Computer Gurus....Need Help!

Recommended Posts

My PC is having a problem. When I got up this morning the desktop was acting weird, freezing and trying to open applications and it was slow and wonky. So I attempted to restart the computer from the Start menu (Windows 7) and it hung up there. So then I tried to hard reboot it from the power button and it didn't do anything.

So then I had no option but to hard reboot it by cutting power and pulling the plug. So I do this, and then it looks like its starting to reboot, then I get this message on a black screen: "Drive read error. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart". So I do that, and I keep getting the same message. I've tried several times now over the course of several hours and I am getting the same thing. I'm guessing my hard drive is cheesed, but is there anything else I can try before I jump to that conclusion?

Ayuda mi!

I hope you have backups of all of your files as it sounds like that drive is toast.

In the interim, unplug it, open the case, find the hard drive.  You should have 2 connections, one SATA, one power (if I remember correctly from when you hooked it up).  Pull both cables and reseat them on the hard drive.  Then, trace back the cable that goes to the motherboard, and unplug that and reseat it in the same slot.  This will at least make sure that it's not because one of the cables is loose.  Once you've done that, try starting it again.  I'm not optimistic...

You know...that should have been the first thing I checked, especially since I run this machine with the case cover off and a fan blowing on it to keep it cool when I tax it really hard with games. So....I was prepared to put a new hard drive in, and as I checked the cables, I noticed that the set closest to me was slightly off center. So I pushed it in all the way (and I'm talking it barely moved at all) and viola...problem solved. Crazy.

Get dropbox or something to back up your files.  All of my local files get saved on drop box just in case my computer gets teh AIDS

I have a Seagate external for that, although I'm not as religious about being current on backing up as I should be. The only thing I stand to lose on the machine that's important to me are pictures of my kids. The porn is replaceable.
