*UPDATE* Bengals and James Harrison reach agreement on a deal

Fixed it for ya!

The defense played well in the last 3 games of the season, which were all essentially playoff games as one loss would've put us out. Dalton struggled mightly managing one TD vs. the Raven's backups.. but yet all of you idoit fans want to point the finger at Rey, do you guys actually watch the games???

Yeah, I watch the games.  Dalton wasn't good down the stretch (already mentioned it in this thread by the way) and Rey sucked at MLB.  Leon Hall played incredible down the stretch as did Newman.  Nelson came up big as well as did Burfect and the d liine.

That's not true, the same guys who are available now have been available since Rey signed. Name 1 FA LB who signed a deal this offseason that is just hands down better than Rey.

I don't put any stock in Walterfootball's rankings, so let's ignore where he has Rey for the time being.  However, in answer to your question/challenge, let's look at who else was out there:

  1. ravensb_logo.gif Dannell Ellerbe, ILB, Ravens. Age: 27. star.gifstar.gifstar.gif
    Signed with Dolphins

Dannell Ellerbe was the top inside linebacker on the roster this past season - even when Ray Lewis was healthy. He had a strong second half, emerging after Lewis went down.

  2. packersb_logo.gif Brad Jones, ILB, Packers. Age: 27. star.gifstar.gifstar.gif
    Re-signed with Packers

Desmond Bishop's season-ending injury was initially thought to be a big deal, but it turned out to be very minor because Brad Jones stepped in and did a great job. Jones played all three downs highly effectively. He deserves a big contract.

  3. dolphinsb_logo.gif Karlos Dansby, ILB, Dolphins. Age: 31. star.gifstar.gifstar.gif
The Dolphins went younger when they made a very minor upgrade by replacing Karlos Dansby with Dannell Ellerbe. Dansby is a very strong run defender who can still play all three downs. Unfortunately, he'll turn 32 in November.

  4. raidersb_logo.gif Rolando McClain, ILB, Raiders. Age: 24. star.gifstar.gifhalfstar.gif
    Signed with Ravens

The positive for Rolando McClain: He's a strong run defender who will be just 24 in July. The negative? He was used on just two downs in 2012 because he can't cover. He also has major work-ethic issues, though these could be fixed if he's brought into a strong locker room.

  5. bearsb_logo.gif Brian Urlacher, ILB, Bears. Age: 35. star.gifstar.gifhalfstar.gif
Based on the way he played last year, Brian Urlacher probably deserves 1.5 stars. He was terrible. However, he was hurt throughout, so maybe he can recover and be at least an OK starter again.

  6. 49ersb_logo.gif Larry Grant, ILB, 49ers. Age: 28. star.gifstar.gif
Larry Grant played well in relief of an injured Patrick Willis a year ago, but didn't see the field much in 2012.

  7. jetsb_logo.gif Bart Scott, ILB, Jets. Age: 33. star.gifstar.gif
Bart Scott is no longer a three-down linebacker, but he's still effective in terms of stopping the run.

  8. chargersb_logo.gif Takeo Spikes, ILB, Chargers. Age: 36. star.gifstar.gif
Takeo Spikes played well for the first few months of the season in 2012, but he struggled mightily down the stretch. There's a chance he could be done. At best, he's a solid, two-down veteran.

  9. giantsb_logo.gif Chase Blackburn, ILB, Giants. Age: 30. star.gifstar.gif
    Signed with Panthers (2 years)

Chase Blackburn was OK at times last year, but killed his team in some games. He needs to be upgraded.

  10. cowboysb_logo.gif Dan Connor, ILB, Cowboys. Age: 28. star.gifstar.gif
    Signed with Giants

Dan Connor has been a disappointment in his pro career thus far, but he's a very good reserve linebacker and an OK spot starter in the middle of a 3-4 defense.

  11. texansb_logo.gif Bradie James, ILB, Texans. Age: 32. star.gifstar.gif
Wade Phillips probably wanted Bradie James to play fewer snaps during the year, but Brian Cushing's injury forced his hand. James did a solid job in run support, but wasn't very good in coverage.

  12. steelersb_logo.gif Larry Foote, ILB, Steelers. Age: 33. star.gifstar.gif
    Re-signed with Steelers

Larry Foote is an asset because he's a smart leader on the field, but his skills have eroded. He was ranked near the top among linebackers in terms of missed tackles and touchdowns allowed. He said he's considering retirement.

