A Maryland woman says she felt racially profiled when extra police officers were on hand for the showing of "Lee Daniels' The Butler" at a downtown Silver Spring movie theater.

Tiffany Flowers tweeted about her outrage, which is now gaining international attention.

Flowers tells News4 she saw the movie Saturday night at Regal's Majestic Theater, where three police officers were verifying tickets and escorting moviegoers in and out of the theater.

She says she felt profiled by the added security because the crowd was predominantly African-American.

"A lot of people feel that an overwhelmingly African-American audience getting three police officers to guard and manage our entrance and exit from the theater is very, very suspicious," she said. "So I'm hoping that they come up with an answer that we can all deal with...."

Regal Cinemas released a statement on the matter that reads, "Regal Entertainment Group routinely employs security personnel to ensure the safety of all our guests and staff. When a theater experiences sold-out showings of any feature, security will assist with crowd control and guest assistance throughout the facility, including auditoriums."

Flowers said she's never seen officers at the theater before. She's received a lot of support for her stance via social media, of which she said, "I think it's great. I think that Regal should be on high alert because it's really about how this makes them look and how they're being portrayed in the community."

First, I don't buy the fact she hasn't seen officers there before.  I know the area, there are a lot of shops around the theater, and kids would hang out there on weekends, so by default, officers should be there.

Second, there are movies that someone from the theater will be checking ticket stubs at the entrance of the theater to ensure people don't sneak in.  Usually, it is a movie that is "R" and meant for teens which in turn, they would buy a different movie and sneak into the "R" one. This movie is PG-13 though.

There were P\police officers in the theater watching the people who were watching the movie.  Talk about a security overload.  I would not go to see a movie if I felt there was that much need for security at the theater, I would feel unsafe as a result.  I can understand a few people and maybe even a few police but this situation is a wee bit overboard.

People just want to find things to be outraged about. Just live your life. How was the movie? Did you enjoy your evening? How did the police presence hurt your movie experience?

When this was posted on FB (all the DC news outlets picked this up), people were asking the exact same thing, and then going as far as saying they saw cops at multiple movies this summer, regardless what it was.

She wanted attention, and in this case, it went national.  No one forces you to watch a movie, so get over it and play by the rules of the theater.

I have gone to screenings for years in DC, and most of the time, some type of "security" is there, but that is because of piracy.  Those people do not have guns though, and after the first few minutes, they just stand and watch the movie.  It's pathetic and a waste of money from the studio.

Why can't they be good lil niggers and just watch the movie.....amirite?

there are police at every movie theatre here on the weekends. fri-sun, and for most of the late night showing during the week, i took the family to dispicable me 2, there was a cop in the hallway, 3 in the parking lot, and 2 in the lobby... at the whitest movie theater on the planet, and i thought "holy shit what went down here" ..."oh yea i whole bunch of people got fucking murdered 15 miles from here"...whole buncha white males... by a ....white male...

some white males in oklahoma just gunned down another white male cause they were bored and had nothing better to do... i fucking hate white people..we are so annoying... minorities have more fun steriotypes and dont do as much crazy shit..

anyway back to the topic... when i fly with this badass beard i have, i get "randomly selected" for security check 8 out of 10 times.. also the torn cartelidge in my knee shows up in the scanner thing as a weapon EVERYTIME..

there is a whole lot of racial profiling in this world, im not sure cops in and around "the butler" counts... anything with oprah in it isnt going to have any beef, and pretty much everyone knows that... if it were a tyler perry movie however...

this story is boring, this lady is an attention whore, just like the idiot white christian lady from a CNN story yesterday complaining that a "sexy scene" was on the tv while her kid was eating breakfast.. on good morning america commercial break.. it was some romance novel turned tv show commercial.. you know, something for the exact target audience who is watching fucking good morning america.. oh and shock, turns out she is a christian author publisher and blogger.. finally got someone to look at her on her soap box..

good morning america has ZERO kids content on it ever.. i doubt her kid even fucking saw it...like he was locked into good morning 'merica.. he was like 6...

these stories are quite similar.. something that didnt hurt anyone gave someone a soap box to stand on.. both are fools that no one should care what they have to say, because nothing happened to them..

i literally had my old boss tell me, that another old boss told him she only didnt promote me because i was fat, and she didnt feel i came across as professional because of it.. THATS a real gripe, THATS a lawsuit worthy issue.. but i have very little to gain from it, so i told no one(except you strangers, now) and moved on with my life...

You are right that I am white male.

Other than that you aren't right about much very often. I get it, you disagree with me on the Trayvon Martin issue. The real issue is your inability to have a difference of opinion with someone and be an adult about it. Lack of empathy, understanding and higher level thinking come into play as well.

Really hard to comment without knowing the standard operating procedure at the theater. If they do this for most movies, move along. If not, then there may be an issue.

Did the police somehow infringe on their ability to watch the movie? What rights were taken away?

Even if the argument was we brought in more of a police presence to protect you because historically we have had problems in situations where more african americans would attend a movie, the response should be thank you. Thank you for spending more money to ensure my safety. This isn't a situation where they weren't allowing persons to go to the movie because they were african american. This isn't a situation where they said we can only have 15 african americans per theater.

I don't run a movie theatre so I don't know but trying to protect people doesn't seem racist no matter how you try to turn it. If they didn't have added protection and someone got shot what would she have said then.

I don't disagree with this at all.....I think the lady's seeking attention, without knowing full details.  I don't think she has a lawsuit on her hands one bit but if typically cops aren't present at movie theaters, that one specifically then she does have a gripe.  I'm overly sensitive to this sorts of shit.

But yeah, you have a legitimate lawsuit on your hands if you wanted.  That's some straight bullshit!
