|Bunghole|
From Wikipedia: Farney Freel gained some notoriety in August of 2006 when The Dayton Daily News reported that Freel talks to an imaginary voice in his head named Farney.[sup][3][/sup] Said Freel: "He's a little guy who lives in my head who talks to me and I talk to him. That little midget in my head said, 'That was a great catch, Ryan,' I said, 'Hey, Farney, I don't know if that was you who really caught that ball, but that was pretty good if it was.' Everybody thinks I talk to myself, so I tell 'em I'm talking to Farney."[sup][4][/sup] Freel later said that Farney's name arose from a conversation with Reds trainer Mark Mann: "He actually made a comment like, 'How are the voices in your head?' We'd play around and finally this year he said, 'What's the guy's name?' I said, 'Let's call him Farney.' So now everybody's like, 'Run, Farney, run' or 'Let Farney hit today. You're not hitting very well.'"[sup][5][/sup] [sup] [/sup]

mongo
Poor bastard. Loved how he played. What makes a guy with so much fight in him feel there's nothing left worth fighting for?

JC
Ryan may not have had 5 star tools, but the guy had 5 star heart. One of my favorite Reds. Wish he could have fought off his demons. Rest In Peace, Ryan.

|Lucid|
I know it may be unrelated, because no one knows for sure about these things.. But wasn't it concussions that finally put an end to his career?

But wasn't it concussions that finally put an end to his career?
I think part of that was his reckless style of play. I remember reading something in an article where Griffey was quoted as saying something along the lines of needing a megaphone to get him to back off chasing balls that were the responsibility of the center fielder. I know that Ryan collided with other outfielders at least a few times for that very reason. This makes me really sad. Surely he had everything to live for. |Elflocko|
From an article by Hal McCoy:
His hell-bent-for-destruction style also lead to a long series on concussions, which he kept quiet as much as possible. After he dove for a ball in center field and cracked his head against the wall and suffered a concussion his father called me about his son’s concussion history and said, “He has had nine or ten concussions, going back to his high school days.” WHEN I WROTE the story, Freel was incensed at his estranged father for telling me and at me for writing it, “Because you might be cutting my career short and baseball is all I have. And my father has never been part of my life and it isn’t his business.”
Looks like concussions definitely played a factor... :/
