If we as fans can objectively look at how a manager influences the game of baseball versus an NFL coach influencing a game of football, then we must realize that hiring a unproven guy isn't as disastrous as it might seem. I don't know about you guys, but hiring some guy languishing within our minor league system or whatever isn't getting my cockles warm. We need a spark, and I think the only way to do that is to hire from without, and not hire a retread. A first year guy with proven player credentials would be a good selection in my book. I'd be on board with O'Neill.

 

The added benefit is you pay a guy like that less and can divert those funds to resigning a guy like Choo. Let's not forget the Reds are on a budget compared to many other teams.

I wouldn't mind giving Ron Oester a shot (the weirdness with his first interview notwithstanding).  He's smart, knows the game, and takes no shit.  I remember members of the 90 championship team talking about how he was the catalyst for that team.

Or I'm full of shit; even odds...
