Not that I wouldn't want to travel to Pakistan but seriously ?  How much would you or anyone else for that matter want to travel to a country that has a travel warning in place on it ?  I wouldn't.

five Ukrainians, three Chinese and one Russian

Travel Warnings are issued when long-term, protracted conditions that make a country dangerous or unstable lead the State Department to recommend that Americans avoid or consider the risk of travel to that country. A Travel Warning is also issued when the U.S. Government's ability to assist American citizens is constrained due to the closure of an embassy or consulate or because of a drawdown of its staff. The countries listed below meet those criteria.

Surprised to see Israel and Mexico on that list.

Even back in the 80's and early 90's when I went to Israel it was dangerous. While in Haifa there was a suicide bombing and a building blown up.  The security in other places (West Wall, etc...) was ridiculously overbearing.  Before family went to Mexico they were briefed on where to go and where not to go.    Numerous kidnappings and beheading in the street happening at the timeframe.   .

what's wrong with Eritrea

A quick check will tell you what's wrong with Eritrea.  Besides the 30 year war with Ethiopia which resulted in an uneasy truce there is also a Very High rate of infectious diseases.  They have been at war with Yemen and others since also.  Other than THAT it seems to be an interesting country which has never been on my schedule.

The US State Department's Travel Warning List is my go-to guide for travel planning.  Less Americans almost always = better travel experience.

Let's see...I'd say the Philippines look ripe for a visit!

And do yourselves a favor and go to Colombia before they take it off the list.

(I'm also surprised Chicago isn't on there, as it's easily more unsafe than 90% of those places).

Chicago itself in the main part of the city is not bad but drift to the southern outskirts it turns day into night.  Tends to drive figures in the opposite direction from the rest of the city.  Night time could be tricky if you don't know your way around.

NUMBER OF HOMICIDES IN CHICAGO IN 2011  441

NUMBER OF HOMICIDES IN CHICAGO IN 2012  535

NUMBER OF HOMICIDES IN CHICAGO AS OF June 23, 2013  186

NUMBER OF PEOPLE SHOT IN CHICAGO IN 2011  2,217

NUMBER OF PEOPLE SHOT IN CHICAGO AS IN 2012  2,670

Mexico has been averaging almost 9000 deaths each year since 2006 and that's only related to drug related deaths.  or... If one is to believe the Mexican census then that figure might be as high as 12000 per year.

paraphrased

47,515 people had been killed in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderón began a military assault on criminal cartels in late 2006.

By comparison, in the United States (in 2010) there was 12,996 murders (drug, etc... all lumped into one total).  Britain had (in 2010) 638 murders (equivalent to 3,095 US murders)

http://www.juancole.com/2012/07/58-murders-a-year-by-firearms-in-britain-8775-in-us.html

Note:  US drug related deaths is approximately 1120 per year (between 2006-2010)  http://narcosphere.narconews.com/notebook/bill-conroy/2012/03/drug-war-related-homicides-us-average-least-1100-year

Note:  Mexico total murder rate is 24 per 100,000 people or a little over 27,000 per year (population is over 113 million).

Note:  For total murders in every country go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate  you'll also see all the countries that are listed in the travel warnings on there.

Last Note:  FWIW, the Americas maintain 8 of the top 10 countries with the highest murder rate in the entire world.  However, the US is not ranked in the top 10, Libya, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, etc... have less murder rate than the US.  In other words, the travel warning are not always concerned with the murder rate but also things like disease and or kidnappings, etc...

No kidding.

And while not on the list, if you want to avoid Americans while traveling go to Japan.  An added bonus is that I felt safer there than any other country to which I've traveled...
