What?!?! No Tate signing thread?

Recommended Posts

I'd be fine with Tate if he could do 3 things:

  1. Don't return a kickoff that is ~8 yards deep in the end zone
  2. Don't catch punts inside the 10 yard line
  3. Don't fumble any kickoffs/punts

I don't even care about extra yardage or TDs, those would all be gravy with me.  Do those 3 things and I'd be happy.

It's funny you mention that because we had a previous guy in Quan Cosby who as a punt returner was smart, decisive and showed good hands. But he typically didn't get a lot of yards on average.

I'm too lazy to look, but I believe Tate is better statistically and he really doesn't fumble much, but as we know he's not always real smart with his decisions.

It'd be interesting to compare them, and also look at non-KO drive start on change of possession, etc. I think Simmons is the best coach they have, and I'm guessing that he was OK with Tate coming back. Tate's pretty much the Rey-esque lightning rod on STs.

I don't mind #1 as much as others seem to.

In fact, I see those types of returns all the time when I watch other teams play and I've noted how often it results in a nice return.

Granted, when the return fails it's an easy thing to 2nd guess, but it seems like most returners have a green light to go, with some discretion, even when the ball is kicked deep.

So I"m guessing whoever replaces Tate, should he be kicked to the curb, would continue the habit.

For example, you know Ginn would have. Cribbs too.

I've read the taking deep kickoffs thing is common around the league because with the new rule many coverage teams will just assume the guy is going to kneel it and let up in their coverage. That's why you see many of the, end up as nice returns.

With the element of suprise angle set aside for a moment...

Due to the recent rule changes kickoffs reach deep into the endzone so often that a failure to give a returner a green light on those types of plays would all but eliminate big returns.

Granted, mistakes happen and any return that falls short of the 20 will be viewed by most as a mistake. But unless the returner is being dropped at the 10 with regularity the mistakes are a small price to pay for the opportunity to break a long return.

Thing that drives me nuts about Tate is his decision making, I cant count the number of times he has taken a route that led to him getting taclked when there was something else wide open that could have sprung him for more yards.

I think lanes would be hard to tell. Even if you had a camera behind the guy, it's still not at his eye level or seeing things at the same depth. I don't like Tate but I thought he had some scent returns this year and his vision seemed fine. I did really dislike his decision making on what punts to return, when to catch it/fair catch it, and what ones to let bounce into the end zone. That's old news though.

Draft and release...I can't watch any more return fumbles or ten yard deep in the end zone catch and returns.  Even my son asked if they were bringing back "that guy who sucked".  He says"y'know that guy that fumbled all the time?".

I understand he isnt seeing the field from the top down, but even so it makes me question his vision when some of the lanes are obvious.

I think the lanes are a lot less obvious from field view than from above field view.  I've never had a big problems with his kick returns, but his PR's do leave some bad memories.

What about punts that would land at the 2?  I think that is the REAL issue here.

Sure, I think....if you're talking about not returning a punt that would fall within the 10...rather than letting it simply bounce into the endzone for a touchback. That's a mistake Tate makes far too often. But a punt that lands at the 2 and stays there? That's just a bad bounce or a great play by the other guys.

My earlier remarks were about kickoff returns that start very deep, and again...I've got no problem with 'em. I think it's what you have to do to give yourself more opportunities to make game changing plays. Plus, there's far more room for error on a KO return. Gunners are farther away when catching the ball, and even a bad KO retrun will likely result in the ball far enough from your own goal for the offense to operate normally.