  13. Tim Dobbins, ILB, Texans. Age: 30. star.gifhalfstar.gif -- Re-signed with Texans
  14. Rey Maualuga, ILB, Bengals. Age: 26. star.gifhalfstar.gif -- Re-signed with Bengals (2 years, $6.5 million)
  15. Jasper Brinkley, ILB, Vikings. Age: 28. star.gifhalfstar.gif -- Signed with Cardinals (2 years)
  16. Keith Brooking, ILB, Broncos. Age: 37. star.gifhalfstar.gif
  17. Paris Lenon, ILB, Cardinals. Age: 35. star.gifhalfstar.gif
  18. Demorrio Williams, ILB, Chargers. Age: 33. star.gifhalfstar.gif
  19. Moise Fokou, ILB, Colts. Age: 28. star.gifhalfstar.gif -- Signed with Titans
  20. Brandon Siler, ILB, Chiefs. Age: 27. star.gifhalfstar.gif
  21. Barrett Ruud, ILB, Texans. Age: 30. star.gifhalfstar.gif
  22. Stewart Bradley, ILB, Cardinals. Age: 29. star.gifhalfstar.gif -- Signed with Broncos (1 year)

Interesting, no?  So your first and most obvious takeaway from this (should be) that the overall quality of ILB talent available in FA has not been very good.

And none of this is counting OLB's who could play middle or SAM or even WLB (Philliip Wheeler would be an obvious answer to your question).

Keep in mind Rey started at MLB for top 10 defense two years in a row, so he was obviously doing something right.  Rey is here because the coaches wanted him to be here...simple as that.

Now let's take a little deeper look and finally debunk this whole Rey was on a top 10 Defense therefore he was good crap (team D rankings in parenthesis).

So was Daniel Ellerbe, who got away from the Ravens (#8).

Brad Jones, Packers (#11)

Larry Grant, SF, (#6)

Bradie James, Houston (#3)

Tim Dobbins, Houston (#3)

Jasper Brinkley, Vikings (#2)

Keith Brooking, Broncos, (#12)

Moise Foku, Colts, (#10)

Barret Ruud, Texans (#3)

From that list, only one guy resigned with his team.  But if they were all on top 10 defenses why on earth wouldn't their teams want to resign them?!

Your collective logic is back-assward. Literally.

And now you can all shut up.

Here are the facts:

4. Arizona flew Rey during the first weeks of FA, meaning he was a priority to another NFL franchise, which means he can't be the worst MLB in the NFL. This also means that there are two NFL coaching staffs who wanted Rey on their teams, to be the MLB of their defenses..obviously they are stupid and know nothing about football...well atleast not more than you because you read a PFF.com article somewhere and watched some games on TV realized that it was Rey's fault the offense only scored 1 TD in the last 3 games of the season while defense held opposing teams to under 20 pts in the last 8 games of the year...

Obviously, you don't know that Arizona plays a 3-4 and thus, don't have a MLB.  Do you really think if they switched, having Rey as their MLB would be a great idea?

By the way, we have had MANY FAs in to talk.  Did we want all of them?  Nope.

LOL, an 80 year old Takeo Spikes is rated higher than Rey.

Is someone in here arguing that Rey is "Good"?

I see a lot of people saying he is average, and signed a contract that reflects that, and some others saying he is utter garbage and completely sucks at football.. One position seems reasonable and one seems overly dramatic.

1. Yeah ooook

2. I never said they didnt plan on keeping him for the duration for the contract, I said he was signed to a stop-gap contract that give them basicly 2 years to replace him.

3. Yeah let's go with that. (snickers)

4. I never said he was the worst MLB in the NFL, I said he isnt that good. AZ flew him in and he didnt sign, which indicates that they offered him less in terms of money or years or just as likely didnt want him enough to let him get out of the building. As far as PFF, you're going to have to try harder, I said that site sucked when they listed Evan Mathis as one of the best guards in the NFL while he was here.

He got you with the dead money.  It  killed your point.

So your point is after his 6th year in the league, the team might want to replace him.  Hilarious.

He signed a reasonable contract for a good SAM linebacker that can play MLB as backup.  Bookmark this post and come back to me in 4 months.

Apparently you're late to the party. Sharm has been arguing that Rey is "Good" because he plays on a top 10 Defense.

I think he improved as the season went on at MLB.  If the he ends up back in the middle I would imagine it's because of that, and that perhaps he wasn't quite as bad as some people want to make him out to be.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't be happy to see that position improved.. I just don't know how much of an issue it is when our offense struggles to score 20 points and the defense is likely set to have another top 10 season.

Rey is good, he's not exceptional. Some people, not necessarily you, Jamie, believe that every player on this team should be exceptional, or be paid veteran minimum. I remember a guy named Justin.

Yeah, I keep thinking about all those posts too.  It's always somebody's day in the barrel.

I dont think he is good at all, I think he is the prototypical top gap player that is average enough to be kept while they look for a long term solution.

And Justin is good NOW  for a few reasons one of the biggest being that he has finally dedicated himself to studying tape something by his own admission that he didnt do here.

So was your point.   But it does suggest that he is more that what you are willing to admit.

No he's not or he would have been signed to a longer deal than 2 years.
