Texans sign Shane Lechler for 3 years for 5.5 mil total. That Huber deal really looks bad now.

that's because you look at Lechler the reputation and not Lechler the 2012 punter.  He's still a great punter, but he's also 36 and at a point where his play is going to decline, not continue to improve.

If you want to look at just 2012, Huber had more punts downed inside the 20, a better inside the 20 %, less touchbacks, a slighly lower average, but a significantly higher net.

When you compare the 2012 stats, Huber had the better season.  Guy entering his prime coming off the better season deserves the better contract than the guy at the end of his career coming off a lesser year.

If vets got contracts based on just their reputation, Urlacher would be a Bear right now. Instead, they offered him a contract based on his future worth, not what he's done prior.

Not to mention, Lechler is actually making more in base salary over the next two years than Huber.  Only thing that really makes Huber's deal bigger by yearly average is a slightly bigger signing bonus and the $1.65M roster bonus they gave him.

Doesn't matter. I'm taking a wait and see approach and not getting all worked up about something for no reason.

On the other hand, some people are attacking Andre Smith, making personal attacks, assigning ulterior motives, name-calling and spewing all sorts of anger/hatred towards him for no justifiable reason.

Like you did with Bruce Gradkowski?

And that's what happens on message boards....if it bothers you so much, there are options available to you so that you are not so bothered.

What are you talking about? All I said about him is he isnt very good. I never cared at all about Gradkowski. I was glad when he left.

Ginn Jr. now a Packer.
One more off the possibility list.

Looks like the strategy is pretty much keep our own and not
dumpster dive when there isn't a lot there for the Matt Joneses of
the NFL.

Not bad.  Now just nail a killer draft.

Packers?

He signed a few days ago with Carolina.

If you go back far enough in some of these threads, it was discussed.

And if you go back a few posts you will see 1181 caught and corrected me and I thanked him for the catch and correction.

And no, I do not read every thread and post on here.  Besides having some sort of life, I am not interested in some of the

topics and many quickly degenerate into who posts last flame wars.  Not only childish, but boring.

This is silly. Huber had a good year in 2012, the best of his career but there's no particular reason to expect continued improvement, in fact there's better odds that a career season won't be repeated. Punting is a pretty straightforward business, where good punters can play to 40 or even later. That's also true of placekickers and longsnappers by the way. It's because they are only on the field a few plays a game and don't take many hits.

Pointing out that Lechler is far more consistent than Huber is somehow evidence of decline on Lechler's part. There's no way that Huber is worth 50% more than Lechler. Huber signed before free agency opened and without testing the market because he knew it was more than anyone else would pay him. That's pretty much the definition of overpaying.

Shane Lechler is no doubt a better punter than Huber now and I believe he will be better 3 years from now as well as costs less.  Its not that complicated.  I hate punter stats because like I said earlier I saw a ton of Huber punts that traveled 25-35 yards in the air and rolled for another 10-15 last year.  I think he was a little lucky last year that really helped his average.  I think his a mid tier punter at best and were paying him as if he is upper tier.  Lechler would be a big upgrade.

First you are being a tard. Second you are actually wrong.

Huber had the better season, his second contract pays him an average of 2.8.

Lechler a better punter career wise but not as good based on last year just finished a contract at 4 mil a year and now has a deal paying 1.8 putting him back in his home state.

Different stages in their career is huge in the difference in pay today.

As for continued improvement we are paying Huber his market rate and he gets 7.8 the first 3 years which is 2.6. Then after 3 years he would never count more than million in dead money so the bengals will have 2 years at no risk probably paying well below market.

Basically bengals are paying 1.3m more in the first 3 years to get those back 2 years with virtually no risk to cap or outrageous salary making him overpaid.

again, you're only focused on the past.  All that matters is what they're worth in the future.

They paid Huber a contract reflective of what they think the market for good punters will be in the FUTURE.  Not what its been in the past.

So the latest from Hobson indicates that the Bengals plan is to keep Andre Smith and Terence Newman. Plus sign low priced guys at LB, S and maybe QB.

Not surprising or anything, but worth mentioning.

It will be interesting to see what caliber of player they are going to be able to bring in at LB and S. Even though they don't plan on spending much, there are still some starting caliber guys out there who could be had for cheap. Especially at LB.

While teams pay for future production, they also pay based on what the alternatives cost or at least should. The alternatives to Huber are much less expensive and arguably much better. You seem to give Huber credit for all the punts downed after the roll but the Bengals have a top coverage unit. There's no reason to think the gunners would be worse covering anyone else's punts. It's not as if Huber is kicking the ball out of bounds in the coffin corner, he had a lot of punts that rolled inside the 20 and were downed. Good for him but it's not as if nobody else in the NFL can do that and expecting him to repeat his career year is the same mistake they made with Geathers before his last contract.

There really isn't much argument that his production is worth a lot more than Lechler. It's simply homerism to ignore obvious facts.

The coverage units would indeed have a hard time covering punts if the new guy couldn't kick it as accurately or high as Huber.  Seeing one of our guys get down and fair catch it at the two is pretty impressive.

Sometimes you might as well just pay the guy you have instead of go hunting for someone that might not work out.  It isn't like the difference in the salaries is meaningful in any cap sense...its chump change, and it has the added advantage of showing the fellows working on those bargain rookie deal that there might be one for them if they play well.

And Geathers's second contract was hardly a mistake.  The fellow played DE pretty well for years and was hardly ever out.  And now he's a team leader at a reasonable salary instead of a malcontent counting the days before he can get out of town,

Welcome back Huber, welcome back Geathers.

Geathers has been the most grossly overpaid player on our roster for years.  Yeah its not Kolb or Sanchez bad... but he has still been grossly overpaid.  His newest contact isnt as bad but he is still overpaid if you ask me.

He's hardly been as bad as the cycle of FA WRs who are paid millions for a year and contribute little.  Or Odom, although that wasn't his fault.

The board goes on and on about how cheap Mike Brown is, and then come back with Scrooge McDuck comments like this.  It's funny,

I don't have any issues with Huber's play. He's a solid pro. My issue is that he's considerably overpaid and at some point we'll regret not having more cap space when we have to give contract extensions to the players who actually make a lot more of a difference. I have a similar complaint about Geathers who is mediocre and overpaid and Maualuga who is just bad and overpaid. If it makes you feel better we didn't overpay Harris and got Nugent on a bargain deal.

His contract is structured in a manner that if doesnt live up to the cap hit in later years he represents very little dead money.
