmas. But you were born in the dark, right? You came at night. The shepherds were nightshift workers. The Wise Men followed a star. Your first cries were heard in the shadows. To see your face, Mary and Joseph needed a candle flame. It was dark. Dark with Herod's jealousy. Dark with Roman oppression. Dark with poverty. Dark with violence.
Herod went on a rampage, killing babies. Joseph took you and your mom into Egypt. You were an immigrant before you were a Nazarene.
Oh, Lord Jesus, you entered the dark world of your day. Won't you enter ours? We are weary of bloodshed. We, like the wise men, are looking for a star. We, like the shepherds, are kneeling at a manger.
This Christmas, we ask you, heal us, help us, be born anew in us.
Hopefully,
Your Children

You dont need a gun. You flat out don't need one. You want one. You don't need one. You want one. There are tons of countries where you have a gun and you go to prison. Shit like this doesn't happen.

Jesus is a made up story. What happened today was real. Little kids died because we decided to be a country of cowboys that are so insecure and paranoid that we need guns to protect us more than actual safety, that allows gun lobbyists to restrict common sense and that has decided that mental health is nowhere near as important as physical health.
